Mirai was a curious cub. She loved asking her father questions late at night when she was supposed to be sleeping. It seemed her brain was most awake at night. Unfortunately for her, Pulan, her father was a little less truthful when he was eager to sleep. So when Mirai’s favourite night time question became the question of why she looked different to others, Pulan’s answers were… Rather unique.

“Why not? Don't want to be the same as everyone else” He replied the first night, hoping it wouldn't come up again. Mirai wasn’t to be dissuaded though. The question soon returned. But this time Pulan had a new answer.

“One night, when you were even littler a radioactive bat bit you, and so you became a bat lion, ready to defeat evil and be a true superhero.” That placated her for a week. It also made her do more chores and be kinder, after all that's what superheroes do right? But soon the novelty began to fade, as it does with young cubs and so her dash of good deeds settled to a more normal level.

“Ok I lied.” He said seriously before his face split into a grin. She didn't return it, sulkily watching her father. She was teething, her fangs a little sore and so she wasn't as impressed by her father's stories. “You bit the bat, not the other way around.” He laughed, laughing harder as she tried to keep a straight face. It didn't work for long.

A month or so later Mirai asked about her mother. After all, the other two cubs in their small pride had mothers, where was hers? Pulan for once wasnt sure how to answer. He had fallen in love before, but nothing had come of it. He thought for a moment before answering.

“I kissed a bat once, don't kiss toads though, you don't want to know how your brother turned out.” He had joked another time. That scared her though, worried about this lost warty toad sibling. Pulan had taken that lie back before the night was up.

“Well each of your little spots is a kiss I gave you when you were young… Oh you meant your wings and horns?” Pulan rolled his eyes and Mirai head butted him fondly. “Oh, come on how was I supposed to know, the first thing I always notice is just how cute you are.”

Mirai often knew her father was lying to her. Though she hated the connotations that came with lies, her father's answers were often a lot more like stories.

Stories that had helped her become the lioness she was now. They made her feel like she could be a good lioness, that she was loved and appreciated. When she was young she had worried this wasn't the case. Cubs and parents alike in the small lion tribe had pulled away from her and made strange gestures. But her father was always there and he never once pulled away or got annoyed at her.

As she grew up and things started to change Mirai started to wonder if she had imagined cubs and parents avoiding her. It didn't seem they did so now. Mirair was often a favourite in the pride as she had such a strong moral compass. She never spoke out of line, always tried to help others and worked hard.
It helped that every lion was important for the small pride, no one had the luxury of slacking off or being rebellious. They became more tight knit the harsher conditions got. And so Mirai’s flaws suddenly didn't seem so important, as long as she helped catch prey.

And catch prey she did. Being able to fly was easily her greatest strength, she caught birds and made for excellent ambushes. And when even birds were scarce she used her super powered ears to discover prey under the ground or hidden in tree trunks, be that rodent or sometime insects. Mirai was invaluable, so after just a year of her being huntress she became well respected, any superstition left on the back burner. It didn't seem to matter so much when Mirai was so obviously on the pride’s side.

So while Mirai knew she should hate how her father felt the need to lie to her it only made her thankful. She never felt unloved or unworthy. She always knew she could be just as helpful to the pride as any other cub, if not more helpful.

But of course, all good things must end. Pulan fell sick, his body racked with coughs even as the harsh winter warmed up. His days were numbered and the pride-

The pride was falling apart. They were no longer a close knit family. Instead sickness, rivalries and fighting over the last few resources had torn the small pride apart until one by one they went their separate ways. A couple of families had even offered to take Mirai with them, one mother even begging her to give up on her ailing father.

Even Pulan himself had told her to move on. But Mirai wasn't like that. Superheroes didn't do that, renown huntresses didn't do that.

“You should've gone with them, f-fangster dear.” Her father croaked, laying down and shivering despite the many leaves she had covered him with. She was on the lookout, without a pride you never knew when some hyena’s might linger too close.

“I'm not leaving.” She said, more steel in her voice than Pulan had heard before.

“They could have helped a new pride accept you.” That made Mirai take more notice. She came closer, laying by her father's side and lay a wing across him. He smiled softly at her, eyes filled with love as they always were.

“What do you mean father? I'll be fine, Ill just show them how valuable I am.” Pulan shook his head sadly.

“They won't give you the chance. I think it’s time I told you the truth.”

“Dad?”

“You're adopted.”

