It was nearly midnight when I heard a loud crash coming from the stables. Quickly throwing on some shoes and grabbing a flashlight, I headed out to see what was going on. As I got closer I noticed the door was open and the latch broken. Concerned, I quietly made my way in. Both Pearl and River were awake and eying the adjacent storage room door. I narrowed my eyes, growing worried we had a thief. But I didn't see any footprints beyond the normal hoofprints. I slowly made my way to the storage room and glanced in. It took a few seconds for my brain to process what I was seeing. A pure black wild mare had broken in. She was going through the toy bin with her muzzle. As I watched, she chose a small rubber ball and picked it up. When her head raised, her eyes met mine. We both froze. After a second the mare slowly put the ball back as if nothing had happened. At this point I had a hard time not laughing. I carefully approached with my hands outstretched to show I was no threat. The mare eyed me but let me come closer. I gently picked up the ball and held it out to her, which she eagerly took. At that point I couldn't help but adopt her. I walked over to an empty stall and tried to coax her over. It took a bit of time and coaxing but eventually she was peacefully settled. I decided to call the dark visitor Cor. After the black mischievous corvid she reminded me of.

It was the morning after Cor's visit and adoption. I headed to the stables to check in on her. She was awake and watched me approach. She seemed relaxed. She still had her stolen ball with her in her stall and it was obvious she'd been playing with it. I greeted her and held out my first offering for her. It was a sugar cube. She sniffed it for a second before eating it. Cor seemed to like it but not love it. So I took out my second offering, a piece of bison jerky. Again she sniffed it curiously before eagerly eating it. She seemed to enjoy it more then the sugar cube. I took out my final offering, a carrot. She once again inspected it before taking a bite. Again she seemed to not dislike it, but not love it. So she preferred meaty treats, good to know. I gave her another piece of jerky and offered my hand for her to sniff after. When she didn't seem stressed, I slowly reached out to stroke her nose. Cor was surprised at first but did not startle. She eyed me curiously as I began to pet her. After a moment she relaxed and seemed to enjoy my attention. I gave her a few more head scratches before leaving to start my chores for the day.

Today I went to visit Cor again. She was playing with her ball when I approached. As I got closer, she tossed her head and threw the ball at me. At first I thought it was an accident, but her body language was too playful. Raising an eyebrow I picked up the ball and gently tossed it back to her. Cor caught it and with a toss of her head, sent it right back to me. I managed to catch it this time and she whinnied happily. The two of us played catch like this for the next 15 or so minutes before I finally stopped. I approached her stall and placed the ball back in. She seemed disappointed but perked up when I gave her a piece of bison jerky. After a few head scratches I headed off to finish my work for the day.

This afternoon I went to visit Cor again. When she saw me she threw her ball at me once more. This time I was prepared and caught it, getting a happy whinny from her. We played catch for a bit before I approached and opened her stall. I grabbed a brush and held it out to her. Just like with the treats she sniffed it curiously, even biting it. When she seemed to have investigated it to her liking, I slowly began to brush her. Cor was surprised but let me. I brushed her for a bit, watching her body language. She was relaxed before suddenly she grabbed the brush from my hand and tossed it onto the floor. I took that to mean she was done with grooming. Cor looked very pleased with herself and I rolled my eyes. I gave her a last few nose scratches before giving her a bit of jerky and heading off.
