prompt; (572 words) As the cold came, the world seems to take a deep breath before settling down into a dark and quiet slumber. The creatures of the woods hid in their caves and burrows, joining nature in its peaceful sleep. But as the snow fell, blanketing the world in silence, there is one who does not sleep. A little dragon hops through the snow, her wings spread in bliss as she sends clumps if the white powder flying into the air with a flick of her tail. She lets out a shrill chirp before collapsing into the snow, rolling around on her back. She was now exhausted and hungry from playing. She sat up and looked around at the forest around her, it was so quiet, nothing could be seen save for the trees and the white expanse of the snow that covered the forest floor. A sudden ache of loneliness panged in her chest. All of her friends were fast asleep and there was practically no food to eat as all of the plants too had gone to sleep. She began to wander through the forest in search of anything besides the glittering snow. She walked for what felt like miles, her feet hurt and she was getting almost too exhausted to move. Suddenly, a white blurred zipped across the snow in front of her. The little dragon sniffed the air, taking a cautious step forward. A shriveled bush nearby began to tremble. The dragon curiously moved towards it. As she grew closer, a small white rabbit hopped out, it’s ears were erect and it’s eyes alert as it sniffed around in the snow. The little dragon froze as she was filled with confliction. She longed for someone to talk to during those cold months but her hunger was also growing too string to ignore. Before she was able to make a choice something loud thumped into the snow behind her, startling the rabbit and causing it to run away. The little dragon shivered with both fear as she slowly turned around. Before her stood a tall and magestic white dragon, he was almost completely covered in long fluffy fur. The little dragon wondered if it was as warm as it seemed and longed to bury herself in it. The white dragon let out a loud huff before bringing his head down to face her “hello little one, why are you alone?” The little dragon looked up at him, somehow she knew he was not dangerous and felt now fear as she stood before him. “All of my friends are asleep, I have no one to talk to and nothing to eat.” The big dragon’s eyes grew soft as he looked at her. “What is your name little one?” She looked slightly confused at this. “Name? I’ve never had a name.” The big dragon smiled at her before straitening up “then, I shall call you Snowdrop.” Snowdrop’s eyes lit up at this. “Snowdrop? Me? Is that my name?” “Yes little one, come with me. whenever the ice comes and the animals go to sleep, I shall be the one to care for you.” The big dragon turned to walk into the trees. Thus, ever winter, the two would stay together to keep each other company during the cold months.

He hibernates with a different family every year. Last year he stayed with a mother bear and her two cubs, and this year he is staying with a family of porcupines. Luckily he has a thick hide so the quills don't bother him in the least.

Mirgu carefully descended the steep mountainside, slipping more than she was walking. Every now and then, she would leap to the air, haphazardly gliding a few yards before stumbling back to the rocky earth. She was young, and her wings weren't yet large enough to lift her to the skies, but with was clear the young dragon yearned to touch the clouds. What else was clear, was that she was on a quest. She would have to be, otherwise no sensible dragon her age would make such a perilous journey. Not to give credit where credit isn't due, but there was a certain persistence in her nature that otherwise hinted at Mirgu's quest. Even as she stumbled and faltered on her treacherous path, she showed no inclination of giving up.

Finally, after many long days of travel, Mirgu reached the base of the mountain.

The land before her was flat, bare. A thick blanket of pristine white covered the world, stretching far into the grey horizon. Though exhausted, she craned her neck and rose onto her back two legs, squinting at the distance.

She heard them before she saw them.

That familiar, welcoming sound of dozens, hundreds of hooves crunching in the powdery snow, the trumpeting bleats of the young and old - oh yes, they were here at last. With great glee, Mirgu took off in the direction of the cacophony. From the snow-obscured horizon came the shape of a massive herd of caribou, more than two hundred strong. The young dragon was accepted into their ranks with little protest, only the newest shying away from the great beast. With renewed vigor, Mirgu made her rounds about the herd, greeting old friends most joyously, and making new ones all the same. She took part in mock-battles between the bucks, danced and pranced about with the fawns, found treats of nuts and lichen for the elders, and slept with the herd at nightfall. She gave each new fawn a name to call them - her favorite this year being a spritely young buck she named Spot for the black blotch on his velveteen nose.

For as long as Mirgu could remember, she spent the winter moons with the caribou. She would chase away wolves most valiantly, helping the larger bucks fight when she must. Humans, too, were not welcomed to hunt her friends, and Mirgu was quick to show them such. Oh, the surprise on their faces when they realized one of the caribou had wings and fangs! In return for her noble deeds, Mirgu's dreadful loneliness was remedied, as the caribou had long ago accepted her as simply an odd-looking member of their herd. Come the spring, Mirgu bid farewell to her antlered friends, and saw them to the edge of her territory before making her ascent back up to her mountain home.

Snow was already beginning to fall down from the gray sky as Fidelion landed in the clearing outside of the secluded hunter shack. Smoke was billowing from the chimney and the soft glow of a fire emanated from the windows. Good, he'd finally found the right place. It was frustrating how much the man moved around.

"Who's out there?" A gruff voice, hoarse from years of smoke and whiskey, called out before the door opened. Out stepped a man bundled up in a jacket, lamp held high, one eye replaced with scars. He squinted his remaining eye and smiled. "Oh, it's you! Come on in."

With the invite given, the dragon carefully squeezed himself through the door into the cabin while the man moved some furniture to clear space in front of the fire. Once everything except the large bearskin was out of the way Fidelion circled once, twice, then settled to lay down comfortably and warm himself by the fire.

