“It’s not a phase” Huah’s mother had tried to explain only 5 days after he was born to the pride healer. “He’s behaving strangely... and he keeps rubbing his back”
Huah’s mother had been right. Only two weeks later massive wings would spring from his back marking him as somehow divinely touched. Huah also was quieter than the rest of the cubs his age. His mother worried but she figured that if the gods had intervened with him that he would be fine.
Huah was an adolescent when he started speaking. He held wisdom beyond his years and his wings which had seemed to not stop growing had garnered him respect. He had also learned to relax now though and he often played with his good friend Mysk. Together he and Mysk would explore the world. Mysk never made Huah feel alien for his wings and they bonded deeply because of that.
And then the unthinkable happened. Mysk had been wandering to a watering hole and slipped, startled by a loud bird. They felt and hit their head slipping under. It was too late when they found him.
The pride was in deep grieving. Mysk had only been a young adult and a death like his had been rare. Everyone was worried about Huah knowing how good of friends they were. Huah had grown silent.
His mother had gotten worried about his silence. She asked him how he was,if he needed anything, if he could just speak to her. Nothing. Finally when she seemed to have given up he uttered quietly,
“it’s just a phase”
Huah’s mother was brought to tears again, “it’s not just a phase Huah, he’s dead”
Huah said nothing.
Each night he went out alone. He would circle the watering hole and then fly upwards. The pride was worried he would meet a similar fate. No one could stop him though as he circled the pit of water.
“Where do you go?” Huah’s mother asked him one night when he returned.
“To the watering hole”
“Yes but when you fly, where do you go?” She inquired.
“I visit him.” Huah replies matter-of-factly. She said nothing, how could she respond to her son’s delusions?
So the next day she followed him. Keeping to the shadows she watched him circle the watering hole and then suddenly shoot up into the air. She waited for awhile, squinting to see if she could find him. And finally she saw him again... but this time something glowed one his back.
As he descended she saw it was the shape of a lion. As they landed she nearly gasped once she recognized it. Mysk. The two lions embraced and started laughing as usual, as if Mysk hadn’t just been brought from the beyond. After that his Mother did not ask where he was going.
Two years later later she was on her death bed. As she spoke with Huah, her only child, she asked him what he had meant by “it’s just a phase.” And as she slipped into death he explained. To him this world was just the beginning. Just a phase of our life, where we are born.
“There’s so much more out there” he spoke to her. She has begun to realize she was now floating, a soul detached from her body and he was flying along with it. “This isn’t the end”
And together they ascended as the sun set on the horizon. She felt warm again as the light hit her and he dropped her off on a cloud. “I’ll visit you. And one day we can be together again”
