Dyami's birth tribe were firm believers in the power of totems. This belief was so extreme in their tribe that upon birth the kits remained nameless until the first full moon after their birth. On this full moon the kit was brought to the elders of the tribe where a ceremony was held to find the young kit's totem. Legend has it that the kit's totem would reveal itself on the night of the ceremony. Each kit was given a necklace with their totem engraved on it upon discovering their totem. The necklace was put in place to remind the kit that their totem is always with them to guide them in times of hardship.
Dyami's totem was revealed to be the eagle, and not just any eagle but the harpy eagle. The eagle was one of the rarest and most sought after totems within the tribe because it is said to represent strength, intuition, courage, hope, resilience, and vision. Upon the revelation of his totem his parents decided to name him Dyami or eagle to honor such a strong and powerful totem.
It seemed like the odds were stacked against him from the get go within his tribe. Dyami, the son of two novice primals was born with an alpha jewel which was unheard of. To make matters worse he was blessed with such a powerful totem. The tribe's ruling alpha was a strong and ruthless ruler who had come in as an outsider and taken power by force. He had a son born only month's before Dyami. But to the alpha's chagrin his son was born with only a warrior jewel and given the totem of the hare. The alpha hated Dyami for being everything his son wasn't and wasn't shy about expressing those feelings. Dyami's parents feared for their kit's life if they remained within the tribe. There was no way the alpha would allow a potential challenger to remain within his tribe. So one night his parents prepared to flee unfortunately the alpha got wind of their escape plan and lead a party to head them off. Dyami's father stayed behind to challenge the alpha himself so Dyami and his mother could escape. That was the last time Dyami ever saw him.
Against all odds Dyami and his mother were able to escape to safety. The two primals lived as rogues through Dyami's kit years. Luckily for Dyami his mother had been a skilled hunter and warrior, she taught him everything she knew to prepare him for the world of the primals. Eventually the day came when Dyami's mother passed on into the spirit realm. For the first time in a long time Dyami felt utterly alone and completely lost in the world. It was then that he called upon his totem for guidance. For most of his life he had resented the totem believing it to be responsible for all the bad things that had happened in his life. If his totem was so special why had it seemed like more of a burden than a blessing for most of his life? If it was so powerful why hadn't it done something to protect his father all those years ago?
As expected no answer came from the totem, the stupid thing remained as silent as ever. Frustrated Dyami tore off the totem necklace and threw it into a creek. For many weeks the primal continued on as normal taking things day by day. One fateful day however he accidentally wandered into another tribe's territory. Outnumbered Dyami was quickly overwhelmed by the combined might of the other primals. The tribe made quick work of the alpha and left him for dead as they tossed him out of their territory.
It was only when he was teetering on the brink of death through blurry vision that Dyami saw it for the first time sitting in the treetops staring down at him feather crest raised, the harpy eagle. Over the next few days the eagle watched over him and brought him food and water as he healed. When he was finally healed the eagle still stayed, it was almost as if it wanted him to follow it. Eventually Dyami caved and followed the eagle to wherever it had in mind. As the primal followed the massive eagle glided from tree to tree overhead. Their journey lasted for weeks before Dyami finally reached the eagle's destination. A tribe. Not just any tribe but his tribe.
The old alpha the one who had killed his father was still there, still ruling. This was why the eagle had lead him here, this was his destiny. Dyami challenged the alpha for the right to rule the tribe. A brutal battle ensued but Dyami was victorious. The old alpha's life was spared and he and his son fled the tribe. Dyami took his rightful place as alpha and a time of peace fell upon the tribe.
It was only after his journey to becoming alpha that Dyami gained a newfound respect and favoritism for the harpy eagle. Only then did he realize how much he and the bird resembled one another. Much like Dyami the eagle has sensitive hearing that can only be achieved by its facial disks. The eagle is able to raise and lower a crown of feathers on its head to create displays of power similar to the horns on Dyami's head. The eagle is strong and powerful making it an impressive hunter much like Dyami. Much like Dyami the eagle's parents will remain with it to teach and protect it as it grows.
