Prompt:

In a rural town sat an abandoned home.
This home used to be filled with love and laughter, but now sits empty aside from some forgotten possessions and furniture.
One of these such possessions was a stuffed plush, all worn and weathered from its many years of love and use, adorned with a bell collar and socks.
This plush sat alone on the bed of a child's, awaiting their improbable return.
Special toys are the one's most treasured and loved by children, and are given sentience because of this, but they cannot move on their own without the imagination of a child.
This plush wished every night on stars for the return of their owner or that of a new home where they would be loved, but many years had passed and the plush lost track of the years and forgot about such desires.

One winter night after not having wished in a long time, the stuffed plush made a new one on the brightest star they had ever seen in the night sky.
That night the window was blown open by the wind and it was snowing, a sight this plush saw for the first time on Christmas day when they were first embraced by a child and given life.
The wind carried a blue glitter into the room, and the sparkles turned into a fairy of blonde hair and dressed in blue.
She reached out her arm with wand in hand and glitters sparkled around the plush, allowing it to move and speak on it's own for the first time.
"Dear toy, it is Christmas time and I've come to give you a new home. A home with a loving child who will take ca-"
"Excuse me, but may I decline?"
    "What?"
"May I instead trade you my bell for me to be real?"
The plush held out it's bell to her.
    "My dear child..."
"I know that the world is dark and cruel at times, but I know it's also worth living for all the good in it. I'd rather spend my existence experiencing this world and making friends than to spend another moment as a lifeless puppet."
The fairy sighed and reached out to push the bell back into the plush's arms, but her eyes widened upon touching the bell. "This bell... it is filled with all of your wishes and sarrows... you've been here longer than I thought..." she stepped back and held her wand close to her chest
"I cannot except your bell, dear child..."
The plush lowered their gazed and tears weld up in their eyes.
"But I can except each and everyone of your wishes"
The fairy waved her wand and the bell jingled like a kagura suzu for every hundred wishes that came from the bell.
The magic swirled around the plush and it grew and transformed into a kalon, with its socks and bell growing with it.
The fairy placed her hand on the kalon's cheek.
    "Merry Christmas my dear"

Prompt: [499/500 words]

When You Hear Her Bell

______________________________________________________________________
That cursed bell chimed with her every movement, you'd think she'd be used to it by now, but it still bothers her. One step, ring~ ding~, then another, ring~ ding~, that same sound, over and over, it was beyond annoying, but she knows that there's no stopping now. It's not like she can take the bell off either, every time she tries she is punished with a pain that courses through her entire body, now she doesn't even try anymore.

She still remembers the day the bell was forced upon her, she was leaving the great city of Deranja, when someone in a hood came up behind her, put the dreadful thing around her neck, and then slunk off into some alley. Ever since then, the awful thing has rung in her ears, and no matter what she did, the bell continued to torture her.

It was near 6pm now, and it was starting to get dark. Libitina was hoping to reach her destination today, but she won't be able to once the sun is gone. She looked at her map and decided to take a short detour to a nearby village. Libitina found a lovely inn to sleep in after she strolled through the now abandoned village for a while.

The next morning, she set out on the same path she had traveled the day before, her bell still continually ringing. After a few more hours of walking she was able to see her destination just over the horizon, this sight made her break into a sprint. The great city Agreas, the most beautiful city in the country, and once she was done visiting, her mission would be through.

The Agrean guard heard Libitina's bell from miles away. Ring~ ding~ when the kalon's bell chimed, ring~ ding~ the cities death bell chimed as well. The guard began to quake, every city and village fell to her wrath. He knew that his beloved city would fall just the same. For the guards, Libitina's bell was a solem sound, but at least they were warned, unlike the previous cities. When the magician of Deranja used his last bit of strength to curse Libitina with the bell, the city hoped that it would give them a chance to prepare enough, since it was enchanted to have its sound travel over miles and miles.

Libitina finally got close to the cities gates, where for the first time she was met with a challenge. Perhaps this bell wasn't as much of a curse after all, because for once she got the chance to actually fight for her victory. However no challenge was too great for Libitina, the guards were taken down in an instant, and not long after, the city was as well.

The dead magician's bell is meant to serve as a warning, but no warning could save any city from Libitina. So if you hear it ringing near your town, prepare yourself, not for battle, but for death.

Name: Samael "Bluebird"
Prompt:
The soft chiming of a bell could be heard as Samael made her way up the stairs to the main building, fussing with it a little more.
There we go! There's the door.
She stepped inside the building, the chiming directing her neatly to the front desk.
"Hello, welcome to the Bird's Nest. Do you have an appointment?"
"Correct!" Samael smiled. "I have an interview. I'm Samael."
"Ah!" Wren thumbed through cards on her desk, picking up the phone. "Maxwell, you available?"
After a minute Wren motioned to the door for a moment.
"Ma'am?" She said.
"I can't see, my dear." She replied. Wren gave a noise, collecting herself.
"Ah, to the left! apologies." Samael nodded in response and made her way to the door, bell chiming all the way along.

