Username: Vinson
Name: Suzzallo’s Watch the Sunlight Fade ‘Maisy’
Name Meaning(s): a diminutive of Margaret, the name of several saints, queens, and princesses. in one legend a Saint Margaret escaped from a dragon and was depicted in numerous works of art. Maisy was also the name of a mouse in a British children’s television show in which she and her friends went on adventures together. The registered name is a lyric from Hozier’s ‘No Plan’, which does have some language so I won’t be posting a link.
Gender: Female
Prompt: (376/200)
The water laps gently at the shore, and Maisy wags her tail slowly as her old eyes sight the lovely Puget Sound. This has been a routine for Suzzallo’s oldest, grayest girl for years now, and Maisy’s old ears are not deaf to the crash of the waves and the whistle of the wind. She begins to whine, panting and hoping to taste the salt on her tongue. Oliver laughs and parks the car, hops out and opens the trunk. Maisy is much too old to jump out herself, of course, and so he gently lifts her out of the trunk and places her on the rocky gravel of the parking lot. She barks and begins to walk down to the shoreline, old joints stiff and her gait more of a waddle, but her ears are perked and her tail wagging as Ollie cracks a smile, locking the car and following Maisy slowly. She knows exactly where to go.
You can see the excitement in her body as she stands in front of the water, gently quivering, mouth open and tongue hanging from her maw. Her paws lift up and down, pawing the sand, until she receives her go ahead cue and goes bounding - well, hopping - into the Sound. She barks happily as her body crashes into the water and suddenly she is a puppy again, her old joints comforted by the icy waves and her body nearly weightless as she floats above the surface. Ollie follows her in, smiling and splashing, and Maisy eats up the attention, happiness and excitement simply exuding from her. She is young once more, her bones no longer stiff and heavy, and sight is not required to splash in the waves, to bump and crash into her handler. She forgets that Oliver was only a boy when she was an accomplished herding dog, forgets that she never took the time to have pups of her own, forgets that her body is now old and tired and uncooperative.
When Oliver gently holds Maisy up in the deep water, all of her troubles and her pain float away and her body is young once more. Her joints are no longer stiff, her bones no longer ache, and she is free.
