As a kit there was nothing she wanted more than a plush made just for her.

As much as she loved the hand-me-downs she received, the thought of having just one thing especially for her meant a lot. And it was due in no small part to the fact that she wouldn’t receive it with the understanding she’d have to just give it away someday; they’d be hers as she’d be theirs.

Eventually, this dream came true. Though she never asked, never lingered—so many times her eyes strayed to the build-a-bear store in the mall. While they usually went just for shopping or a quick treat, silently she always hoped that one day they’d veer towards the colorfully lit storefront. And that’s exactly what happened.

Expecting to shop for clothes or school supplies, she was caught completely off guard as they turned straight towards the store. Not wanting to get too excited in case she was mistaken, she had restrained herself from running ahead. Yet at no point did their steps waver; one, two, ten, until they were heading straight through the door.

Eyes growing wide at all the options, she practically bounced down the rows to the counter until something odd caught her attention. Abandoned on the bottom of a large shelf she noticed a plush of some kind. Of course she was determined to figure out why they were left there and went to investigate. As she pulled them out, she was all but mesmerized by the design. With custom patterns and pretty colors, she knew this was the one.

Her parents were less sure—stating they’d only be getting one stuffed animal—but her heart was already set. It may not have been made for her, but it was as good as; mix-match wings and all.