"So, I hope you don't mind me asking this.." Maxwell asked, glancing up from his paperwork. "It's just protocol, and I'm a little curious. What's with the bell? Doesn't seem like it fits with the fact you applied here."
"Oh! No worries." Samael chirped, one paw gently moving to adjust the bell. "You see, I'm blind! I can't see. I use it to help me get around & the like."
Maxwell was caught by surprise, taking a moment or so to get his bearings. "Please elaborate?"
"The rings of the bell help me map my surroundings without having to actually see things! You know, akin to echolocation. Folks tend to judge less when it's a bell, instead of vocalizations." A smile. "I've had it for as long as I've been blind. It was a gift from an old friend, said it was made aeons ago and thought it to be cursed. I think it's blessed."
"I see.." Maxwell neatly stacked the paperwork, shifting it on the desk.
"I don't!" She laughed in response, clearly making a joke. "I promise to work to the best of my ability if I'm considered. Just because I'm blind doesn't mean I'm not capable!"
Maxwell cleared his throat. "I see, I see. Well, if I may ask, what do you specialize in? Since we reasonably can't assign you to sniper rifles.."
"Oh! Poisoning." Samael chirped, somewhat pleased with herself. "I'll have you know I'm quite well versed with the substance."
"You don't say..?" Maxwell held out his hand in offering. "Why don't we put that to the test?"

Username: SilentMelody | Name: Daybreak | Gender: genderfluid

Daybreak is a fairy that tends to wander from home and gets lost easily. The other fairies attached a bell to their collar so they could always find their way home. It's a magical bell that will direct Daybreak in the right way when they flick the bell three times.

    ---

They woke up as the sun was rising, excited for a new day. "Time to explore!" they chirped and rushed out of their leafy home in the large forest. With their size, Daybreak had a lot of exploring to do.

Bounding through the tall grass, they tried to find the place they left off the other day. It took a few hours, but they found the meadow and stopped to catch their breath under the shade of a flower. Daybreak leaned against the stem and sipped a dewdrop on a blade of grass. Refreshed, they sighed and glanced around again.

It was hard to see over the grass, so Daybreak began climbing the flower. Gripping the stem, they managed to make their way up and hang on to one of the petals. Swinging their legs, they leaped onto the middle of the flower and stood taller than they ever felt. Grinning and puffing out their chest, Daybreak gazed at the glory of the meadow. They felt like they were towering over everything.

"I can see anything! What are those humongous rocks?" Daybreak wondered aloud and stared at the horizon. Could those be the "mountains" their grandmother always told them about?

They gently tore off one of the petals and jumped off of the flower, the wind picking them up. Daybreak squealed with delight as their feet touched other flowers and helped them continue their flight across the meadow. Eventually, they made it to a rock that seemed like a mountain to them. Daybreak liked to pretend that they could climb the real mountains, but no fairy could survive that. Their grandmother had heard stories from humans that it was freezing cold.

Suddenly, Daybreak realized that the sun was beginning to set behind the mountains. They shivered and clutched their arms around their chest. "Bell, take me home," they murmured and reached up to their neck... but their collar wasn't on.

"Oh no! I forgot my Bell," they whimpered. Their hand fell limp against their chest. Daybreak settled down on the top of the rock and hugged their knees to the chest. "What do I do now? Bell is supposed to take me home," they murmured softly. Their eyelids fluttering, they watched the sun sinking lower and lower.

As a last resort, they began to whisper. "Bell. Bell. Bell."

Three times was the charm, as usual. In the distance, a gentle tinkling began and sped up. "Bell is coming!" Daybreak exclaimed and turned around. Here was the light blue, leather collar. The huge Bell was dragging it behind in the wind. Soon enough, Bell had made it into Daybreak's hands and the fairy gave a sigh of relief. "I'm so sorry I left you. It won't happen again," they promised and wrapped the collar around their neck. Fastening it, they flicked the bell three times.

Bell perked up and tugged gently at their neck, leading them home.

Name: Chio

Prompt:

“If you don’t get in you come right home, you understand me?” Chio’s mom held his face between her paws, forehead on his. Chio smiled.
“Yes momma.” It had been three weeks since auditions had opened at the largest entertainment agency in Kalonea, and Chio had finally received a letter confirming his slot. He had packed as quickly as possible and his flight was in an hour.
“You remember our promise?” His little sister, Serena, spoke up. She was still just a kit, small and fluffy. She ran up to Chio and hugged his legs. He patted her head.
“Of course.” He reached into his bag and pulled out the collar. The oversized brass bell tinkled. “I’ll wear it every day, until I come back to perform right here!” Serena jumped.
“Yay! I know you’ll do great big brother. You’re the best at singing.” Chio looked at his little family, two Kalons who loved him no matter what. He began to tear up, and took a deep breath.
“Okay. I have to go now.” He looked down at his sister. “Serena, you be a good girl and watch over momma. Can you do that?” Serena made a determined face.
“You can count on me!” Chio chuckled.
“I feel safer already.” Their mom said. She was crying a little.
“Mom. I’ll miss you a lot. You’ve always been so good to me.” Chio told her. She nodded.
“I knew someday you would leave me. That’s what it is to be a mother. But you can always come home. Don’t forget that.” They hugged, and Serena joined in. Finally, Chio had to go. He extricated himself from his family’s embrace and got in the taxi that had now been a waiting a few minutes. The driver looked at him in the rearview mirror.
“You took your time. Where to?”
“East airport.” Chio waved to his mom and sister as the car pulled away. I’ll make you proud.

