A young hyena and a male lion could be seen in a large cave, seeming to be looking over the many legends of the Kinori Pride.

The lion points to a painting of a darker lioness, she seems to be sneaking towards something.

"This is one of the many goddesses that we worship, her name is Sygne. She is the goddess of stealth." Ralikai pauses from his explanation to give the young hyena a quick glace. He realised that praying to this goddess might be helpful to the hyena.

"May she protect you on your many missions." He dipped his head, informing the young hyena about the old lion traditions, still new to someone who had come from a different culture and had yet to understand their ways.

"Sign...ie?" Bahru curiously tiled his head and huffed, unsure of all these strange names. They were all so different from what he was used to.

"No, no, it's Sig-nei." Ralikai chuckled as he tried to pronounce the name clearly, finding this rather amusing.

"I think I'll just call her Signie." Bahru gave a defeated sigh. He'll never remember this.

Ralikai frowned at this, appearing upset at the suggestion.

"That would be disrespectful to the gods. How about I call you Signie instead?" Ralikai's voice was somewhat stern, but held a hint of mischief.

"Fine, whatever. I'll learn it properly." Bahru rolled his eyes and mumbled under his breath, realising that he had just given himself a nickname. (245 words)

Explanation: A youngling in his childhood pride couldn't quite manage to pronounce his name. As the little cub was practically his shadow, the nickname was shouted loud and often in a tiny, squeaky voice. As these things are wont to do, the moniker stuck, whether he liked it or not. As he grew up, he grew to enjoy rather than resent its silliness, as it made his fearsome appearance seem less daunting to others; it's hard to be afraid of someone that reminds you of fluffy, colorful confectioneries, after all. Over the years, it has transformed into a plethora of sweet-themed derivative nicknames, but to his not-so-little-anymore friend, he will always be just 'Cake.'

Explanation:

This nickname was given to her by neighbouring lion prides about as soon as this lone hyena raider came to plague the Valley of Kings - although at first, nobody could tell what animal the attacker was, thus earning this pitch-black predator the obscure name of Darkness. Silent as the night and deadlier than a bird of prey, she quickly grew to become number one menace for anyone wishing to travel "her" territory in the dark - and there could be no worse choice for a suddenly hazardous path than the small rocky passage she settled in, for it was a common route between several local settlements and a waterhole. She assaulted both prey and lions, prey entering and vanishing in the rocky canyon like it never existed, and lions being suddenly hit out of thin air, knocked over with hard bites, and robbed of whatever valuable thing they were carrying.

Her habit of sleeping ontop of fresh pelts of her previous meals made it a challange to identify her scent - only much later the local lions could tell she was a hyena but it was already too late - superstitions peaked, earning Nyeusi the fame of being a ghost (later going as far as speculating she's a wraith, embodiment of all hyenas lions have wronged in the past, sent to haunt their descendants by a vengeful hyena shaman). That story suits her just fine - in fact, she's quite proud of the impression she made on locals.

The morning was quiet, the birds singing joyously and the shadows of leaves dancing along the ground. The sun beamed down upon the red lion, who, having promised to complete his guard duties, decided instead to take advantage of the warmth of the day and sprawl out on a perfectly placed boulder on the pride’s Eastern border. This could totally count as border patrol, anyway.

Stretching his paws out, the lion sighed, completely content in his morning’s actions-
“Hello.”
Hearing the word, whispered as softly as a breath of wind, Djall leaped to his paws, fur standing on end. The lion’s red eyes landed on the dark shape, almost camouflaged perfectly in the shadows of the day.
Still startled, the lion desperately flattened his fur, trying to look nonchalant.
“Jeez, friend, don’t sneak up on a guy like that-”
“I apologize. I spoke with your leader, my name is-”
“Tacet, right! Yeah, Sarasa told us about you. You’d better stop sneaking up on people like that, lions around here will start to think you’re up to something shady.”
The hyena merely blinked, clearly unfazed by the lion’s words.
“Mhm. Exactly why I am introducing myself to the pride’s guards who will be near my home. Although, you seemed to be working so hard, I was almost pressed to interrupt you.”
Tilting his head to the hyena’s sarcastic words, watching him already begin to disappear into the underbrush, Djall grinned.
“Yeah thanks. See ya ‘round... Shady.”

Explanation: Chibueze has had a lot of nicknames in his time as a member of the pride. Mostly because “Chibueze” tends to be a little hard to say. Plus the fact that lions tend to have a harder time in the “ee” sound than the hyenas. Most of the time, he goes by “Bayo”, which means “to find joy” or “optimist”. It was a nickname given to him by his childhood sweetheart, his closest friend. As he’s grown up, It’s meant more and more to him. He’s remained a rather playful and amiable hyena. He’s always been the one to look for the bright side in his pride. Despite his inky coat’s sinister appearance, his cheerfulness seems to light up any group he’s in. As the one who teaches both the pride’s lion and hyena cubs, he tries to teach them not only the skills they’ll need to thrive in the Valley and the moral code of the Valley but the art of being a joyfinder as well. There’s nothing that can’t be made better with a smile and a happy heart, after all! If one can find happiness in everything, he reckons, than one can be happy through anything.
