Daypaw couldn’t believe it when her mentor was chosen for her. She was going to be trained under the deputy Ripplestrike. There were days where Daypaw didn’t even remember that she was the deputy because of how casual she was during training. Ripplestrike was a great teacher, but her social skills were a bit strange at times.

One example that comes to mind was one day when they were supposed to be solidifying Daypaw’s hunting techniques. Ripplestrike looked distracted as she corrected Daypaw’s hunting position. “Daypaw… have you made a choice yet?” Ripplestrike broke the silence with a smile. It appeared genuine, but Daypaw couldn’t help but feel confused at the question.

“Choice? ‘Bout what?” Her mentor’s face scrunched up a little, “Sorry. About what Ripplestrike?”

“That wasn’t the issue Daypaw. You don’t have to be so formal with me, just because I’m deputy. However you do need to make a choice soon you’ll be a warrior in no time.”

Daypaw stood straight up, tilting her head as she stared. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

It was almost as if she could see Ripplestrike’s brain thinking. “Oh! I didn’t explain! As a warrior you can choose to be an Explorer or a Protector. It’s a new system so training is more specialized. I think you’d make a great protector. I see how you are with your clanmates, you would never put them in danger.” Her face had a hint of embarrassment in it, but it was overshadowed by the pride that clearly showed.

Daypaw laughed when she finally received an explanation. “You should have started with that… but yeah I would love to learn how to better protect my clanmates. I couldn’t live with myself if I couldn’t keep them safe, you know me very well Ripplestrike.”

Slitherpaw causes his mentor, Rainsight, more than a little trouble. For such a small cat, Slitherpaw sure is headstrong. He only wants to do things his way and when he wants to. This doesn't mesh well with Rainsight, who is also very strong willed and tries to be a rather strict mentor. The more Rainsight pushes, the more Slitherpaw pulls away. Lately, it seems that Rainsight can't even find Slitherpaw when it's time for training. Slitherpaw has taken to skipping out on his more mundane apprentice duties, sneaking out of camp to go hunting on his own and bask about leisurely. Rainsight is just about fed up with him, the two of them just don't mesh well, what could they learn from each other?

whimbrel sat up, spitting out a mouthful of comfrey with a grimace. the slightly bitter taste was amplified by the amount he had managed to pull from the ground, and now his face and paws dripped with rainwater.

a few tail-lengths away, snapper tooth's head popped up with an identical glob of greenness hanging from his jaws. the older tom rested his mouthful on the ground and mewed to whimbrel, "having any luck, little chipmunk?"

whimbrel frowned at hearing the endearing nickname snapper had assigned him. it was so demeaning and weak. whimbrel didn't want to be weak. he was an entire six moons now, could he not be saddled with such a cutesy moniker? "yes, i've found plenty. can we be finished now?"

snapper surveyed the pile that the tenderfoot had gathered, and nodded. "aye, i suppose that's enough for now. let's get this back to camp to dry. easy now," he said as whimbrel began to hastily scuff up his pile. "if we get dirt in the leaves then they'll be ruined."

whimbrel bit his tongue back. why was he being so cavalier? he had always heard that snapper tooth was one of the best claws in the clan, but why did he insist on babying whimbrel? with deliberate movement so as to not ruffle snapper's fur, whimbrel slowly piled together the wet comfrey stalks and grabbed it in his jaws.

snapper had already gathered his pile, and was now trotting away with his tail aloft and swaying gently. it seemed as if he were beckoning whimbrel like a wayward kit.

the young tom's chest tightened with annoyance. maybe he didn't realize he was doing it, but it still frustrated him to no end. he was a tenderfoot now! when was he going to be treated like one?

Prompt;; Sunpaw is "tight", as the kids would say, with his mentor Redwhisker. They had a rocky relationship at first because their headstrong personalities clashed, both wanting to do this instead of that, but they slipped into an easy rhythm and found common ground in making jokes and having the same sense of humour.

Unfortunately, this also means the two wreak havoc on the camp when they're together, because Redwhisker enjoys making his training sessions enjoyable - meaning, games and other things to make it fun. He understands young apprentices might not enjoy a rigid or strict mentor so he tries his best to be flexible to Sunpaw's way of learning. (And it works because Sunpaw readily takes in information and knowledge.)

(Sometimes Acornstar regrets his decision to pair the two together, but if they work together, there's nothing.. bad.. about it.)

Honeycloud is... known to be one of the harshest mentors... in all of Jayclan history (and Jayclan has a bad reputation for being... Not Nice), so, Goldenpaw thanks her ancestors for the two on two mentors and apprentices method Jayclan uses and that she has Thistlewhisker as her partnered mentor. Honeycloud is a harsh mentor who gives rigorous training that only Amberwind would praise as enjoyable, and Thistlewhisker is... not that.

