Adoption day:
I recently heard of the striders and was imideatly fascinated- i figured my ranch had more than enough space to house at least a few of them. I went to the adoption center and got there at night, but luckily i was let in anyways. I strolled trough the paddocks- each strider was fascinating and new, each of them beautiful. But a blue roan mare in particular caught my eye. Lit by the moonlight, she was regally standing in her paddock, but when i turned for a moment she had shedded her regal side and playfully roamed around. It was a no brainer. I just knew her name, it had to be Lunar. Loading went, well, interesing. She once again just stood there, head held high, unbothered by my and the staffs attempts to bribe her to load. But then i had an idea! I went and got a toy to which she responded way better. At first she tried to act as if she didnt notice, but soon enough she went after it and into the trailer. Finally, we were on our way to her new home.

First time bonding
Once on the ranch, Lunar settled in quickly. However, she wasnt to keen on making contact with me or any of the farm hands. She knew the feeding times and would always wait for someone to come and bring her food, but never start eating as long as she felt observed still. Eventually, i decided to try a different tactic. I sat in her pasture for every free minute i had, allowing her to get used to my presence more. And i remembered her apparent love for toys that shed shown when we picked her up. Everyday id bring with me a different ball or puzzles that were filled with treats. She did her best to not acknowledge them, but eventually caved in. Shed then pick them up from where i threw them and carried her loot away to play with it in a quiet corner. I could hear treats rattle and balls bounce from the distance. One day, a lost ball rolled towards me. Ahed just given it a bit too much spin. Lunar reappeared from her corner and eyed the ball longingly. She seemed to feel too proud to run over and snag it away, so instead she resorted to a sad stare. I chuckled and threw the ball in a high curve back to her. She didnt reacht and let it bounce high instead of catching it. And just that bounce suddenly seemed to fill her with massive glee. She bounced it a few times herself before taking off again. A first step was made.

Second time bonding
I called out the Striders name and watched her flick her ears in consideration. Every time she would do this when i call, and shed never come. I of course hoped this would change as things moved forward. But for the moment, she still kept a respectful distance. One which got smaller day by day.
I called again, this time throwing a toy her way. She gracefully accepted the offering and took it to her shed for safekeeping. A few moments later Lunar emerged again and came trotting towards me. Once a few arms out of my reach, she stopped and arched her neck. With each breath she sucked in the air, trying to find out if i was carrying any treats for her. Which of course, i did. She wouldnt take one from my hand, so i threw them directly at her feet. And with each throw a bit closer to me, until she noticed my plan and took her distance up again. Although this realization couldnt keep her from repeating the same pattern over and over again. Each time, each day, she got a bit more comfortable with me being close.

Third time bonding
I stood at the enclosures gate, carrying a brand new ball toy and halter. Lunars old ball lay in a corner, battered and sadly deflated. I never saw her go full on out playing but the toys state gave her away. Strangely some toys had up and vanished. Lunar had to have hidden them somewhere, but i couldnt figure out where.
The items in hand, i walked inside and called out for her. There was rustling and rummaging in her shed and she staggered out a few moments later.
"Oh someones tired, i didnt mean to wake you girl!"
After hearing my voice she caught herself pretty quickly, returning to her usual regal self. I offered her a treat and she gracefully accepted. She nipped at the ball in my hand, trying to dislodge it from my grasp. I took up the halter to divert her attention and let her investigate it. Lunar sniffed it quickly before deeming the thing quite boring and returning to the ball.
I then placed the halter over the ball. If she wanted her toy, shed have to at least touch that halter, maybe even stick her nose trough it.
And after a bit of hesitation, she did just that. I gave her some time and passed her another treat before finally pulling the halter on. I left it loose, if she was to panic a simple shake of the head would rid her of it.
She scoffed at the new sensation but stayed calm. I sighed a breath of relief, praised her and quickly slipped it back off. That was enough for today. To her joy, i dropped the ball and left her to it.
