floc name: Bailey
prompt:
As they stared out the open window, shivering with both the cold wind biting at their face, and the sense of thrill and fear they got from looking out; Bailey felt enraptured. Every night, they would look out the window like this, unable to stop themselves, unable to look away. It wasn't an obsession... No, no, it was just something Bailey felt compelled to do, something they had to do, for the forest speaks to them. Not exactly in words, but chitterings, hoots, screeches, rustlings, and creakings.
Was it simply the trees? The animals as they went about their lives? Or something more sinister?

Bailey did not know. What they did know, however, was that the forest grows bigger at night.
This is part of why they watched the forest at night; out of admiration for its power, its all-encompassing depth and darkness, yet also full of life, secrets...they felt fear when they watched the forest too... What were those noises truly? And if they stopped keeping vigil, would the forest grow faster at night? Slowly creeping up on them whilst they slept, and taking over the house?!
The forest was not that far away. /It could do it/, Bailey thought to themselves, /I've seen the way it moves at night, leaves angrily thrashing about. What's stopping it from taking over everything?/
So Bailey watches, listens, and guards their family. /I'll make sure the forest can't sneak up on them./
During the day Bailey sleeps. The forest feels safer then, less angry, less up to no good.
Sometimes their key holder's children go to play in the forest, which worries Bailey. It is during the day, but how safe are they really? Inside it's safe, warm, and comfy, and there's good food to eat.
They could maybe follow and play with the kids, but Bailey doesn't want to go outside, inside is the best place you see. There's something about staying inside that made them feel safe and protected.
This house is their castle to defend, and nothing can breach its walls, so long as they remain vigilant.
On some nights however, the forest makes some particularly eerie noises, /Monsters!/ Bailey is certain in this, and on those nights Bailey closes his lookout window, shudders a little, and goes off to find their keyholder for cuddles of reassurance and comfort.
Other nights, the forest's shadows creep up gradually towards the house, stretching out its long fingers, searching for prey, but instead of getting frightened, Bailey becomes more protective and defensive; their fur bristles, and wishes they could do something to scare the chilling reach of the forest away from them and the house.
A growl or bark perhaps? Something, anything, to stop the encroaching darkness from touching their place of safety.

On warm summer days, when the breeze is lazy, and naps are hard to fight off, Bailey wonders about going out into the forest themselves, it does still draw them in you see, despite their misgivings.
For the forest seems so innocent on those days, sunshine sparkling through the leaves, insects humming, and birds singing.
/What would it be like? Could I see a unicorn? Books say they live in forests after all./
Their keyholder has definitely encouraged this curiosity, egging them on to go see what it's like with the kids sometime. Maybe Bailey would come to love the forest even, but Bailey has their doubts about that...
/I mean really, all the things that make those noises at night still live in the forest in the day too, they're probably just sleeping during the day like me. I wouldn't want to go out of my way and attract unwanted attention./
Bailey believes that the forest simply prefers to hunt at night you see, and Bailey wasn't about to let their guard down around the forest like that, they had a duty to protect their family after all.

.:prompt:.

"What do I think of forests?" I repeated the question back into the human's mind,
thinking on how to best answer. Many different thoughts flitted through my mind as fast
as the wind rustling my fur. Forests make me feel both happy and maybe a little bit sad.
Perhaps, not sad but maybe nostalgic? That might be a better word for it I think. Forests
firstly were peaceful, relaxing and beautiful. I feel more at home in a forest than anywhere
else honestly. I'd lived alone in one for a number of years before a human had found my
key and by extension, me. Realizing that I still hadn't answered I pressed images and
thoughts into the humans mind as I finally answered their unexpected question.
"I think forests are quite amazing. I love them really. There's life hidden all around
even when it can't be seen. They're vast and life always finds a way to carry on in a
forest. A vast forest fire could wipe out an entire forest but hidden beneath all the
ash are seeds that had previously fallen that will grow into mighty trees. Forests
cycle and cleanse themselves and they always overtake what man has made given
enough time to do so. Forests are both strong and withstanding but also beautiful
and peaceful. I'd rather be in a forest than most anywhere else honestly." I pause
letting the images clear from the humans mind before finishing with one soft phrase.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"Forests feel like home."

prompt: oh, well forests? they're quite pretty and darling. they can also go through so many changes; they can be painted in green and the colors of spring; or perhaps oranges, yellows, and reds with the brook stream of fall; or just maybe brushed in a cover of snow, blanketing over the grass to make an peaceful scene. overall, their quite beautiful. one of the better features of nature.

prompt:
They are places of life and death. Beautiful in they life that roams beneath, within, and above the canopies. Providing shelter for those who need it. Growing food for all creatures to share. Full of lively sound as the leaves rustle and the birds sing. Full of life.
And yet, death follows. The leaves turn yellow, red, and orange, then fall. Detached from life. Rotting fruits breaking open upon impact against the solid ground below. Creatures dying and creatures being killed. The death of creatures is one such instance of death that I have personally witness. My handler is one such creature that must kill to survive, hunting to provide for herself and the giant furry monster she calls pets in the far north.
Don't get me wrong, I love Shallyaa just as I love the forest. Ah, but I guess I did not share just how much I love the forest. Hard to say really. I like to contemplate the things within it, if that helps answer your question a little bit.

