There is a saying in the old town of Shetland (which is now a shell of what it was), "beware the old church grounds, and run if you see a ghostly white creature, or it shall be the last thing you see". Now the reason for that saying is a Strider lives under the church grounds in a cave system there. With all the people gone missing in those grounds, you would think they're all dead but within the cave system there is a small group of humans that the strider takes care of till they are safe from what they ran away from, and they know to never speak of the mysterious strider that took care of them in their time of need no matter how angry they get at others for slandering the strider.
