That first winter is the worst the clan has seen in generations.

Everywhere she looks, ice covers the ground in sheets; deadly in some places near the river. Cats lose their footing, slip and fall on the ice; a patrol gets lost for three days after a blizzard rolls in and sets visibility to zero. She can't see more than a paw's-length in front of her, even in so simple a journey as crossing from one side of camp to the other. At first Harekit delights in the frigid, fluffy flakes, tiny silver stars that match her coat. After a while, though, the cold and oppressive damp wears even this kit's spirits low.

What little refuge there remains from snow and ice vanishes within the week. Melting snow on bodies turns the bottom of dens into a mire of cold mud, paws and bellies sticky and half-frozen as ice howls down off the mountain with no sign of stopping.
"It will end soon," Mother tells her, and even a kit as young as she can spot the lie, "We will be warm soon."

By the time winter is over, Harekit will tell anyone who listens - loudly, in that tiny kit's voice of hers - how much she hates snow.

Shimmerkit felt a cold, sharp tang on her nose. Bright blue eyes fluttering open, she yelped in surprise. She glanced upward curiously, wondering where the sensation came from. Her mother, still sound asleep, paid no notice to the young kit's sudden waking. Shimmerkit wondered if a stray raindrop had fallen through the crack in the den roof. But even then, it felt different.
She crawled out of the den as silently as she could, taking care not to wake up the other queens and kits in the nursery. As soon as she stepped outside, her eyes widened and her jaw dropped in wonder.

The ground and dens and every surface she could see were coated in a crystalline white material she couldn't put a name to. The entire camp glimmered and sparkled under the morning sun, and the scene was almost too much for the young kit to take. Without care to the fact that she could fall into a hidden hole or trip, she squealed in excitement and bounded into the clearing, kicking powder in every which direction.

"Shimmerkit, is that you?"

Shimmerkit stopped, her heart lurching in excitement. She turned and saw Aspenstar sleepily emerging from the leader's den. "A-Aspenstar! Look!"

Aspenstar purred softly, looking upon the kit with endearment. "This is your first snow, isn't it, Shimmerkit?"

Snow. Shimmerkit finally had a word for it. She stared at her leader, wide-eyed, and nodded vigorously. "It's so pretty!" Shimmerkit abruptly dove into the deep layer of snow, giggling as more snow flurried into the air.

Aspenstar's gaze warmed with nostalgia. "Ah, kits."

work in progress!

Hail was born near the end of the thaw-season, when the tundra grass was open to the sky and wildflowers bloomed on the mountainside and fish swam in the streams. His kithood was happy for those first few moons, and his pelt grew sleek and shiny from plentiful food available to his mother, and then to himself when he passed nursing age.

His birth had come later than his mother had anticipated- and because of that, she was afraid. Hail didn’t understand, really, why his mother started to become tense and worried, and why the breezes started to become colder.

“The snow-season is coming,” said his mother when he asked.

“What’s snow?” he asked, blue eyes wide.

“Snow is cold,” said Mama, staring past him into the distance. “It comes from the clouds and covers the ground. The little flakes of snow that fall are pretty, but they are cold as ice. You will have to be strong when the snows come, Hail. The snow-season is a dangerous time.”

“I’ll be strong, Mama!” he squeaked, lashing his tiny tail. He’d brave the snow when it came. Just like Mama had asked him to.

-----

His mother was out hunting when the first flakes started to fall. The sky had been darkening all day, like a great gray cat curling its paws across the sky, and when the clouds finally opened up- it was snow.

Hail watched in awe as the thick fluffy flakes drifted downward, dancing toward the grass. He huddled as near the den entrance as he dared, not wanting to go out into the unfamiliar snow but wanting to get a close look. He peered skeptically at one that fell near his paws, drifting toward the warm interior of the den. How were these going to cover the ground? They were so small. He bent down to look more closely. It was pretty, with tiny elegant points that melted rapidly as he let out a small puff of breath.

Hail dared a step out of the den. This snow didn’t seem so bad. He squeaked in shock as a flake alighted on his nose. It was cold, just like Mama had said, and he tried to paw it from his nose. He could feel more flakes pattering down, sticking to his fur, and decided to retreat back to the den. Mama would have to be back soon, he was sure. He would wait for her, and perhaps lick the snowflakes from her fur when she returned.

The snowstorm passed on. The flakes began falling in earnest, no longer slow and gentle but pouring from the clouds as fiercely as rain, and the grass began to disappear. Now he understood why his mother had been afraid of the snow-season. Hail tried unsuccessfully to peer through the storm and see his mother’s approach, but could see nothing other than the swirling white flakes. Where was she? His tiny chest felt almost constricted with fear- what if she’d gotten lost? What if she couldn’t see where she was going?