The Floc slowly spins as they float there. Humming thoughtfully in their head, projecting it into the humans' minds, as if thinking. After spinning around a few more times it would appear the Floc was not about to give a clear answer to the stranger and Shallyaa stood and held out her hand for her companion to float onto and hover above.
"Well, it's time for us to go." Shallyaa said to the curious stranger who had not stopped asking questions since they met the tiny floating fox-like creature.
Indeed! The forest waits for no one. The Floc projected into the mind of the two humans.
"What does the forest have to do with needing to leave?" The stranger looked confused.
That is a good question indeed.

Flaris has been alive for a long time. No, it was not a question. It was a declaration, as
flox live naturally to their 100th year, a century, before dying as all of them were immune
to diseases, unlike most humans. They just couldn't physically get sick and ascend to heaven early
unless hurt by some outside force. As such, they have seen the rise and fall of many things and
in this case, forests and so has Flaris.

He's been alive for so long that memories seem to scatter and dissipate into sand much like how
an hour glass slowly tips to its end. So long that, that he wonders how can anyone stand
to live for such a seamless eternity, haunted by stories and actions they've done in their life?
Okay, so maybe he is a bit jaded but it still didn't mean anything and it certainly did not
affect his opinion on forests at all. He swears it doesn't affect it at all. Fine, scratch that, it
totally did.

So, where to start? There have been many beginnings and endings in a lifetime, so many that
he's practically lost count. Most have been given and forgotten to the wind at this point so
how about the first house? The one he had lived in for almost all his life before relocating once
his parents had died, how about it?

The one which had a colorful vibrant forest behind it and fond memories tossed and bundled
up in each corner and ugly patterned furniture that he can not help but sigh and brighten
from how strong the warmth of nostalgia was until it had happened. The one where
literally everything began and concluded.

The one where he was born.

-

Flaris was born an only child to a single mother. His father, having not wanted any kids,
divorced her and left shortly afterwards on his 10th birthday, though he did try in the beginning.
He was never seen again but he neither cares nor thinks about him. Not even when his classmates
teased and jabbed at it, pointing at him and whispering behind their perceived barriers. Not
a word. Not when he fears fueling the rumors and implicating his only living relative who often
times, was nonexistent (too absent-minded, thinking about the past, about what could have
been) though she loved him very much.

"Hah! Your father thought you were so ugly as a baby that he left!"

"Who's that in the corner?"

"Oh, you haven't heard? He's the only floc in this class who's doesn't have both parents!"

"I had a feeling there was something wrong with you when I first sat next to you."

And if he ran into the forest to cry the next day, well, it's not like anyone knew or even
cared as the only floc who did, was not there at the moment.

The trees started to become a place to hide his tears, a symbol of loneliness and insecurity.

-

Before that, Flaris remembers days of liquefied gold in flashes- soft laughter, sunshine,
reading books in the black couch by the window, the weirdly patterned wall painted in splotches
of colored rainbows, the clunky sound of the coffee machine in the mornings (both the courtesy
of his dad), the smell of his mother's favorite brown, cozy sweater- and then everything was
suddenly dull when the divorce happened.

Things that once seemed bright and radiant as the sun seemed dark and cold, and hewasscared.
The jungle now appeared to be closing, swallowing everything in its path, behind his father's
retreating back as he departed away, away from him and his mom, the family, their family.

And if he tried to fit the pieces of a shattered image left behind from one of his parental figures
into that of a hero, one that had died fighting a vicious dog in the cover of the plantation to
protect his brood, well, no one had to know. No one would ever have to understand anyways
that he felt guilty and younger than ever.

-

When Flaris grew older, he realized that it was not his fault that his father had left, that he
had to ignore the snickers behind his back and push all the blame onto his missing parent.

It had nothing to do with him sowhydoyoukeepcallingmeafreak!?

The forest that had once represented one of grieving, then sorrow, had at some point
became hatred.

-

By the time he was well into his fifties, he knew better. Flaris now had all the facts
to why his mom was divorced and all the circumstances that had come into play in the
long run of his parents' relationship. His bitterness began to bleed and blend into apathy
and grouchiness when certain touchy topics came up and eventually, he forgave his dad,
though he did not forget however.

Nowadays, the woodland of secrets that had once been thriving, flourishing beyond
the boundaries of his old residence had long since been mowed down and turned into
a parking lot as well as a park. It also now came to represent to him what it used to be in
his childhood- freedom, happiness, love, and death- the cycle of life in general's beauty.

prompt: A soft whisper enters your mind, a rustle like that of wind tousling ferns. Forests.. are living things, with minds of their own. The enchantress Illuminates. They have many ears, and many eyes. Their pulses beat with the rhythm of a thousand hearts. Each one is unique, no two share quite the same temperament. Some are treacherous, some are kind, some are daunting and others are even merry. Whether they become what they are because of the life that flourishes there, or if what resides there does so due to the forest’s likemindedness is a wondrous mystery for those in search of answers to nature’s secrets. She pauses, adjusting to a musing and wandering tone. I have had forests for dearly loved friends, as well as felt the animosity of wild and ancient life brooding against all that has changed in the world. Her voice rumbles softly with consideration. If there is any advice I could give you, it would be to remain watchful, to let the forest reveal itself to you, and to always show these primal forces the utmost respect. Then perhaps one day you may find yourself with a strong shelter, a cozy leaf bed, and a benevolent host of your own. Her parting words are full of soft warmth, reminiscent of sunlight filtering through a shaded canopy. I wish you luck.
