As soon as he saw the seemingly never ending drop his nerves struck him with the force of lightning. He froze on the spot, too afraid to move. A strange paralysing sickness crept from his stomach and slowly spread all around his body. Ezcore found himself in a state of panic, frantically running and screaming in his mind. Yet on the outside he looked to be completely calm.
Determined to preserve his tough persona Ezcore glanced back confidently towards the others. They were chanting now, although he was in such a state of adrenaline induced panic that he wasn't hearing the words at this point. He noted that they seemed very excited, whatever they were saying. He knew he had to run off this cliff soon, or else he was going to put his reputation on the line.
He took a deep breath. His heart felt as if it were trying to escape his body, flying up into the sky where he truly wanted to be. He took 5 large strides back and spread out his wings. The small group of friends had since evolved into crowd of spectators, all were there just to see him fly.
He closed his eyes and ran. He could hear cheers slowly drifting into the background. It felt like time had frozen.
His mind briefly few into a childhood memory. He was a small cub, but his wings grew very quickly. As a result he always stumbled around awkwardly around, constantly out of balance. One day his mother brought him and his siblings to a large rock. They climed to the top and took it in turns to jump. His siblings got the hang of it quickly, but Ezcore was always nervous. He had always been the runt of the litter. He had always been the nervous and cowardly one. After some encouragement he ran but slipped and fell down face first. He never bothered to try flying again after that. Until now, that was.
He opened his eyes again. He dropped in the air suddenly, only to frantically flap his way back up. His nerves were still freaking out but the distant encouragement of those watching him motivated him to continue.
He laughed to himself. He would have never done something as crazy as this when he was a cub. Now growing in confidence he flew further and further away from the crowd, no longer needing their encouragement. He was by no means perfect at it, but he was flying. He was utterly amazed at the fact that he was flying. After all these years of staying on the ground when he could have been up amongst the clouds, above everyone else.
In this moment he felt as if a weight had been lifted from him. He had finally conquered the one fear he always had.
