errp: (your errp you're using in this prompt; if nonowner, use prize) Everest
prompt: Having been born during one of the coldest days of the year, Everest was used to snow, but even then-- Something made this night just a tad bit unbearable. She was shaking from ear to hoof and her breath hung heavy in the air, seemingly too cold to move away from her.

But even after everything she had been through, after the hours of looking and searching, she still refused to give up- If anything, she was even more determined now to find the others, refusing to give up hope.

She pushed through the thickness of the woods, despite the flurries of snow sprinkling down here and there, heralding the beginning of what would be possibly the biggest blizzard the area had seen in decades.

She worried a bit about how things were going back at Polar North, she wondered if the ranch had heard the news, if maybe Henry, Gabe, Hailey and Jack were thinking about her and waiting for her return with Sam.

She felt relief though, knowing that Hailey was left in charge and that the boys were responsible and helpful when Sam was away despite their occasional shenanigans when they were there.

Being lost in thought almost made Everest feel warm again. Almost.

She ducked a bit, thinking she saw long legs behind a log, but to her disappointment, it was simply a strangely shaped tree and the cold fog of her breath playing tricks on her eyes, it seemed like the forest was making fun of her, telling her that she's too late, that she'll never find them in time.

She snorted in annoyance, defiant undertones to the sound.

She was going to find them if it was the last thing she did, forest-schmorest! Blizzard-wizard! She would bring those horses home.

She couldn't let herself sleep peacefully again if she knew she gave up this early anyways, she just wasn't that type of mare.

errp: Emerging From A Chrysalis ~ Rysa

prompt:
Rysa perked her ears in anticipation, she was in the third and final trailer from True Elegance Barn. They arrived late on the first day and had parked next to the other two trailers. Rysa had relaxed most of the day while her human Megan had been helping take care of the horse from the first route. And just taking care of all the little things that need to be done around the barns and trailers. Megan had still found an hour or so for her and Rysa to go out on a quick trail ride to familiarize Rysa with the area at least a little.

The next morning dawned super nippy and cold, Rysa stood patiently while Megan got her tacked up. Rysa let out a happy sigh when she saw Megan bring her favorite navy blue fleece riding rug. She looked back a little confused when Megan strapped some bulging packs and a two horse blankets on top of them. Rysa knew they were going to help other horses but did they really need all that stuff. Megan gave Rysa a affectionate rub on the ears saying “I know it seems like a lot but the owner is almost never wrong about stuff. And better we have all this and not need it. Then to not having it and one of those poor lost horses needing it.”

Megan led Rysa to the meet up area, as they waited she chatted with some others who were waiting. They were amazed to find out that the young mare was partially blind in her right eye and that she actually spent most of her time in a harness pulling a cart. They were amazed at the trust between the two and the fact that Rysa was trained not only under harness but under saddle. Soon the leader of the group was calling them all together and they set out down the trail. They passed the second group coming back with the second group of lost horses, this boosted the mood of the final search party. That quickly wore off as it got very late and the trail they were following got worse.

Rysa was thankful she had Megan with her and she could trust her to guide her over this scary train. And know that Megan was keeping an eye on things on Rysa’s bad side. Just then a ripple of excitement and apprehension came through the search party. The last group of lost horses had been found, but they were in a cave. The group made it to the entrance of the cave and most riders had to dismount their horses as most of them refused to go into the dimly lit cave. Rysa on the other hand boldly stepped into the cave trusting in Megan and herself to navigate this strange new place. After all isn't this what they had been training for, to overcome unfamiliar even scary places. And work as a team to support each other, it also helped Rysa to know that she would be helping rescue scared and frightened horses like she and her mothers had been. Rysa wanted to help make sure they had someone there for them like her mother Duchess had been there for her. The duo moved through the cave with calmness and a determined glint in their eyes. They were not going to let anything stop them from there goal of helping the horse not even a dark cave and rough terrain.

errp: Sailor
prompt:
Sailor pawed at the ground, worry slowly growing inside of him. What if they couldn't find them? What if the blizzard hit in the middle of the search. No, Sailor couldn't think like that. The stallion shook his head, sighing heavily.

"Have you seen the path?" Someone muttered from not too far away. "Yeah, this is the most dangerous yet, all the barns had to pick the most sure-footed horses for this one," Someone else responded, getting a huff in return. "Yeah, I don't think some of the barns did. Look at that mare right there, she keeps slipping in the mud, no way she'll be able to get through this!" They exclaimed. "Or that stallion over there with his head down, the guy looks like he's about to fall asleep!" Sailor processed that sentence for a second, realizing that they were talking about him. He raised his head high. Sure he wasn't the biggest thing in the world but he still towered over the other. The horse that had been complaining shut up, walking off somewhere. Sailor heard the call for everyone to get ready to head out. Samuel lightly squeezed the sides of the stallion urging him forward.

