Spring is a time of new beginnings for Mystic Isle. To many the season of the hare is the best part of the year, with brilliant blue skies and the knowledge that the harsh rains and storms of winter are coming to an end. It is a time filled with possibilities and the breath of new life.

So in celebration they partake in a tradition called the 5 days of initia.

The first day is for lions to fix up the wounds of the past, they mend bridges and dens broken by storms, mudslides or wind but also forgive and apologize to others and put to rest bad blood. It is a day of reconciliation a day to put egos aside.

The second day lions reflect on what they have, together they go count the amount of prey within the island, how many nesting birds, new fawns, and the cubs favorite, how many fluffy bunny kits there are. The pride then gathers to speak of this new life and often tell of their own future cubs, knowing that the island is recovering from its season of rest. They also remark on their own lives, smiling as they recount how many other lions they call friends and of the valuable things they have, knowing that they are never alone.

The third day is many lions least favorite, as they have a small taste of what it's like to have nothing. On this day no prey is killed, instead the only food is berries and herbs, reminding the lions of what life would be like without their hunters, without claws or fangs. A few take it a step further, sleeping out of their dens and feeling for a night what life would be like without shelter. It makes them kinder, knowing others don’t have the same benefits they do.


On the day the pride works to make sure they do not have to experience times like the third day. Many set out to spread seeds and to give the rabbits food to make sure they can feed their offspring. The hunters hold meetings to make sure they never take more than the island can support. The foragers and those who only appear to do little things for the pride, such as make nests and provide alternate food sources are properly thanked.

But the fifth day is the day Initia is most known for. It is truly the day of new beginnings, after fixing the broken, finding and truly appreciating what they have, the lions of Mystic Isle can finally grow. This day of Initia is a lot more open than the other days, with no set activities to choose between. Instead lions are simply to start something new, new habits, make new friends and relationships and take up new hobbies. It is a day of improvement, romance, art and entertainment. Oftentimes talent shows are set up, allowing a chance for lions to show off art and singing and even once juggling. This year painting with the juices of berries on pale bark seems particularly popular.

Every spring, the Lions of the Waves celebrate the Day of Creation. That is the day that the Great Lion made the first lion on the earth. No one knows exactly what day it was, but the pride celebrates it on the spring equinox. The day is filled with games and cheer, everyone makes flower crowns and necklaces for each other to wear, and lions exchange homemade gifts. The day begins just before sunrise, with the best storyteller in the pride telling the story of creation. The whole pride gathers on the beach to listen and watch the sun come up.

"When the earth was young, there were no lions. The Great Lion had made all that was out of nothing, and he came and walked upon the land that he had crafted. He watched the birds that he had blessed with wings, and he stood among the flowers that he had clothed in every color of the rainbow. All was beautiful. But the Great Lion was not done creating. He had made creatures of scales, and creatures with hooves, he had made creatures that barked, and creatures that squeaked. But he had another creature in mind, a creature with paws and fur and a voice like thunder.

The Great Lion went out into the middle of a wide grassy area. He dug his claws into the ground that he had created and pulled up lumps of clay. He clipped branches off of a bush nearby, and he chose two smooth stones out of a watering hole. With the clay and the branches he sculpted his creature, for it would be a creature of the earth, not of the sky or of the water. When He had shaped and smoothed it, he placed the stones in its face to be its eyes. Then, he took fur from his own mane and pressed it into the clay of the creature's head. When he was done, he stepped back and stood in front of his clay sculpture.

'Awaken,' he ordered, his voice booming like thunder.

The clay melted into bone and muscle and fur, and the stones became seeing eyes. The few strands of fur from the Great Lion multiplied into a long mane. The creature took a breath, the first its kind had ever breathed.

"What am I?" The creature asked, its voice echoing the sound the Great Lion had made.

"You are called Lion," he told it. "Welcome to the earth, child."

The story should end right as the sun's first rays peek over the horizon. When the rays are seen, signifying the first light seen by the first lion, the whole pride roars as one with the voice that the Great Lion gave to them. They give thanks, and the festivities begin. They gather again at sunset to pray, and spend well into the night singing songs of praise about the Great Lion.

The spring time in the Mbali valley where the pride resides is a time of rebirth and renewal, as the rains are beginning once more. After the first rains return to the valley, the pride hosts its annual 'Naming Ceremony'. The ceremony isn't about giving the lion a name, as they are named at birth, however it's symbolic for giving them a true purpose within the pride. The Naming Ceremony takes place at sunset the day after the first rains have come at a rock between a few trees on the border of the territory with the leopards. It is a test of will, strength and courage that is only taken once by a young lion around the age of two years old. If a lion is unable to perform the task given to it by sunrise the next morning, by pride law, it is banished from the land and may never return.

Once the pride has gathered, the Elders position themselves upon the rock while the rest of the pride sits below them, and the young lions who are taking the test stand in a group in front of the pride. Generally the young males do not take the test and instead support their sisters, cousins and playmates as they take the test. If a male cub has chosen to take the test and succeeds, he may stay in the pride for as long as he chooses. Once the ceremony is over in the morning, the males leave the pride and head out on their own. For any young lionesses, this test is critical for the future survival in the pride. The Elders have watched the lions grow up, and so they already have an idea of their strengths. Depending on what skills they have shown, the Elders give each young lion a task to be completed before sunrise. The tasks consist of capturing prey, sparing with another (could be another young lion taking the test or a pride member hunting them throughout the night), hide and seek (if found, they are disqualified), or a mix of the three. The task must be completed alone, any help from another lion calls for immediate disqualification and therefore banishment. For special lions the Elders have selected for a separate purpose, such as becoming a leader within their ranks, they give a test of will where they must sit in place and cannot move throughout the night.

Once sunrise appears and the young lions have returned from their tasks successfully, they are then granted a place within the pride and are given their new role to perform. The pride members roar together to celebrate, to wake up the sun and the Gods to bring about a new day with a new pride. The celebration lasts throughout the day as the young lions join their new teams and are greeted with respect and no longer seen as cubs, as they are now a functioning member of the pride.

The Pekee Pamoja tribe sees spring during March, April, and May. A lot happens during this time. With the first two months of the year being the wet season, things are now hydrated and ready to start regrowing. Trees regain their leaves, the flowers blossom, and the weather is starting to warm up nicely. The first day of spring there is often a feast to welcome the season. On this day, the entire pride meets in the valley of ukumbi wa paradiso. This, however, is not the greatest event of the season.
During the month of December, couples may decide to become partners for life or perhaps if they aren't ready for the commitment, two lions can have a fling. The result is usually a few cubs being born throughout spring. The biggest celebration in the spring would have to be Maisha Mapya which translates to A New Life. This happens on the last day of spring when it's ensured that all cubs have been born (or at least those that come from the time of Msimu wa Upendo [the season of love] since love doesn't have a schedule and some lions find themselves whisked away during travels). This celebration of life is another gathering in the valley held by the ruling king and queen. All members, including those in the two outer regions, travel to this momentous occasion. There is, of course, a feast (the king is quite fond of them) and the ruling couple meets with the families that have had new additions.
After everyone has eaten, the ceremony truly begins. To officially welcome the cubs into the pride, the ruling king and queen will mark the cubs with a painted paw. This "sealing" of sorts is to symbolize they're a part of the Pekee Pamoja pride. After all the cubs have been marked, the ruling queen makes a speech of welcome for the cubs.