“Mama!” he called weakly into the storm. The snowflakes continued their ferocious downward fall.

His mother didn’t return.

"Drizzlekit, Drizzlekit! Mommy said it's going to snow today."

The silver kit blinked with wide eyes. "...snow?" she echoed, tilting her head. "What's that?"

"It's when white fluff falls from the sky! It's cold and it piles up on the ground and makes everything really pretty. You'll love it!" Her foster sister, Coralkit, nudged her playfully. "When it's done falling I can teach you my favorite games!"

    "Do you mean like rain?"

"Oh, no, rain just makes everything gross and muddy. Snow is soooo much better, trust me."

Drizzlekit frowned. She loved the rain, how it drummed a steady rhythm on the earth, how it streamed down her back and rolled off her whiskers. While her littermates huddled inside, she would scamper out into the rain, squealing with glee at its familiar pitter-patter. But if Coralkit said so, then she might as well believe it.

"I'll be right back." Drizzlekit bounded outside, blue eyes flicking across the camp. There! She recognized the familiar dark tabby pelt of her father and bounded up to him.

"Daddy! Did you know it's going to snow today?" she squeaked, bouncing on her paws.

The tall tabby turned, golden eyes flashing with shock and pain as he met her gaze. Since Drizzlekit's mother had died in the infamous battle, he hadn't visited his daughter.

"Y-yes." His eyes kept flicking away and back, and he shifted his weight uneasily.

"What is it like? Is it fun? Will you play with me?" Drizzlekit grinned eagerly.

"I... I'm sorry, but I'm busy." He turned, tail dragging on the ground.

The little kit tilted her head, shoulders sinking with disappointment. "Bye," she called, but he'd already disappeared into the warriors' den without a goodbye.

She padded back to the nursery, questions swirling in her head. Why didn't her father visit her anymore? Why was he busy? As she spotted Buzzardflight playing with his daughters, Coralkit and Avenkit, one more question surfaced - Did he still love her?

Tiny white flakes began drifting from the sky as Drizzlekit ducked back into the nursery. The darkness and silence were welcoming - she was left alone in the den as the other kits scampered outside, squealing with glee.

She burrowed into her nest, tucking her muzzle under her paws. She wasn't excited about the snow anymore. She no longer wanted to play. She felt utterly alone, and she let out a tiny sigh.

A tongue lapped her fur reassuringly. A gentle voice whispered, "Don't worry, sweetheart."

Drizzlekit raised her head, burying her muzzle into her mother's starry fur, breathing in her familiar scent. "Why won't Daddy play with me?" she whined softly. "I wish you could play with me, Mommy. I miss you."

The spirit curled herself around Drizzlekit, holding her close, comforting her with nuzzles. Her gaze was gentle and loving, and her voice was soothing as she replied, "He's still hurt. He misses me, too, just like you do. It will take time, but some day, he will be ready to play with you."

"I wish you were here," Drizzlekit whispered sadly, tears welling in her round eyes.

She brushed her daughter's tears away. "It's alright, darling. I'm here."

Jaypaw peeked outside of the den, taking a big gulp of the crisp air. The ground was coated with a fresh layer of ivory white, and dots fell glided through the air, only to disappear as soon as they grasped an object. The first winter Jaypaw would ever see. He would reminisce this moment, surely. Raising a paw, he stepped into the crunchy ground, only to let out a small shriek as his paw shot forward, deeper into the snow. He pulled his paw out quickly, heart thrumming. Glancing up, he noticed the depth of the snow. Warriors weren't simply padding in the snow. Their paws were completely engulfed. Did it not scare them? Slowly, Jaypaw gathered the courage to go into the snow.
"Jaypaw!" He paused, turning to look at his sister. Her fur was glossy, and her eyes shone. "This is the coolest! Isn't the snow amazing! Look at all the white, and I bet I could make something with the snow!" Jaypaw's sister continued rambling, and Jaypaw turned, ignoring her. He was more concerned about the deep snow. What if he stepped on something? What if there was a hidden hole? Placing a paw, Jaypaw gently prodded the snow. Taking a big gulp, he stepped forward, shrieking in surprise when he fell forwards, face planting into the thick coating of snow. Quickly raising his head, Jaypaw tried to shake his pelt, snow seeping into his fur, filling every part of him. He was disrupted by a cat picking him up by the scruff, muttering.