Goldenpaw doesn't hate Honeycloud, she really likes her actually (outside of clan designated mentor/apprentice training time) but oh heavens above are her methods taxing. She doesn't get breaks beyond the days Thistlewhisker leads the exercises. How those two are mates, she'll never understand. They're polar opposites.

The only times she might actually hate Honeycloud is when she brings in her favored former apprentice, Amberwind. The only solace she gets those days is seeing how Honeycloud doesn't bother treating them any different, she insults them all equally. She even insults Thistlewhisker, albeit in a fond tone that makes it sound more like "my dearest darling love of my life soulmate favorite cat" than the "idiot" she actually says.

Occasionally Snakerock, Amberwind's partnered apprentice and Thistlewhisker's former apprentice, will join too, but she sits on the sidelines with an amused expression instead of throwing her, a poor helpless apprentice, around the clearing they train in which earns her a gold star (haha...get it.. cause.. GOLDENpaw...alright, Goldenpaw admits it isn't that funny, but still) in Goldenpaw's mind.

Despite all of her complaints, Goldenpaw can't be too upset. She admires Honeycloud's impressive skills and thanks to all the training that makes her want to cry, she and her partner are leagues ahead of the other apprentices and probably around a warriors required skill level despite only training for a month.

Cloverpaw always felt like she would never live up the role that her mentor plays in the Clan. She felt small compared to him. She wasn't the best at anything. She wasn't good at hunting, she wasn't good at fighting, she wasn't even good at normal apprentice duties. She waited for the day he would get tired of her and pass her off to another mentor.

But that time never came.

She came to learn that Sycamorestar was probably the most patient cat in the clan. All he did was encourage her and told her he was proud of her regardless of her failings. He was always kind with his remarks and gently guided her towards bettering herself in all aspects.

She came to look up to him, even considering him a father figure. She started to look forward to his lessons. She wanted to prove to him that after all this encouragement she would make him proud. Even if she didn't get good at much, she knew Sycamorestar would guide her. And she was grateful.

Sandlake's mentor is Iceclaw, an older, completely white tom with long, fluffy fur. He tends to be collected and serious, although he is often quite supportive of his apprentice. If Sandlake is honest, he doesn't like Iceclaw at all. There's just something about the other tom that ticks him off. He does care about learning the ways of the clan, but it's just too difficult to get over his distaste for Iceclaw to really focus on his training.

One day the pair were out practicing hunting. Iceclaw set them up in an area that prey should be plentiful in and let Sandlake search out something to catch. After a particularly bad pounce that left the younger cat sprawled in the dirt, he snapped at his mentor.

"Leave me alone! I'd be better at this if you were a better mentor, you know," he said, jumping up and shaking some of the dirt from his pelt.

Iceclaw chuckled at this. "I've trained apprentices before, and they all managed to be better than you at this point. I don't think it's me,"

Tail bristling in shock, Sandlake stalked away, grumbling to himself. That night (after being lectured by Shadowstar for ditching his training) he sat in the apprentice's den, thinking about what Iceclaw had said. Had he been wrong all this time?

Maybe Iceclaw was right... I guess it is my fault that I'm so bad...

After this revelation, Sandlake spent less time complaining and more time listening to his mentor. His distaste for Iceclaw lessened and lessened as he realized that the older cat was actually really knowledgeable and a beast when it came to fighting. By the time he was promoted to warrior, he actually really liked him.

Prompt;; "How can you stand him?!" an enraged yowl comes from behind me.
aaaaI turn around, a look of surprise on my face. "Brindlepaw," I greet the apprentice. He's not mine, but we're still close. When he'd been a kit, he used to follow me around everywhere. Now I mentor his brother. "Stand who?"
aaaa"Him!" the tom yowls. "He's always complaining about what I do wrong and when I do something right, he just scowls! It's like he wants me to fail apprentice training! I don't care that he's the foxhearted deputy out of all things, he makes a horrible mentor! I've been his apprentice for a moon, now, I and don't think he's complimented me once."
aaaaAh. So that's who Brindlepaw is complaining about. I should've known that it would be about Jayclaw. It wasn't unknown to the clan how much the pair hated each other and today, Jawclaw had set up an unusually grueling training session, even for him.
aaaaBut my eyes twinkle.
aaaa"Brindlepaw, do you know who my mentor was?" I ask the irritated tom.
aaaa"Who?" he asks bluntly.
aaaa"Well, think about it... you weren't the first apprentice Jayclaw ever had, and neither was I, but-"
aaaaBrindlepaw gagged. "Jayclaw mentored you?"
aaaa"You don't have to like him by any means, but if you give him the respect that he might or might not deserve, then I'm sure you'll find that training might become a bit more enjoyable for you."
aaaaOf course, the pair's relationship didn't improve much, even after that, but if Jayclaw stopped training early after Brindlepaw got hurt, no one made a comment about it. And if Brindlepaw went on a patrol with Jayclaw the next day without being forced, then no one said anything about that, either.
