"Okay," A soft voice sighed as books could be heard shuffling around. Trey pushed himself back from his desk and followed his eager friend Rae out to the street, looking down at the smaller man with a bored expression. "And you want to do this why, exactly?"

"Because you guys do it all the time! Everywhere I look people are covered in the things, Trey! I want to be like them!"

"And I'm joining you because you don't want to do this alone?"

"That and you'd look good with them."

"Whatever. Let's go," Treyco unlocked his car and got in the driver's seat, waiting for his alien pal to get in with him. It had been a year since they'd met, and a little under eight months since he'd learned Rae's secret, but he didn't mind that the man with him wasn't human. He was like a little brother to the mercenary, and if he wanted to get his ears pierced with Trey, well, he wouldn't complain... much.

The drive to the tattoo and piercing parlor was short, the dense city making most things within three miles tops, and surprisingly, the parking was nearly empty. Trey thanked whatever was watching over them under his breath as he parked and got out of the car, waiting for Rae to follow suit. Once they were next to each other, Rae instinctively grabbed his hand and a small swell of protectiveness filled Treyco briefly before he pushed it aside and headed to the door, opening it and taking in the empty parlor.

"Hey! What're you looking for today?" A chipper voice greeted them from somewhere in the store, hidden from view.

"Just looking to get our ears pierced, if that's something you do?" Trey called back, eyes glancing around and taking in details out of habit.

"Yeah, gimme a second and I can come up and get you set up- do you want to do this now or make an appointment?"

"Now would be ideal, but I understand if you can't."

"We have a pretty free schedule today, luckily, so... I think I can squeeze you in. How many?"

"Two, both just looking for ear piercings," Treyco looked at Rae for confirmation, but he was distracted by a book with many different piercings in it. The set he was looking at looked a bit too edgy for him, but Trey wasn't going to judge him for his choices. He was, however, going to judge when Rae turned and pointed at the book and then him, silently telling Trey to get them. A laugh bubbled up in Treyco's throat and he covered his mouth with his free hand before shrugging and nodding, "and a... pair? of spider bites? I think?"

"Oh! Good choice. I can get that done in a few minutes!" The face behind the voice suddenly appeared, a tall man with bubblegum hair, and he brushed said hair out of his eyes as he came up to the counter, tapping away at a tablet before throwing the total at the two. Rae cringed back at the number, but Trey shrugged and nodded before they were led back to a small area, covered in art but smelling like cleaning solution.

The procedure itself took only a few minutes, and while Rae was panicking about his turn after Trey, Trey looked at himself in one of the large mirrors surrounding them. The piercings were definitely something he would have to get used to, from the rubbing in his mouth to just the look of them, but they were somehow just perfect.

"Dude, they're gonna look so good once I get them!" Siouxsie said to their friend, in reference to the piercing they were planning to get. It was studs on both sides of their face next to her lips, also called Dahlia bites. They already had a few ear piercings but they wanted more. The punk subculture was growing on them; a few months ago their friend had taken them to a punk show and Siouxsie loved it. They thought piercings looked super cool on everyone who had them and they wanted to look more punk, so she decided to get more piercings.
After their Dahlia bites, Siouxsie wanted an industrial piercing. It's a bar of metal that goes through both sides of their ears. They refused to admit it, but they were a bit scared before this one. They had heard that this could hurt. They were relieved after it was done; they had been nervous for no reason. This piercing healed well, too.
Siouxsie bought blue gauges impulsively when she saw them for sale. She bought a few more for the process of stretching her ears first, but those blue ones were the end goal. (196 words)

"Happy birthday, Tay"
A small box, handed to him with such care. Carefully, he opened it, peering into the box. there sat a pair of gauges, that smiled back at him. Grinning widely, almost like those silly gauges, he chuckled.
"Dude, my ears aren't even pierced."
A quiet snicker, laughter errupted from the both of them. He set down the box, brushed his once short hair out of his face.
"And it isn't even my birthday, what's with the gift?"
The tone in his voice dropped, he seemed sadder now. A firm grasp on his shoulder told him something wasn't right.
"Well.. I won't be here for your birthday this year. They need me out there."
He looked back at the box, then back to the ground.
"They can't need you more, right?"
Softly he sobbed, clutching that small box. He didn't want to let go of it.
"I'm sorry, but I have to, it's my job."
A gentle nod, tears staining his soft cheeks.
"You'll be back for next year, right?"
That soft hand was under his chin, making him look into their gentle eyes.
"I'll be back, I promise."

