Name: Rakje
Companion: Rakje had always been made fun of for his hair—if not that, he was straight-up scolded for it, particularly by his parents and other older individuals who believed that he was no more than some kind of troublemaker. "Why not cut it?" they would always ask. "How can you see?" "Are you some kind of delinquent?" "Are you emo?" "Do you know it looks ugly?" And on, and on, and on.
And contrary to these strangers' beliefs, Rakje was a very kind and gentle soul. No, he wasn't a delinquent, and no, he wasn't emo. Yes, he can see, and he thinks it looks very nice, thank you. However, despite the constant questioning, and as hard as he tried to convince himself that he indeed did look very nice, Rakje couldn't admit that these words began to hurt him. He began to doubt himself, and as the days went on, even sometimes without those rude questions, he wondered if he really did look just... plain stupid. He had gotten incredibly close to cutting it one day.
It so happens that on that day, he'd been walking home by himself on an unfamiliar country road. He just wanted some time to himself, an excuse to emotionally prepare himself for getting rid of some important part of his identity. He'd been nearing his home when he heard it; the low sound of an animal, a single, somber moo—and that's when he found himself facing a lone highland cow.
But that's not what struck Rakje so deeply. The animal that faced him had its own mop of messy hair and bangs, sitting directly above its eyes, obscuring its face partially. It was a normal, everyday animal... that looked just like him. At once, he was overcome with tears. The cow didn't understand, but it moved gently and kindly toward him, as though to comfort him regardless; and all Rakje could do was hug it. He cried for hours and for what he felt was a stupid reason. Here he'd been, so close to cutting his precious hair, when this cow that looked so much like him had approached as though it was a sign from some higher power saying, don't do it.
After he'd finished being so emotional, Rakje knew that he could not leave this cow alone. He didn't know why it was alone, or where it had come from, but he knew that it was now the two of them, from now, until forever. His family wasn't too thrilled to find a cow in the home, but they accepted it after a while. He and the cow, who he came to name Daisy, became inseparable. She became a close companion and a reminder that he is who he is and shouldn't be what others want him to be. He'd do as much as he could with her and she became his confidant, a best friend he never had before. And to be honest, that was perfectly fine with him.
