It sounds unbelivable that it's been a whole year...it's been one of the wildest years ever but dang, y'all, thank you for sticking through with it, and I hope you continue at it, I believe in ya <3!!! Now onto what you're here for:

Cadejo is a common creature in Central American folklore, pretty much every country has their own version and legends surrounding it.

The one I grew up with this costa rican version; a large black dog dragging chains wherever it goes, that can is seen by vagabonds, drunkards and runaways as it stalks them through sunsets and nights.

The Cadejos will not leave until the person gets home, and it will never harm whoever its following, nor let them get hurt. Some people might not even realize it was behind them for a good while, as the only way to know is to hear the chains. However, after seeing it, the person will be unable to forget about it, and usually get frightened, try to run or pray, despite the Cadejos being harmless.

However, it is a sign. A sign that the person is going down a terrible path and that they should change their ways as soon as dawn breaks, as the devil has his eye on them. Because that time, a Cadejos was following them and protecting them whatever lurks in the dark.

But the next? The Cadejos won't be there to keep them safe.

prompt: Stifling a sigh, Ceth further retreated into the hood of his coat and watched the crowds thronging around. The air was full of excitement, kits crying out in joy and adults cheering as the first bonfire was lit. Excitement. That was a nice smell, like fizzing bubbles under your nose. Though it tended to make Ceth sneeze, it was still an emotion that he liked to smell. His eyes flicked across the crowd as he surveyed the scene. The square was crowded with bodies all jostling together as they made merry. Along with the excitement, there was joy, content, nostalgia...and just then, the faintest sour tinge of fear. Ceth grimaced. Fear was one of the emotions he hated smelling most of all. Leaning against the wall behind him, he pulled his gaze away from the glowing crowd and stared at the stones beneath his feet. A memory surfaced unbidden, always lurking at the edge of his mind when fear came into the picture.

He panted as he ran through the streets, the alleys winding endlessly in front of him. His heart was beating out of his chest, lungs burning as he continued onwards. He wasn't quite sure what it was that he was running from...or was it running towards? But he couldn't stop. His feet kept pounding against the slick rain-glazed stones until he lost his footing and slipped, hitting the ground hard. Ceth sat up and stared around. Something was wrong.

The buildings around him were empty and cold, shuttered and closed. But despite the fact that he couldn't see anyone around him, Ceth began to smell something on the cold breeze that blew towards him, something sour, like spoiled milk or rotten eggs. Even as he tried to get away from the encroaching scent it seemed to surround him, coating every part of him. Eyes watering, Ceth staggered to his feet, pushing himself off of the cold stones. It was then that the whispering began, starting quietly and gradually getting louder and louder. Eyes flickered around him, lamplike and eerie, and Ceth began to run again. But no matter how far or fast he ran he couldn't escape that smell, those whispers, the eyes that blinked at him out of the darkness.

Despite the warmth of the season Ceth shivered as he blinked, the old memory fading. It was that very dream, that he'd had as a young Kalon, that had signaled the beginning of his magic coming into being. It was a cursed magic, the ability to smell emotions, and it had caused him no end of trouble. His family had cared for him until he was old enough to leave home, but Ceth was under no illusion that it had been an easy time for them. The rumors of his magic had spread far throughout their small neighborhood and he'd been stared at whenever he went outside. It had been hard when he'd left, but his chance encounter with the current monarch had left him with a home and a job. Despite his magic being seen as socially unacceptable, she'd given him the opportunity to use it for the benefit of the country. And so Ceth found himself here, on the outskirts of various events, big and small, to collect information for Queen Selene and keep her up to date on the status of the country, how the people felt as a whole. No matter the morality of such an assignment, it was better than trying to find his way on the streets, surrounded by the judging eyes of the people around him. For that, he owed Selene his life. He would not - no, could not - go back to that. Ceth would not let his dream become his reality.

It was a day unlike any other. Thomas was the Dream Keeper, the Owner of Dreams. He watched over the dreams of the living, taking care of those who had troubling sleep. It was his job to watch over the dreams, and to keep any potential threats at bay. It wasn't very interesting, his job was very consistent. Most dreams were common, and the ones that weren't common, he entered and changed the course of the dream to be more natural. It wasn't easy dealing with the stress, fears and insecurities of others and have them weight himself down, but it was a noble job, and one he did with pride.

However, just because 90% of his time was in the dreams of others, doesn't mean he doesn't have dreams. He rarely does, so dreams are a scary thing for him. For one, he cannot control his own dreams, unlike what he does in the slumber of others. His dreams feel so much more real for him because being in dreams is his life, so he doesn't know the line between reality and the dream world after all the years, because the dream world became his world.
