Buttermilk #858

Postby certified » Wed Jun 10, 2020 1:26 pm

Happy to have finally have risen from the dead. cx

Anyhow, I was uh, looking at monarch butterflies when I made this. But, It's not related lol.

To get this unusual kid, tell me who her unusual companion would be and why! Minimum of at least 100 words. No max, but don't go too far overboard. c:

name: Monarch
collar color: Artist Choice
prompt: Monarch flopped down and huffed, they hay in front of her being whisked away. She looked around her stall, it was lonely in all honesty. Being new to the farm meant she had no friends, just herself. She sat up slightly taking in more of the space she now seemed to own. As her eyes moved about she noticed a little hole in the wooden frame. Maybe there was something in it? She got up and walked over the the hole, sitting back on her hunches. if she waited long enough maybe something would come out. Forever seemed to pass by until her head snapped down towards the hole when a little mouse poked its head out. It squeaked. Monarch wasnt frighten, more intrigued. The little thing sniffed the ground and approached her. A small thing like it should be afraid of her right? WRONG, in fact it seemed to take and interest in her because as she sat there it curled up near her leg and closed its eyes. Monarch was shocked! Was this the first friend she had made!? because if so she loved the little guy already. She smiled and laid down, careful not to hurt the little thing. As she dozed off she couldnt help but continue to smile. She had been befriended.

name: Emberella
collar color: To match eyes!
prompt: "Ew, you can't play with us!" Emberella was taken aback by her older step sister's harsh tone.
"Yeah, why don't you go play with the birds and bugs?" her other step sister mocked.
"I-" Ember started, but her older step sister cut her off again.
"Don't talk to us!"
"Just leave already, or we're going to tell our mother that you're not doing your chores!"
Before they could say another word, Ember turned and raced towards her father's shed with tears streaming down her face. They never even gave her a chance, but they never do, really...
Ember burst into her father's shed and slammed the door behind herself, wishing he was there to hold her and tell her it would all be alright. Instead, she had to resort to crawling into her place of comfort, the fireplace. Jamming into the sooty nook used to be a punishment, but now it was her escape.
This time, though, something was different. Somewhere in the dark space above her, something was breathing. Despite her sobbing, Ember's breath caught in her throat and her tears hesitated in her eyes. Could it be that someone else found also peace in this unlikely place? And what kind of animal would choose a place like this? All of her questions were answered when the head of a small black figure appeared in the only sliver of light from above. Beady eyes, blunt snout, huge ears... Ember instantly recognized the animal, even before it clicked at her in surprise. A bat!
Even more shocking to Ember, though, was what the bat asked her: "Did they send you to find me?"
Her tears all but forgotten, Ember sputtered out a startled, "Who?"
"The bullies! They always pick on me, and there's only so many places to hide!" the little bat hissed, still suspicious.
"No, of course not! I'm escaping, too!"
"Really? But you're so big, you could just trample them!"
"No, silly, I'm hiding from bigger cows, my step sisters. They're the worst!" Tears brimmed in her eyes once again.
"I understand. For some reason everyone always decides to pick on me... they never give me a chance," the bat confessed sadly.
"Really!? That's how they treat me, too! They call me ugly and dumb, and make fun of me for being friends with other animals." Silence filled the fireplace once again as they both reflected. Suddenly, an idea came to Ember. "Do... do you think you could help me?"
"I don't know..." the bat hesitated. "I'm just a little bat!"
"That's the best part! You can help me scare my step sisters, and I can protect you from the bullies!"
"You would do that for me?" the bat exclaimed, surprised.
"Of course! Come on, I know somewhere better where we can think of a plan!"
As the two crawled out of the cavity, the bat paused to add, "Oh, by the way, my name's Click. What's yours? I get the feeling that we're going to be seeing a lot of each other in the future,"
And that little bat couldn't have been more right. The two unlikely friends bonded over their similar situations, and from that day forward, they were inseparable and always there for each other when times got rough.

    name: Pyre

    prompt:
For her entire life, Pyre has been able to see spirits. She'd say ghosts but, well, lesson one of being able to see spirits is that not all of them are literal ghosts. Some are demons or ghouls or fairies or any number of names that any number of people would know. It's weird, she knows this, but it's been a part of her family's life for generations. A medium every other generation was the general rule of thumb and Pyre fell into that without exception. And, as soon as she became of age, like her grandmother before her and her father before her and so on, she made a contract with a spirit.

Oberon was, technically speaking, a fairy - although he's never really looked like your traditional one. He looks a bit like he's made of wood - all rough bark and hairless - and lacks any wings whatsoever. He doesn't need them to fly, after all, and thinks such glamours are a waste of his time. He's gruff and ancient and really just a big pain in her rear. Pyre was so disappointed in her companion - especially compared to the elegant and gentle fox who had bound themselves to her grandmother. They clashed a lot at first and, for a time, her grandmother was concerned that something had gone wrong in the binding ceremony that was supposed to match someone with their ideal guide to the world of spirits. But, over time, she's realized he has his own sort of beauty and that his gruffness is just a cover over a truly good heart. He's saved her life countless times (all for the sake of the contract if you ask him but she knows better.) Pyre is grateful to him and he is increasingly fond of her, even if their relationship is near constant bickering. They're family now, contract or not.

prompt:
”....well aren’t you...special.” Vixen chuckled lightly as she looked at the avian perched on the tree.

