Gender;; Molly
Age;; 10 Moons
Clan;; GealachClan
Rank;; Apprentice
Prompt;;“Are you listening, Swanpaw?”
“Yeah…”
“Then what did I say?”
The pale white feline turned her head, blinking slowly at her mentor, Badgerpine. The tom was visibly irritated, his green gaze steely and cold as he awaited a response.
“I dunno.” Swanpaw shrugged, shuffling her paw through the dirt. Badgerpine sighed, flustered with his disinterested apprentice, opening his maw but struggling to find the right words.
“Let’s finish up early – it’s quite hot today.” Ploverswoop, the other mentor in the clearing, mewed. Badgerpine nodded, walking away with a flick of his tail. Ploverswoop nodded to dismiss her own apprentice, Willowpaw, who dutifully obeyed and scampered away from the clearing without even glancing back to her sister.
Swanpaw scowled as she vanished into the brush.
“Walk with me, Swanpaw.”
‘Here we go,’ Swanpaw huffed, rising to her paws and trailing after Ploverswoop. Swanpaw glanced up at the molly, curious when the warrior would start the berating lecture, expressing disappointment and giving a punishment for her disobedience. But all she could see on the molly’s face was a thoughtful look, with no particular emotion running through her bright eyes.
Finally, Ploverswoop broke the silence. “Just because you’re not good at battle practice doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try, no matter how much it troubles you.”
Swanpaw hissed, frustrated that she was so easily read. “It’s easy for you to say! I’m so small that anything I do is pathetic!” She swiped at the heather, sending pieces flying. “And Willowpaw is so perfect at it and pretends she isn’t. It drives me mad!”
Ploverswoop paused. “How do you think Morningstar fares in battle? Do you think, because she is short, she simply gives up?”
Swanpaw frowned, but shook her head, realisation dawning across her face.
“She uses it to her advantage. Turn your disadvantages into strengths, Swanpaw! We can ask for Morningstar’s help, if you want. All you need to do is talk about your troubles to us – we’re here to help you learn.”
Swanpaw stared up at Ploverswoop. “Would Morningstar really help me?”
“Of course!” Ploverswoop laughed, nudging the apprentice. “What sort of leader wouldn’t help her clanmates? Let’s go ask her. But first, Swanpaw?”
“Yeah?” The white molly mewed.
“For slacking off, you’re on tick-clearing duty for the elders.”
Swanpaw scowled, but nodded, not minding the punishment, and headed back to camp with optimism for the first time in a long time.
