- The smell of worn books mingled with soot and gasoline as the door to Wayfinder's Books opened, a customer leaving with her novel in hand. Eran enjoyed the bit of fresh air - not because the stagnant environment of the shop was stifling, but because the neutral scent of the outdoors allowed him to reset, take in the booksmell all over again, like he was entering the building for the first time that morning.
A purple-tinged light creeped into the corners of Eran's vision, covering the book in front of him with whimsical light. A fan of fantasy might conclude the vibrant plum hue was some otherworldly portal opening up, a Narnian gate that would soon spill forth with something fantastical like an alien wielding a saber, or an alternate dimension version of yourself.
An avid reader of nonfiction such as Eran might take the time to look over their shoulder and notice the fluorescent grow lights stationed in the corner of the shop - surrounded by a heaping helping of succulents and other such "soothing" plants, of course. These held an important place in the shop - local plant fanciers even purchased from the selection - and they happened to be the Eran's pride and joy. He'd managed to convince his boss to fancify the shop, giving it more hip decor. Plants and plaid carpeting, new shelving units - Wayfinder Books wasn't lacking in funds, really. It was close to the city and reading real books was trendy.
Managing the shop like this was like living in some sort of romanticized indie film. Eran considered himself a realist, and tried not to play into the stereotype all too much. He read Hebrew books when there weren't customers, tidied up around the place, reorganized the books that ended up out of place or on the floor (thanks, kids).
Life here was boring, an Eran didn't mind it that way. Pay was enough to afford his apartment, despite the creaking floorboards and leaky ceiling. He was a self-made Kal; heck, his parents didn't want him to come live in the city like he now did, and here he was. Young and happy with a stagnant life. Maybe he'd change it up, get a different sort of coffee on the way home.
As the day ended, Eran followed his usual protocol. Set the lighting timer, do a bit of dusting, fill out his time sheet. He grabbed his jacket from the hanger behind the front desk (brown, one of those with fluff around the neck), checked his pocket for his mobile phone, and headed out the door.
All was normal on the walk home. The concrete was cooling in the twilight, and the moon was barely visible in the sky. The sky seemed awfully vibrant today; usually dull oceanic hues were changed for a borealis of salmon, greens and pinks. Eran almost stumbled over his own feet few times while looking at it. Something was mesmerizing about it, different. Something interrupting his day-to-day grind.
When the pale moon began to virrr and rumble, getting closer with each passing second, Eran was quite sure the new sky wasn't just something off with the weather.
Perhaps he wouldn't go to work tomorrow.