"Yeah I'm sure i wanna get them pierced."
He said firmly, trying to assure himself. Though he feared needles, he was ready for this.
All he wanted was to be able to wear those special gauges. The way they smiled at him. Those memories he had of them.
3... 2... 1... Done.
It stung a bit, but it wasn't that bad.
He sighed softly as he got up off the chair. He messed with his hair, ready to start stretching so he could wear the gauges.
His friend never did come back, and only a month ago he'd been sent a letter.
A letter holding the dog tag.
It crushed his soul.
"He'd be proud of me.. I finally did it."
He wore it in their memory,
He missed them dearly, he wanted to show them, wanted to show them that he was finally able to wear those special.. special gauges.
Though he never could, he still kept on working toward it.
The memory of that day kept him going.
He was gonna show them somehow.

After a while, he was finally able to put them in.
He sobbed when he did, tears of pure joy.
The dog tag hung around his neck.
He just stared for a while,
by then he had decided to get two more ear piercings.
"It looks perfect..."
He softly spoke to himself, mustering a small smile.
He messed with his hair,
fluffing it up like they would have.

"Hah, it seems the world hasn't found me out yet. Maybe someday they will, but for now, kid, I'll let ya in on a lil secret. It's not like anyone would believe you anyway, right?"

The lanky male next to you loudly drags over a shabby barstool, lazily plopping on it as he tosses you a sideways grin. You haven't been at this bar for long, and you already felt out of place. The first bar you've already been to, and you already have a guy drowning your ears with whatever feat he wanted to exaggerate about; but it's not like you had anything better to do on a Thursday night at 3 in the morning, so why not? Not like anything he'd have to say would be the truth anyways.

"So, whaddya think of these good ol' piercings of mine?" The guy leans over, creeping a bit too far into your personal space for comfort. You pulled your head back, quickly grabbing a sip of your drink, and give him a totally-not-sarcastic thumbs up. While his 'collection' of piercings was definitely impressive, you weren't too sure what the point of all of it was. At least the thumbs up seemed to satisfy him, and he scooted back into his seat.

"These aren't just for show, you know. Sure, people who typically cover their bodies in piercings do it for looks, but not me. Yeah, maybe I do like the look, but these good ol' boys have another purpose too. Ya see, they're made of solid gold. Not just any crappy, 6k gold or gold plated either-- solid, honkin gold." The guy took another chug of his drink, slamming the now-empty glass down. The bartender pretended to not notice.

"Ever since I was a tiny lad, my one and only career was livin on the streets, eating out of the trash. But now, I've realized the ways of the world, and found out the biggest mistake of all the thieves around me. See, kid, if you're ever going to steal somethin from someone, make sure you do it for good reason, first of all. Don't steal from the poor, but don't steal from the good rich people that donate to charity either. Steal from the ones that are an ass to the people beneath them, since they probably didn't earn that money themselves either. And second?" He said, leaning forward once again. "Don't be stupid and don't just hide what you stole. They'll find it, they always will." You assumed he was talking about the police.

"Hide it right in front of their noses. Turn it into a game-- how well can you hide it just in plain sight. No one thinks that anyone who steals can be smart, but oh trust me, you can. That's where it matters. I've stolen hundreds of pieces of gold jewelry and coins from the rich. Some haven't even noticed it yet, but that's okay, they'll be too late. It's not their gold anymore, it's something else now." He gestures to the variety of piercings on his body, ranging from on his face to one peeking out of his chest.

"Like I said, right under their noses-- or rather, mine," he said, chuckling. With one quick motion, he stood up, shoving his barstool under the bar, and tossed a handful of coins onto the counter. "Thanks for the soda," he said, waving to the bartender as he gave your back a solid pat and walked off, the gold piercings shimmering vividly in the dim bar light.

Maybe he was telling the truth after all.