“Dad please you've been listening to too many stories again.”
“No, Mirai I'm serious this time.” He raises up onto his front paws as much as he can, watching as Mirai now paces. “I stole you from some demons, they were trying to make you like them.” Mirai’s world was crashing. None of this was right. Mirai couldn't be a demon! They were evil, cruel, their only purpose was destruction.

“I- No that can't be right, please Dad tell me you're lying.”

“I couldn't keep lying, but know this. You always make your own truth.”

Prompt: Res with unknown origins, appeared to the pride as a cub in the night and everyone was puzzled by him. Rumors say that his father was a bat, and he sprouted the features as mutations on his lion body. Ho'ohiehie thinks that he was created by a cruel god and left to be mocked. Some lions were afraid and didn't want to talk to him. However, the healer took him in and named him something that reflected his good soul. Ho'ohiehie wanted to dedicate his time to learning how to heal after this. The healer is the only one that truly cares for him and understands him, which he really appreciates.

"You're cursed."

"I'm what?!" a light, feminine voice exclaimed, the owner of such a voice looking to the rickety old lioness that she had come to visit.

"You are cursed," the older, grayer lioness replied, her voice scratchy and cracking.

"W-Why? How?"

"You know how."

The young lioness soon sighed and looked down to her paws, gently scratching at the dirt below. Indeed, she did know how... she just didn't want to elaborate on such a subject. She had done something... something that the vast majority of prides thought was wrong. And, of course, it was wrong, and this was what she had to expect for doing something so wrong.

The rickety, old lioness only smiled a seemingly knowing smile, her tail slowly flicking about behind her. "You met a handsome male shortly after your mate’s passing. A smooth-talking male who promised you the world if you’d run away with him. So you ran away with him… only to find that he had a more serious relationship that he’d hidden from your eyes." The female paused for a moment... for extra emphasis, of course. "You confronted him, only to find that he was not willing to risk one for the other. So you left, both him and your pride."

A singular nod was given at that, the young lioness just keeping her gaze glued to the sandy ground below. The shame and embarrassment was too much.

"...Not only were you banished from your pride, but you've also found that you are pregnant... am I correct?"

Another singular nod was given, and a soft sniffle thereafter.

"You've stated to me you've been feeling pains and you've been having nightmares most nights..." She sighed. “You are cursed. Not just by your previous pride, but by the gods as well."

"How do I get the curse lifted? Is there any possible way?" The young lioness begged. She was desperate. She barely got sleep with both the pains and her nightmares. If she was going to rear cubs, she knew she needed the sleep beforehand.

The older lioness, at that question, breathed out an exasperated sigh.

"There is no way that I know of that could break this curse," she replied. "All I would suggest is to pray, move yourself away from your old pride, and find a good place to have your cubs. I'm sorry, Delaney."

"...Thank you, Astra." And with that, Delaney rose to her paws, soon turning around to leave the old lioness's den. Nothing else was said between them... Delaney was cursed, and she had no way of fixing it. All she could do was focus on her future cubs. Perhaps they could be her new family... and she could have them to herself.

---

A scream could be heard above the trees, the sound of a lioness in shock carrying over the hills and valleys of the nearby swampland and echoing into the vast world beyond.

Her cub, Delaney's only cub... was a mutant and a monster!

As a newborn, this cub already had a pair of leathery wings, large, thin ears, a strange, wrinkly nose and horn-like nubs on it's head! It looked nothing like a cub was supposed to look like, nothing at all.

Delaney was quick to look around, only to scowl upon the cub she had brought into the world... it was... it was a monster, cursed just like her... only more deformed. She couldn't possibly see herself raising it. It had no place in any pride. It really was cursed... much more than her.

So she ran... Running far away from the cub and leaving it for dead.

---

But that cursed cub would be blessed, for the cave she was left in housed plenty of other creatures that looked more like her than even her own mother, though much smaller. The bats within the cave saw this little cub abandoned by a mother who didn't want her... but they saw it as an opportunity. Life was not a thing to be wasted! Life was precious, and even the bats within the cave saw that more so than even her own mother did. They would love her more than her mother ever would... all of them. Every single one.

The bats, one by one, fluttered down to the little helpless cub and engulfed her in their embrace, trying to keep her warm amidst the coolness of the dark and musty cave. They cooed to her softly to stop her crying, and soon all was quiet once more...

---

Years passed by and the lioness grew stronger and larger with her bat family at her side. So large, in fact, that she dwarfed all of them... But she didn't seem to mind. Over the years it just became a thing that Kamakshi didn't really take notice.

