Samehe was taken aback. I want my sister. That line in particular cut deep. Had she really been putting distance between them? One of their last interactions came to mind.
"Eleos, I'm heading out."
"Where are you off to this time, Samehe?"
She turned to see him gazing in her direction. "I made plans with some friends. We're just going to be hanging out."
"Oh. Sounds like fun."
"I'm sure it'll be boring. Don't wait up. Love you!"
Perhaps if she had been paying attention she would've noticed the hinting in the tone. That hidden question of "can I come too" underlying the "sounds like fun" statement. If she was being honest, the reason she hadn't invited her/him was the thought of what her friends would think. They all knew about Eleos- at least in the sense of their existence, but they weren't aware of his condition. Would they understand? What if they teased him? What if something had happened to him?
Maybe she had been insensitive. She took a deep breath, releasing slowly before looking up at Eleos. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you or make you feel incapable. I was... I suppose I was just worried on your behalf."
"You don't need to worry about me so much." Samehe dropped her head. Eleos must have sensed the pause and nudged her with a paw. "I'm not helpless, you know."
She chuckled softly. "Yeah, I know."
"You don't need to worry about what others will think. I feel if you're comfortable with it, then they will be too. Or at least they'll try to be in front of you."
She giggled. "I guess you have a point. Here I was worrying about how others would feel about you and not realizing I was doing exactly what I was afraid of- judging you." She hadn't meant it to be that way. Didn't even think of it that way. She thought she was protecting him from persecution. Instead, she had been a hypocrite. "I promise to work on it. I don't want this to come between us. You mean too much to me for that."
"Well, now you can prove it."
Samehe moved closer to give Eleos a hug. She still had a small tinge of guilt. But maybe there was something she could do to kick-start this. She pulled back from the hug. "Come with me."
"Where?"
"To meet my friends."
"...are you sure?"
"Yeah. They'd love to meet you."
Eleos smiled before nodding their head. "Alright then. Let's go."
Samehe led Eleos to the spot her friends usually hung around. As they got closer, she noticed there were a couple of lions there. Her friends took notice of them as they approached and gave the two warm smiles.
"Hey, Samehe. Wondered if you were coming out today."
"Yeah, just had some family stuff to take care of." She smiled at her brother. "This is Eleos."
