Prompt: salem was busy taking a much-needed nap in the abandoned barn he lived in, his nest made out of feathers of bird he's hunted and reed from the nearby river. it wasn't the most comfortable, but it was enough for the rogue to keep him warm in these cold nights, especially because he had no fur and got cold easily anway.
he was woken up by a few faint cries from what seemed to be little kittens and of course, he got up to find them. salem might not be too fond of other cats and not social at all, but those were kits and were helpless and innocent and desperately needed his help. the tom perked his ears and lifted his nose up in the air to get on their track. the noises were getting louder, leading him towards the river where he spotted three kittens clinging onto a piece of wood. salem sprinted towards them and without hesitating jumped into the water although the cold was piercing through his hairless skin. the black cat bit into the piece of wood, holding onto it as he carefully but determinded swam back to the shore and grasped each kitten by its neck to get them safe. gosh, he really hated water and swimming, but the kittens were more important so this has been mandatory. salem climbed out of the water himself, freezing cold and water dripping from his skin but he just wanted the kittens safe and warm right now, so he gently shooed them towards his nearby barn.
he shoved the young kittens towards his nest who were immediately getting comfortable and tried to warm each other. "get some rest", salem mumbled and laid down next to them but stayed alert, "i will find your mother, i promise." where did they come from? from the clan nearby? from the twoleg-place? were they abandoned or did they wander out by themselves?
the cat perked his ears and jolted up when he suddenly heard grass rustling. other cats, two of them, and they were close. salem apruptly jumped around and got his claws out as he hissed at the intruders, but a red cat already jumped at him and pinned him to the ground, staring him down with his piercing green eyes, one of which seemed to be almost blind. "what did you do with our kittens?", the stranger hissed and bare his teeth as the other cat that came with him went to the kittens. the hairless cat tried to wiggle out from underneath him, but he wasn't as strong as his opponent. "i didn't do anything! fished them out of the river and gave them shelter. you should be thankful." salem yelped in pain when the sharp claws of the red cat hit his face, but the other stranger spoke up. "firestorm, stop! he's right. the kittens are safe", the she-cat meowed and the cat named firestorm let go of salem, who let out a scoff before he got up and shook himself. clan cats, hu? the tom that attacked him went to the kits to take a look for himself.
the red warrior lowered his head in respect for the rogue when he saw that the kittens were indeed safe and sound. salem wondered how many battles he had fought with the many scars he had, but he didn't want anything to do with the clan business. "ghostclan owes you a lot of gratitude", the red tom said with a clear voice, "if there's anything we can do for you-" - "don't worry about it", salem grumbled and sat down to lick between his claws, acting uninterested but maybe he'll take the offer when he was in trouble. he didn't like to admit it, but he actually felt pride inside him after having impressed the mighty clan cats. "i was happy to help. if you need me-" he paused and got on his paws before he turned to leave, "you know where to find me."