The bird observed her closely, ever so subtly tilting its head. It was dusk and the bird had just woken up. It was definitely an unusual sight. It flew down and landed on Vixen’s rump. Both stared at the other in silence before the bird started catching flies that flew around Vixen. It’s owlish eyes looked around, swiftly catching whatever was within its reach. After it caught all the flies it could, the bird landed on the ground and caught a grasshopper that was about to take flight. Vixen stared in awe at the insectivore. Nature surely has some weird creatures. The bird flew back up and landed on the tree before making a hilarious yet haunting call.

β€œOkay...well...I think I’m done for today.” Vixen said.

Since then, it has been a daily routine for the two of them. Vixen would be out in the pasture and the bird would constantly linger around her, even occasionally grooming her. It definitely wasn’t a companion that Vixen wanted but she was glad she knew it.

It was truly a bird that stood out amongst many others. To describe its appearance, it looks like an abandoned and incomplete muppet. It is Pots the Potoo bird.

prompt:
The sun hadn't quite risen yet, but it's rays had barely begun to peek out over the trees and cast dim shadows over the ground. Elliot tip toed out of her bedroom and down the stairs. She made her way through the house, as stealthy as a cat, and into the kitchen where she grabbed an apple and a handful of mixed berries which she shoved into her satchel before inching open the back door and slipping out. Once she was free of the house and the need to silently walk, she broke into a steady jog heading straight into the woods nearby, following a path that was unseen but her feet knew where to take her. A little ways into the woods Elliot slowed to a walk, taking in the morning air and the sound of birds just beginning to wake up. Just up ahead, a group of boulders sat lying over one another. At the top there was a rock that was almost completely flat and level, and the pattern of rocks below it created a perfect stairway to get to it. At the bottom, the opening to a little den was shadowed by the rocks over hanging it.
Elliot climbed her way to the top of the rocks and sat on the flat rock. Out of her satchel she pulled a small blanket which she laid out in front of her, placing the berries she had taken from the kitchen onto it. She let out a whistle that closely resembled a song bird, and waited. Out of the cool den below, a slender red fox emerged, bounding her way up the stairway of rocks and onto the same rock as Elliot. Behind her, three little baby foxes tumbled out and much less gracefully made their way up the steps. Once they reached the top the babies were overjoyed to see Elliot, yipping excitedly as they fought over a place on her lap. She pet them each in turn, feeding them little bits of berry while their mother sat on the blanket, looking pleased. Elliot held out a particularly nice looking raspberry for the mother. "Come here Marlo, here's some breakfast." Marlo trotted over and yipped as she took the berry and ate it. The babies, Jack, Kinslo and Benny crowded in and searched the satchel for toys and treats. Upon finding a tiny tennis ball, they were overjoyed and tossed it back and forth among themselves, while Marlo came and sat in Elliots lap to be pet and watch the babies play.

After a few hours, the sun was up and Elliot could hear Eleanor calling for her. She packed up the blanket, and gave each fox a pat on the head. "I'll be back tomorrow," she said, before taking off on a jog home.

The calico cat peered around the barn edge. The hollow eyes stared blankly. She ran low to the ground and ducked under the shed. Anyone would have been curious. The black sockets where her eyes had been looked scared and were oozing. We took the poor baby inside and realized that she was pregnant. We got her a bed and gave her food. She was skinny and old. She died while giving birth. She had two kittens. Both were fully functional and we raised them by hand. One had the calico coat of her mother and the other one had a red tabby coat, probably like her dad. When they reached adulthood, we stopped feeding them by hand and they had to hunt in the barn and the field. Boof, the tabby, left quickly. Surprisingly, Vixen and Glitch became good friends. Glitch was the calico kitty. Glitch would ride between Vixen's shoulder blades and loved to sit there. Glitch also kept the barn pest free.
We're a system. We will most often sign off with who's fronting.

name: Ophelia
collar color: your choice
prompt: Opheliaβ€˜s unusual companion for sure would be a little snail. She has always adored snails and found them fascinating. They were one of the few animals that just carried their houses with them. Since Ophelia is definitely a huge introvert, she would love to be a snail herself, so a snail as her best friend would be just perfect. Just carrying their own little home around and just going inside whenever the world was too much to handle for them at the moment. She finds snails one of the most peaceful animals on earth. Not being rushed by everyone else and just doing their stuff in their own time and at their own pace. She always found it way easier to do stuff when she wasn’t rushed to do something, so a friend who viewed the world the same would be perfect. Just a cute little garden snail with a brown swirly house where she’d paint on too. And her little companionships would have the name Basil. Basil and Ophelia would spend their time sitting under a shady tree somewhere and just doing nothing. And the world would be perfectly fine for her.
The two met when Athena was mad again when checking her garden and finding him in it. Ophelia actually wanted to spend her day reading a book, but Athena was yelling at the snail so much that she just had enough. She just wanted her peace and quiet so she just picked Basil up and took him with her. And they immediately got along perfectly fine.
