i'm excited for another full year for being in kalons. so this staff fairy/folklore theme is quite nice and fun to work with. So I went with my favorite Japanese folklore.

Oni ( 鬼 おに ) is a kind of yōkai, demon, ogre, or troll in Japanese folklore. They are typically portrayed as hulking figures with one or more horns growing out of their heads. Stereotypically, they are conceived of as red, blue or white-colored, wearing loincloths of tiger pelt, and carrying iron kanabō clubs.

For this I'll love for you to write a simple short story of how they can befriend anyone without scaring them?

prompt; everyone in my village is scared of me. my mother can't even look my direction without screaming in terror. i guess thats what is expected, considering my appearance. i just want friends, thats probably why i go to such extreme measures to make them. i left for the mountains a year ago and officially transformed. a witch helped me appear less scary. she shortened my teeth, lengthened my hair, and taught me proper nail care. and while i must say, that it all seemed quite magical, it was never truly me. i couldn't yell "boo" without getting a few laughs, or show my teeth without a dentist practically throwing silver drillers at me. it wasn't until four hundred years later, did i realize the truth. if people were truly terrified of me, then i shouldn't change how i looked. i should accept myself for who i am and what i grow to be. and so, after nearly four centuries of me yearning for friendships, i finally went back to my little hometown and settled down for realization. instead of acting wholesome or scary, i stayed true to my colors. i helped out orphanages and decorated peoples houses for halloween and christmas. sure, a normal being could reach up to their roof with a ladder, but me? all i had to do was stretch my arms to hang the twinkling lights and spooky ghosts. people practically fanned themselves around me to be my friend. my way to friendship with people was to just be myself, and not change who i was. it turns out that just believing in my hopes and dreams, made me less scary. and that was something that i could live with.

I’m what they call in the acting industry a haunt actor. We’re paid by haunted house attraction owners and amusement parks to go around in masks and wreak absolute havoc for minimum wage. Only I don’t need a mask. Now, normally most people would chalk that up as just something for rebellious teens, but I’m on the older side. The much older side. I just celebrated my 3,000th birthday last June and don’t look a day over 23! That curse has been holding strong and my appearance is still no less frightening. I was only trying to have some fun, but I should have known better. Ghosts aren’t known for being very forgiving when they’re messed with and, growing up in a culture that respected the deceased, I knew full well the risks I took. I should have known better than to climb up a memorial, but it had looked like fun, egging my friends on as we stood up high to see the ornately decorated graveyard lit with funerary candles. I was beautiful then, but that angry spirit took my glossy fur and traded it for tiger skins and angry red markings. I lost my friends and was forced to be a wanderer as the spirit was, a feared paraiah. Nowadays, I live on the fringe of society, a cryptid who emerges only to try and at least do the one job I can do. I try to make the best of it, but I’m still very isolated. My job makes me feel a little better, but I don’t get a kick out of scaring people like my coworkers do. You wouldn’t, either, if you’d been doing it for thousands of years. At least the horror enthusiasts and teens who work there see me as a local superstar. Eventually, though, they get new jobs and forget about the haunted house they used to work at one month out of the year and I’m left just as lonely as before.


One night, during opening week, a parent brought his young kid through as a “coming-of-age”. I’ve seen this a million times over and I hate it. Scary attractions should always be fun, not traumatizing, and this was way past the point of “fun”. What’s even worse is that these types of parents often ask us actors to scare their kids even more! The poor little girl was bawling and, instead of doing my typical scare routine as with most guests, I dropped down on one knee and waved, smiling. She wiped her eyes, reached out her arms in what I expected to be a high-five. Instead, she surprised me with a hug. I walked ahead of their group through the maze, letting other actors know not to scare her. At the end, she ran up to me for one more hug and told me, “You’re a nice monster. Thanks for not scaring me. I was already too afraid. ”


Now I was starting to tear up! Someone had seen past my scary appearance and finally saw me the way I had wanted to be seen, as a comforting, guiding friend. Even monsters can have soft hearts. (526/500; will edit)





Note: Based off a true story (other than the curse of course, haha!) If I win, she’s becoming my haunt acting character for next October and I’m commissioning a costume for sure!!! Most people would probably think I’m a werewolf but I’d know better. She even fits with the theme/color scheme of the haunt that I work at!!!

prompt; Patrick perked up his ears and crossed his eyes. The small creature in front of him began to giggle. He glanced down for a split second to look at her smiling face, before crossing his eyes again. He stuck out his tongue, short as it was, but it still managed to reach up to his furry nose. Now the giggling creature erupted into laughter, rolling onto her back and kicking her legs wildly in the air. Patrick grinned, he loved it when she laughed. He trotted happily over and nudged the top of her head with his snout, she shuffled to sit onto her knees to grasp at his curly black locks.

This was by far his favorite part of the day, the time he got to spend with the young human child he took in. He remembered the day vividly. He had been out by the river just a short distance away from his cave. The water gurgled and bubbled, making its way through a path of stones and mud. He watched the water carefully, waiting for fish to pass by for his meal. Then suddenly, a splash echoed through the air. He picked up his head and looked around, when he saw something unusual. Just downstream, the young girl waded through the shallow water, splashing around enthusiastically.

