Prompt: An odd sight to behold amongst the shade of Oregon's woods, Alopex's very existence remains a wistful, doubting thought for most. To be clear, he is very much alive, and is simply a burnished auburn relic of a world unseen.
Perytons, for centuries, have existed- in most instances, their magic permits them to be veiled in silence.
However, such magic requires practise, and every so often, fawns will have trouble utilising their cloaking abilities.
Born during a brutally cold early spring, Alopex's mother was a flighty doe, ill-minded to care for her offspring. Frequently wandering and failing to properly attend to her little one, she also never taught him how to properly conceal himself from threats.
Over time, she simply rejected motherhood in full, leaving a tiny, shivering bundle of fur crusted in frost.
Then a human came along- hiking a trail they'd never attempted before- stumbling upon the bizarre-but helpless- creature.
Alopex imprinted on the human rapidly, and grew to become a fine-looking stag. The human did all they could to try and hide his existence, and successfully raised the Peryton as best they could- over time, the animal's instincts even revealed his magic, allowing successful concealment from unwanted viewers.
Over the years, the human decided a special gift was needed- something to immortalize his companionship with such a creature. Crafting them himself, he cut, measured, sewed, hammered, and polished a handsome leather collar and short-lead, designed for backpacking excursions. Alopex took to it immediately, intrinsically understanding how much emotional weight such a gift would hold.
To this day, this Peryton wears his present proudly, and will often smile to himself when alone, knowing how special such a connection is.
To him, the collar and lead are messages of an undying family bond.
