- john gault received a patent for encasing stamps for use as currency on august 12, 1862
- corners of stamp were folded around a small circle of cardboard and then coated in a thin transparent layer of mica and then an outer metal frame held the pieces together completed by a heaver brass backing
- 1, 3, 5, 10, 12, 24, 30, and 90-cent pieces
- gault ended on august 21 1862 when the government issued postage currency in 5, 10, 25, and 50-cent pieces
- of the 750k pieces sold, only 3-7k are known to have survived