Memories came flooding back to Sailor as he neared the path. The days when he was actually a search and rescue horse. Newfound energy sparked inside of the stallion as he broke into a trot right next to Lieu. At times it seemed to others that Sailor was leading the charge, but anytime Sailor got ahead of Lieu he'd slow down, letting the leader claim the front again. Samuel patted Sailor, knowing exactly what was going through his brain. They would find these horses and get them home where they would be safe and sound.

The group soon got to an extremely rocky area of the forest, this is where some started to struggle. A few horses slipped on the wet rocks, throwing their riders off balance. Some slowly fell behind as they tried and failed to navigate along the safest paths. Sailor didn't seem to falter at all.

This was all familiar to him.

Sailor confidently stepped from rock to rock, making it look like a walk in the pasture. He spotted the horse from before, who was now struggling to get over a certain set of rocks that Sailor practically danced over. He smirked, one should never judge a horse by it's cover.

errp: Maggie
prompt:

Maggie stood at the edge of the path confidently, looking up to see the many loose rocks and dirt. Thankfully, she was quite the muscular mare. Being small would truly work to her advantage- seeing as less weight meant less movement thus making it easier. Lifting the first hoof, she placed it slowly on the path in front of her. No movement. Good! This was a great start. She slowly began to climb, taking it slow to not disturb the rocks beneath her hooves. Suddenly, they began to crumble beneath her. "Dang it, dang it, dang it!" she huffed, stopping. A gust of wind pushed her back, and Maggie lowered her head, planting her feet firmly beneath her, however, due to the lightweight she slid back anyway. The wind passed, and she began moving forward again. This was proving more difficult than she expected.

This time, she decided to take slower but longer strides. As she climbed, this tactic worked much better for her. The wind blew again, and she shoved her feet into the dirt to give herself better traction to hold. Success! The wind passed yet again and she continued forward. Turning toward the group, she noticed a young foal losing her footing and sliding backward. Rushing, she headed quickly toward her, pushing her behind with her face until she was able to regain her footing.

"Come, little one, stay with me," she whispered, pulling her closer. Using the same tactics all the while keeping the filly close and pressed to her side, she finally reached the top. With this newfound tactic, she continued to go back up and down retrieving the young and elderly to help them reach the top despite their difficulty.

errp: One In a Million
prompt:
Merv was... Not used to the cold, to say the least. He was used to warm stalls, dry shavings, and a nice big bag full of hay. Yet here he was out in the cold, a western saddle on, which he wasn't so sure about, and Azalea nudging him onwards on the foreboding and mud-slick path. He'd much rather be training for a show than this, and he had a bad relationship with training. His legs were cold, he was nervous about the small stones rolling out from underneath his hooves, it was just an overall bad day for him.

Azalea was trying her best to not be nervous either, she didn't want it to rub off onto Merv and make the day even worse for him. She was walking carefully with the rest of her group, following the lead horse in solid pathways so that they wouldn't slip and get hurt on the rocky terrain. She respected the bravery and instincts of the lead horse and rider. They were deciding where the rest of them would walk and keeping everybody safe. Merv was surefooted, but not that courageous. She and Merv had been working together the longest out of her horses, she'd practically raised him and trained him. She knew she could trust him on this tough terrain, even if they both were a little nervous.

Azalea and Merv eventually caught up to the lead horse, walking behind them and following in their hoofprints closely. The last time Azalea rode out, she had been in the lead with Hunter. But this time, she and Merv were happy to hang back and provide support and help from the middle of the group. They did end up helping some of the other horses through a rather rocky path, letting them lean on Merv so support. Both of them were so ecstatic to see the third group of horses safe and sound in the cave and got to work on catching them so they could be taken back to safety before the storm hit. (342 words)

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxChevreuil

prompt:

Chevreuil looked towards the trail. The last set of horses were
out there. He knew it would be many times more dangerous
than the last, but it was a risk he was more than willing to take.
He set off with the other horses in his group. They were all alert
and paranoid. He tried to reassure them that everything would
go smoothly, but he could make no promises. He swallowed and
continued on.

The cruel weather wasn't helping their cause. They had already
put on some protective gear for the weather, but it was still
already so cold. The group huddled together, taking turns being
in the center of the group for warmth. Trudging along the path,
hoping find signs of any horses. A hoof prints, hair, anything.

The group continued along the path. It had nearly been an hour.
Everyone decided to huddle in some bushes a few feet off the
trail. They stayed there for half an hour, regained what energy
to continue they could, and started walking again. After fifteen
minutes of walking, there was finally a lead on a horse. A tuft
of hair, mottled hoof prints in the soil, they had a distressed
horse on their hands. However, the trails of hoof prints lead to
a steep slope. It was too steep for the whole group to safely
pursue the trail. Chevreuil offered to go up there, but being
alone is such weather isn't good. He promised to come down in
thirty minutes if he didn't see anyone up there. It was going to
be tough, but someone has to do it.
