Bear stood speechless, a giant bouquet of roses stuffed into their arms. Standing dumbstruck for some time they finally managed to lift their head, only the bouquet was so big only their eyes could be seen between the petals. Gaining the courage, Bear spoke out trying to keep the scariest face possible, “Thank you…. Did…did.. didn’t have to,” their voice slowly dropped off a red blush appearing across their face. Looking down once more only the small tufts of hair could be seen above the bouquet. Seemingly dejected by their attempt at speech the tufts looked deflated and sad. The other reached out patting the small tufts of hair in encouragement. This made Bear act like a cat, it’s fur all puffed out in anger, trying to be scary.

This was seemingly the boost they needed. Twisting their feet slightly they toddled forward, until they stood directly in front of the other. Reaching into their pocket they whipped out a small deflated daisy, it’s roots still intact. Small clumps of dirt dangled from the roots, however the soil was still wet, obviously it had been plucked not too long ago. Holding it out in front of them in a serious manner, Bear whispered it a small voice, “I got you a flower too, I even dug it out of the ground myself.” Seemingly this sentence used up all the courage they had, they shoved it in their hand, blush still prominent on their face as they rushed away in a flurry. Bears head never once looking towards the other, one would think they had been bullied somehow.

The curtains closed on the final bows as the audience rose from their seats. Ren knew that this was their cue. Dashing around the side of the stage they quickly made their way backstage, bee lining to another Kal taking off her makeup. It was none other than Ren’s best friend. There were many quick exchanges, all so loud that what was actually being said was unclear.
“Omigawd you were so amazing”
“Did you see the part where I”
“I was so terrified that I”
“I knew you’d do amazing you always do”
“Anyway I brought you this to celebrate another amazing production” Ren said as they shoved a bouquet into her hands. To their surprise she took out a single rose and gave it back.
“Ya know I got that for you”
“Shut up, lemme monologue, I’m trying to be deep”
“So you know how we met in high school, I was terrified. When I was in elementary school I got bullied a lot. I moved schools a couple times, I made some friends, but none that close. We would see each other during the day, but it’s not like I was invited to sleepovers or anything. I spent all of eighth grade telling myself “I don’t make friends.” I thought I was gonna be that one weird person no one was friends with.

And then, at freshman orientation you sat next to me, and I was so scared that you would tell me to move so your friends could sit. But you thought I looked cool. You stood by me through everything, and you showed me how valuable and amazing I really am. Something I never though I would realize. I gave you the rose because without you, I would never have thought I had a chance to make ensemble, much less be the leading heart throb.”

“Wow”, said Ren.
“I always heard in the seminars about how one little act of kindness can change someone’s life, but I never realized it was true. Ya know on the first day I didn’t talk to you out of pity, I thought you were really cool and way outta my league. You’ve thought me so much about how to help people and how to help the world.”

“I guess we both helped each other. Life goes better when you go through it with someone by Your side. Just because you feel like you need someone to help you doesn’t mean you can’t carry others”

“Now enough being sweet” Ren quipped “Lets go find the snacks they left for the cast.”
