I had just been grooming River when we got a call. Apparently someone's foal had broken out and gone missing. We scrambled a search party immediately and set out. After a few hours of searching however, we began to lose hope. The sun was setting and there had been no sign of the foal. Just as we were beginning to debate heading back until the next morning, someone shouted through the walkie talkie. They had spotted the foal. It was safe and sound, curled up asleep against a wild mare. We were all surprised and quickly headed over to the location Sure enough there was the missing foal, soundly asleep and being groomed gently by a pearlino mare. Now we had to figure out how to get the foal away and home. The mare was watching us carefully, her body language protective but not aggressive. I tried calling her and the foal over, offering my hands out with sugar cubes. The mare seemed to hesitate but at the sight of the treats began to slowly approach, the little foal following. Soon both were enjoying their treats. While distracted, someone placed a lead carefully around the foal, who hardly noticed. Looking at the mare, I gently stroked her nose. She glanced up at me and our eyes met for a second. I made a decision, I would adopt this wild mare. I carefully and slowly put a lead on her as well. She seemed hesitant but with a few more sugar cubes and gentle words, let me put it on her and lead her to the loading truck. From there it was smooth sailing getting her home and settled in the stables. I decided to name her Pearl after her beautiful coat and pure heart.

It was the morning after I had adopted Pearl and I went to visit her. I made sure to bring more of those sugar cubes she seemed to love. The mare raised her head as I approached her stall. She seemed completely at ease in my presence. I figured she had already determined that I wasn't a threat. I held out my palm with a sugar cube that she started to eat without hesitation. As she was eating, I slowly put my other hand on her nose, making sure that she saw me the entire approach. Just as my hand was about to touch her, she eliminated the distance herself and pressed her nose into my hand. I smiled and gently stroked her face. She seemed to enjoy it, but not as much as the sugar cubes. I spent the rest of the morning petting her and telling her about her new home. She listened with ears perked the entire time.

The next day I visited Pearl again. I brought her another sugar cube as a greeting which she happily took. After petting her nose and ears for a little and telling her about my day, I opened her stall and stepped in. She seemed mildly surprised but not anxious. Taking that as a good sign, I grabbed a brush and slowly approached her. Pearl watched closely but did not startle. Finally I reached out and gently started to groom her. She seemed to be pleased and leaned into me slightly. I chuckled slightly and continued to groom her for the next hour or so. She wasn't dirty, I just wanted to get her used to me. And she seemed to like listening to me talk about just about anything.

Today had been a rough day. The classic day where everything seemed be going wrong. I was exhausted as I headed over to see Pearl. She perked up when she saw me and gave a slight whinny. She sounded concerned. I approached her stall and got in. She instantly started nuzzling me gently. I thanked her with a chuckle and started to stroke her nose. I gave her a sugar cube as I continued to pet and groom her. The entire time she kept trying to nuzzle me. It was incredibly sweet and helped to lift my spirits. I started to just tell her everything. She listened closely and I could have sworn she understood some of what I was saying. It really helped and I rewarded her kindness with another sugar cube before I left for the night.

Today I was planning to start Pearl's halter training. I wasn't too worried but I wondered how she would react. I had bought her a soft brown leather halter that I hoped would be comfortable. I grabbed a pocketful of sugar cubes and headed to the stables. Pearl gave a soft whinny when she saw me and I spent some time petting her nose and scratching her ears, which she loved. I then brought out the halter and held it out to her. She sniffed it for a second and then looked at me questioningly. I gave her a sugar cube and repeated the process. Once she was comfortable I put the halter against her nose. Pearl let me and barely reacted. She had already decided that the halter wasn't a scary thing. I praised her and gave her another sugar cube and some more ear scratches before deciding we were done for the day.

This morning I went to visit Pearl. She greeted me with a gentle nuzzle and I gave her some nose and ear scratches while telling her about my day. I then brought out the halter again and she didn't even react. I fed her a sugar cube and then slowly and gently began to put the halter on her. She watched me closely but did not startle. Once the halter was on, I praised her before fully tightening and securing it. Her ear twitched and she seemed to take a moment to get used to the sensation but she remained relaxed. I gave her another sugar cube and returned to simply petting her and talking quietly. Pearl hardly seemed to even care that the halter was on much to my relief. After a bit of time I took off the halter and left to start my work, not before praising her one las time.
