The Inverted Dendermonde, which showcases the town hall upside down, was issued in 1920 and is Belgium’s greatest contribution to printing errors.

Two sheets of the first run had its centre inverted so that the depicted town hall is upside down. Most likely the cause of this error was similar to the one of the Inverted Jenny, since the Belgian stamp also has two colours. The first sheet was partially sold in the Post Office of Ghent. After this discovery was made, the management of the Belgian Post went to Enschedé to find out if there were more. A second sheet was discovered, transported to Brussels and destroyed.

One pane of the second run was also inverted. 50 copies of these were discovered in January 1921 in Leuven. They were confiscated by the Post Office before they could be sold to the general public. The remaining 50 were still in the Netherlands and were cut, this being witnessed by Dutch and Belgian officials. The 50 already in Belgium were destroyed by burning them on 21 January 1921.

Only 17 are known to still exist. It is rumoured that two of these stamps were lost when a famous stamp collector was murdered in 1942. It's estimated at €75,000.

their favorite stamp: the ptsd awareness stamp! seph loves this stamp because, like many keldines, she has ptsd! her ptsd stems from abandonment and abuse from her mother, and she loves that theres a stamp for kels like her because she collects them (like me ahaha)! this stamp came out on 12/2/19 and proceeds go towards ptsd societies and helping people overcome and conquer their ptsd. seph thinks this is a wonderful idea, and hopes to someday help others like herself!

- originated in america during the civil war
- people began hoarding coins after predicting future hard times
- us mint couldn’t keep up with demand
- some places began using stamps as a small form of currency
- government approved monetization of stamps in july 1862
- john gault received a patent for encasing stamps for use as currency on august 12, 1862
- corners of stamp were folded around a small circle of cardboard and then coated in a thin transparent layer of mica and then an outer metal frame held the pieces together completed by a heaver brass backing
- 1, 3, 5, 10, 12, 24, 30, and 90-cent pieces
- gault ended on august 21 1862 when the government issued postage currency in 5, 10, 25, and 50-cent pieces
- of the 750k pieces sold, only 3-7k are known to have survived