Extra:

“Hey Chi, why do you always wear that noisy thing?” It was midafternoon, and Chio’s trainee group was starting dance practice. Chio was in the midst of warming up, his bell jingling with his every move. The Kal who had asked, a taller fellow with dark blue fur, stood over him with a frown. Chio didn’t look his way.
“I made a promise with my sister. I have to wear it until I perform in my hometown.” The blue Kalon laughed.
“It’ll be a real shame when you can’t keep that promise.” He said. Chio frowned.
“Hey.” It was another voice, from across the room. “Team B’s practice time is over, Silas. Get going.” Silas held his paws up.
“Alright, alright. But the cream puff shouldn’t get his hopes up.” He walked away. Chio sighed.
“I could have handled him.” He said to the Kalon who had spoken up, a pink-furred one with a short mane.
“Yeah, okay, if you say so.” He sat on the floor next to Chio.
“Karter!” He punched him lightly in the arm. They laughed. Ever since arriving in Kalonea a year ago, Chio had spent nearly every day working harder than he ever had before. Learning Kalonese had been tough enough, having grown up in a human country speaking English, but adapting to the different culture was enough to make him want to go running back home. Karter, a native Kalonean fluent in English, had been a godsend for Chio those first difficult months. His help had saved Chio’s tail everywhere, from conference rooms to dance classes.
“For the record, I like your bell.” The pink Kalon said. Chio tapped the metal sphere gently.
“Thanks.”
“It’s good for making sure you don’t wander off.” Karter’s smile was sassy.
“Why, you-” Chio jumped him, aiming for a tickle attack.
“Uh, what’s going on guys? Or do I want to know?” Someone had entered the room.
“Lewis! We were just, warming up?” The older Kalon had cool grey fur and a cooler expression. He waved a paw dismissively.
“I brought the others.” From behind him came the remaining two trainees on their team: Bandit, and Dewey. Bandit was the oldest and as usual seemed like his mind was elsewhere. Dewey’s eyes raced around erratically, nervous as he always was when dance practice came around. The young Kals spread out through the room and allowed Karter to lead them in some stretches. Chio was the youngest of the five, too old for Team A but still a little young for Team C. He had never had brothers, but he imagined this was what having older brothers would be like. Sure, learning to be an idol was hard, but Chio didn’t mind, as long as he got to chase his dream with good friends like these by his side.

Username: EQUIVALENCE
Name: Minuet
Prompt:
She forgets how long it’s been. How long she’s been tied to the bell. How long since she’s been given this curse. Forgotten the number of centuries that have passed.

She’s lost all her friends and family. Their lives taken by time.

For over an eon she’s been forced to follow the bell’s wishes. Follow it’s every command. Going in every direction it points. Day after day. Hour after hour. Minute after minute. She’s been forced to be the carrier of the bell.

Treaded through blizzard, swamp, dust, and storm. Bringing the bell to the place the bell is most needed. To where the bell is called to. Where the most tears are shed. To where the most pain is experienced. To help those who need help.

--

When she was a child, the bell was the most magical thing to exist. Her mother told her stories of all the things the bell has done. Tales of desperate times in which the bell has appeared in a time of need. She was fascinated by the things it could do.

It wasn’t until she was older that she learned about Bell Bearers. A being that carries the bell to the places it is needed. She was immediately hooked. She HAD to find a way to become the bearer of the bell.

And that was the biggest mistake she’s ever made.

--

The process of becoming the bearer is a long and painful journey. First, you have to request an audience with the Bell and its current bearer. Which can take from a day to 100 years to actually happen. Then the bell has to actually accept you as a possible bearer, which has like a 15% chance of happening. Then you must, if you accept, follow the bearer for a year. Experiencing the way and life of a Bell Bearer. After that time has passed the bell will decide if you are worthy of carrying its presence. And even then it can say no and turn you away.

Minuet had no problem with this process. She was willing to do anything to carry the bell.

She actually managed to get an audience with the bell and bearer after about a year and passed the first judgment. She went through the year’s journey with ease, enjoying every moment. And through some streak of luck, passed the second judgment.

She couldn’t be more ecstatic. She was going to be the Bearer of the bell.

All that needed to happen was to be soulbound to the bell. Passing the duty form the past bearer to her. She barely remembers the transfer happening, cause she was so thrilled. And soon enough she was the official Bearer of the Bell. Soulbound and all.

It was far too late by the time Minuet realized.

That being soul bound to the bell meant living as long as bell needed you.