Much like her flying family, she slept during the day and flew at night, catching various bugs and birds, since bugs were rather small for her anyway. She also ate fruit with the other bats, just not as much. She was never sure why she didn't like fruit as much as the rest of her family. Half the time it gave her a bellyache, but they just told her that it was something that did happen, sometimes, between bats.

Of course, there were some things that she didn't quite understand. Like why she couldn't hang off the ceiling like the rest of her family could. Why she was so much bigger than her family members, why she looked somewhat like them and yet... like something else.

Her cauldron of bats never really told her she was adopted. For whatever reason they never thought to... She seemed happy with her family and she was well loved by the thousands of bats that lived in the cave she lived in. But little did they know she felt like she didn't quite belong. Not in the way that they thought she did.

But she learned to keep such things to herself and just continued on surviving. Years passed on...

But she hoped that, one day, things would get better. That she'd find clarity and answers as to what she really was and what really happened to her... For she had a hard time believing that she was born to this colony of bats. She also hoped she'd find an actual friend... a friend a lot like her.

Little did she know that such things would be coming sooner than she ever thought. (1,080 wc)

Prompt:

Levine sensed she was pregnant very quickly. Breaking the news to her mate Zion was one of the best things she had ever experiences; they had never been so excited and Zion kept gazing at her with such deep adoration in his eyes. It was definitely one of the happiest moments she felt they ever had together.

She had tried with Zion so long for cubs, but to no avail; having almost lost hope, the news of Levine's pregnancy was like a gift from the gods, it reignited their love again to be even stronger.

It was all going well. About a month in, the pride's healer had examined her and explained that everything looked to be going just fine. Levine felt the same way; she had never felt so alive and bright in all her years, the pregnancy seemed to give her more energy than she had even as a cub herself.

Which was why, when it was nearing time to give birth, Levine and Zion's eyes were shrouded with worry. Pain coursed through her in sharp waves; each time like an elephant's tusk impaling her. She gasped with laboured breaths, and the healer's paws were bloody. Something was drastically wrong, a complete juxtaposition from the rest of her pregnancy, and nothing had eluded to it.

Belakane was born still. Her fragile form neither rose nor fell, her fur paled. Zion mourned - Levine cried out.

Levine gave birth, then stilled. Her strong form slowed, lungs heaving one shaky last breath as she sobbed. Zion mourned harder.

Watching from above her body, stars dripped down Levine's cheeks as she silently cried. She had lost her cub and she hadn't even the chance to live.
Her tiny body curled up before her, starry and translucent. They were ready to make the path to the sky and be at peace.

Levine wasn't ready. She grasped her astral cub by the scruff and bounded - travelling over fields and rivers with great ease - leaping up to the highest mountain peak she could see. Belakane shook and mewled airily in her maw; she kept going, pushed on by the sound.

Reaching the peak of the mountain, she placed Belakane by her feet, raised her shaggy head up to the stars and roared - deafening, shaking the very ground beneath her, scaring a few of her ancestors away as shooting stars flew by - the sound bursting with the emotion of a mourning mother, a pain like no other.

"Bring my daughter back! Let her live, she did not deserve this!" she bellowed to the gods above her.
"There was no warning, So had no time!"

Silence rung around her.
A minute passed. An hour passed. A day passed. She persevered, standing stoic and strong with her head held high as she stared at the stars of her gods and ancestors in defiance.

There was no answer.
Not for a long time, at least.

"You show a strong drive," a sudden voice burst the silence by her ear, "You would wait for eternity."
Stars swirled menacingly, twisting and tangling into the shadowed shape of a mangled beast, heavy jaw hanging open and cracked horns curling around it's lion-like head.
"I can bring your daughter back. The other gods are selfish," he stepped around Levine with narrowed eyes and a slack smirk, "but I hear your pain. However, there must be a price to pay. There is always a price to pay for life."

The luminous lioness shook her head pleadingly, starry fur swishing softly. "Any price, I do not care what. She deserves a life she couldn't have, if you will help me than so shall it be that payment is made!"

"It shall be done. The payment will be made in full and the life given in full to you. I thank you for your patronage," the corners of his loose mouth raised into a sharp and vile grin before he distorted and dissipated into the shadowy starry fog he appeared in.

Glancing down, where once Belakane lay in her eternal youth and astral form; her old body with rich browns lay. She nuzzled into Levine's translucent paws and cried softly.
On top of her head, two small horns, and folded at her back, a set of wings akin to a bat or dragon.

The price.
