Sound: north loves the sound of bells jingling. every time it's heard, the kalon can't help but smile, it's something that comforts them, for an odd reason. they discovered it when they were given a toy to play with when they were younger that had a little bell. they heard it, the noise intrigued them, and ever since it gives them a strong, nice feeling of nostalgia. if they find anything with bells on it like a hat, a toy, or even some clothes, there's a huge chance they'll attempt to get that item for themselves. not in a selfish way at all, it's just harmless collecting since they enjoy the noise so much!

The spirit of the Ice and Wind, Winter herself? Like the singing of otherworldly whales, the crackling ice itself deep beneath you puts on an eerie beautiful song, a song that’s just for you. Feel Winter’s cold breath upon you as you hear the echos of this singing ice. Stay awhile and listen to the deep, ancient, wild music of the Earth beneath the starry expanse of the constellations. Sound: The sound that echoes through the valley and the mountains and comes from the frozen river is Una’s favorite sound. Do you know what it is? It’s the sound and song of the Kalons hitting their hammers onto their chisels to crack the ice. Their song is as loud and clear as the ringing of their hammers to crack the ice. People can hear their wonderful song from across the valley and they love to hear it too. Una loves to hear it because it reminds her of her childhood because she would listen and watch them as they worked. 100/250

Every summer on the arctic coast black-legged kittiwakes gather to breed. The small-boned bright-eyed birds spend almost their whole lives on the sea, returning to shore only to start and raise their families and every year Soren comes eagerly to his front window to watch them. He's lived in the same slant-sided house since he was born, every floorboard and cupboard long familiar to him, every creak in every step a fond memory -- but the kittiwakes are his favorite of all.

Kittiwakes are famous for their raucous calls, for the cacophonous "kittee-wa-aaake" shrills repeated over and over as they move from fledglings to mate, from nest to sea. Soren sits on his patio swaddled in the thickest flannel blanket he owns and smiles to hear them.

When he was a child, before his mother passed, she would sit him on her knee every summer and bounce him in rhythm to the kittiwake's loud cries. She would smooth his pale hair with one hand and tease him: "You're something like a kittiwake, Soren."

Soren knew the game well. He'd screw up his face and say loudly, "I'm nothing like them, mama!"

She'd always grin and start in with a litany of, "Mama, mama, mama"s, stamping his forehead with a loud kiss as punctuation to each word.

Soren would laugh himself sick over it, over her easy smile and gentle hands. Decades later he spends his summers much the same, listening to the "kittee-wa-aaake" cries every summer.