Patrick let out a curious grumbling noise. He was born mute, and while he couldn’t properly call out to the child, she too peaked her head up to look at him. He had successfully gained her attention. Her smile grew and she rushed over to him, quickly burying herself in the fur around his neck. Where she had come from, he had no clue, but she was clearly alone with nowhere else to go. So kneeling down, he lowered his head to the ground and made his best attempt to pat the back of his neck. Even more thrilled than before, she climbed onto his back, holding onto his scruff like a bridle, and so, he brought her home.

From that day on, they became fast friends, giving each other the company they desperately needed, and giving Patrick a new reason to go out and walk through town. The usually frightened faces of the other kalons began to shift whenever he brought her with him. Instead of running, the townsfolk would come up to say a quick hello. She helped to show the side of him that nobody had seen before, the side of him that could never hurt a fly. The soft cuddly side that wanted nothing more than a pal to spend time with.

His circle of friends grew like wildfire, and the happiness Patrick felt did the same. While he knew the child would someday have to leave him to go back to wherever it was she had come from, what she had given him already gave him the hope that he’d never have to be all alone ever again. That was all he could ever ask for. [500/500]

You see, Akui does have 'friends' already. Well, one, singular friend...
Akui met Isaiah a few years ago when the lad found him badly wounded in a dark alley. After Isaiah brought him home and nursed him back to health, Akui vowed his debt and loyalty to Isaiah from that day on. Even though he's saved Isaiah from countless near death experiences and fulfilled the debt, Akui still sticks around Isaiah because secretly, he loves the companionship. For Isaiah however, even though he's gracious of the very large beast protecting him, said very large beast can be a bit too much to handle! Akui, having lived with Isaiah for some time now, still thinks that their current apartment is still too small and likes making 'adjustments' everyday by destroying stuff. Also, he mostly stays home while Isaiah is at work and destroys things out of boredom or sometimes goes into the apartment building's parking lot to harass someone. Can you imagine the absolute fun it is to come home from a long day to see your fridge smashed in half, a broken TV, and a neighbor's noise complaint about your unruly roommate? So, to help him calm down, be civilized, and get out the house more, Isaiah's been working on helping Akui get more friends! (And hopefully move out of Isaiah's place...)

With the help of Isaiah's other friends, who are still a bit apprehensive of Akui, they are trying to get Akui more socialized and used to others! First attempt at helping Akui get some new friends was a major flop tragically. They secretly came up with a surprise party at Isaiah's place. After getting the party set up and Akui outside with Isaiah, the partygoers jumped out in a excited uproar when Akui stepped into the apartment. Alarmed by the noise and people, Akui flew into a rage and started smashing the whole place up, luckily no one was harmed in the chaos! Isaiah and his friend group decided to rework their methods and try for a more 'easy' approach. With some work, they managed to make Akui at little less intense and more approachable. They helped him recognize emotions and their meanings, how to start up a conversation, come off as approachable, personal boundaries as well as help squash some bad habits of Akui like his constant booming voice and messy hygiene! Akui felt it was foolish at first but since Isaiah supported the efforts, he followed through.

Since then, Akui's been getting better but still a bit aggressive when problems arise. Even then, he's found another friend, an optimistic girl named Katarina! She's happy to be friends with the big guy while Akui was hesitant at first but now loves her exciting energy!

Rock always had a hard time around others. He wasn't very stylish, never kept his hair in check (he had once found a muffin in it), couldn’t tell a joke and for the life of him, could not cook. But although the minor flaws he always had a smile, spoke in a very polite tone, could eat a whole pie by himself (if you call that a skill) but most of all, he was strong. Very, very strong. Cow got its head stuck in the fence, all good he could pull the fence apart to get it out. Tree fell down in the storm last night, easy, he can lift it with one hand. The baker can open the cellar door, he can - whoops broke it might need a new door (at least it’s open now). So despite his flaws he has one thing that allows him to garner the kindness of others. He was strong.

When he was younger his father used to say to him “You may not be able to count to ten or know how to cook but you're the best at chopping wood”, yea probably not the most inspirational thing you were hoping for but for Rock it was the best thing he ever heard. That's right he can't read but he sure can hunt a whole deer by himself. So from a young age although he wasn’t like others they didn’t shun him, instead they actively sought him out. Calling his name out loud when they needed a hand and he would gladly obliged. This kindness was given back too. He couldn’t cook so his neighbour would for him, he couldn’t read the mail so the postal boy would help, he wore his pants backwards (well that's his problem).

Many times it would happen, people from other villages coming for trade and such, to which whenever they saw him, would give looks of disgust and fear, sometimes they would spit at him, call him names. That was rather stupid of them, cause he was strong. Traveler got their wheel stuck in a pothole all good he’d just lift up the whole carriage, tripped over while running from him, all good, he’d lift them up gently, pat the dirt off of them, and hand them a cookie from the bakery. Then ever so slowly he wasn’t so scary anymore, the children thought he was pretty cool (more like they thought his club was cool), the adults enjoyed his company (free box lifting and all you had to do was give him a meal). So although he looked scary and a little bit hairy, because he was strong (and polite), he could easily befriend others, well for the price of a pie of course.