"You know, you've been visiting ol' Malcolm every winter for a few years now, ever since I got you out of that other poacher's trap," the man said as he poked at the fire and added more logs to it. "Not saying I mind. Just saying you can stay for longer than just til the snow thaws up top the mountains. Or at least swing by to visit during the warmer months too. I know, I know. I wander around a lot. But you're clever, you could figure it out."

Fidelion just closed his eyes and settled in, the swish of his tail the only acknowledgement he gave. Malcolm wouldn't be offended by his silence, the human never was. It was a comfortable routine every winter, Malcolm would just go about his day, casually talking to him on occasion, sharing various ideas and schemes he had in the works, sneak a few feathers when he thought Fidelion wasn't paying attention, and make sure that the dragon was fed and comfortable.

"Anyways, I'll have supper ready soon. Least I could do after you helped me out way back." Fidelion tilted his head curiously, eyes opening to curiously study the man for a moment. Malcolm quickly said, "Oh don't give me that look. I owe you more than you owe me, even if I did get you out of that trap. Now just get comfy, I'll let you know when food's ready."

The dragon gave another swish of his tail and settled back in, closing his eyes for a comfortable nap.

He sat, perched and waiting, silent as a shadow within the snow, watching the mountain pass below with an intent, almost predatory focus. His long tail gently swished, brushing the blanket of frosty ivory with fur and feathers. Large ears twitched, swiviling to prick toward the faint sounds of large hooves making their dainty, diligent way up the treacherous mountainside. He waited, wings fluttering in eager anticipation.

A small centaur trudged her way through the snow, built steady and solid as any draft, but more pony like in size. Her gleaming bay coat and copper bright hair stood out starkly against the winterscape around her, while concerned green eyes scoured her surroundings. Chiyne was late, and the dragon was never late- he knew how she worried, and given their first meeting had her rescuing him from would be hunters... Her fears weren't entirely unfounded, if she did say so herself.

It was hard, leaving him behind, each and every year. Yet he couldn't leave his snowcapped mountains lest the heat elsewhere claim him, and she could only endure the mountain's chill for so long, nevermind the lack of food and her instincts urging her to wander. It was worse, that first time- she stayed far too long, nursing the then hatchling back to health, viciously protective whenever any would be poachers sought to make a quick buck off her charge. The longer she stayed, however, the weaker she grew, the more she became a liability, rather than anything remotely helpful.

Chiyne eventually was the one to urge her away, flaring his then tiny wings with sad, chirping growls, trying to scare her off. He looked absolutely pitiful, defeated in the snow, when she refused to budge, trusting him too much at that point for fear to ever cross her mind. Yet having the little one cry over her, cold nose pointedly nudging against her showing ribs, sad eyes watching her shiver weakly in the cold that invigorated him... Eventually she left. As much his prompting as pure necessity, but that didn't make it any easier, any more pleasant.

Thus, she returned, again and again, year after year, to meet up with her friend, make sure he was still doing alright, catch up with one another. Yet, he wasn't waiting for her at their meeting spot, and that was concerning.

Something suddenly slammed into her, large and heavy, landing on top of her an causing her legs to buckle, sending both her and her assailant crashing into the snow. She scrambled and flailed, alarmed as she fought to escape, until familiar chirping laughter reached her ears. Finally able to fly on silent wings, the laughing jerk had seen fit to tackle her to the ground, wrapping around and snuggling up to her like an overly affectionate, fluffy snake.

She huffed at him, relaxing with the realization, a pale hand reaching out to scritch behind one of those sensitive, cervine ears, soft smile gracing her lips.

"It's been a while, my friend."

When winter comes and snowfalls, Rufus follows his best friend to warmer lands. It may take weeks or even months, but Rufus doesn't mind. After all, his best friend has been by his side even when he was merely a hatchling. At this point in his life, he trusts his friend with his life. When they finally arrive at the place warm enough to settle down, however, his friend returns into the earth from which he came from. Rufus doesn't mind because his friend always comes back, spines sharper and branches newer every time.

If there was anyone keeping track of this dragon's migration patterns, they would learn she wasn't actually migrating. Not really. It's just that the feathered dragon enjoys winter so much and so far, each year she's spent it with a new family.

Her first year, it was a litter of kittens. Small and fuzzy just like her! The mother cat didn't seem to mind another body joining the nightly snuggle pile, not when the small dragon was as big as she and armed with open eyes and teeth and claws. It was a year of playing and sleeping and growing for all of them, dragon included.

The second year was spent with some raccoons. They slept during the day and ventured out to scavenge and hunt for food. The parents liked the dragon. She was quiet and a skilled hunter already. Her climbing was not a good as theirs but her baby wings helped her up. It was a year of exploring and learning about all the cool food humanoids left behind them in their strange structures. Some interesting, tasty things they leave behind!

Her third winter, after a large growth spurt, the feathered wyrmling is deep in the plains of Festgrath. Enjoying her almost fully functional wings in the company of a large herd of elk. She is close in size and spends the warm afternoons chasing the yearlings across barren fields covered in a thin layer of snow. Her first real run-in with predators is a starving pack of wolves who charged at her and her friends one cold morning. Two bulls in the herd stampeded the wolves first, giving her the confidence to charge and protect her friends.

Her fourth year is spent alone. She ended up in the deserts of Vibrant on a whim-- and she doesn't really look like any of the creatures there. No one wanted to be her friend that winter... not that it was a winter. Very little snow, cold temperatures at night. No blizzards to roll down the non-existent mountains.

The next year is a real treat. She beholdens herself to a grumpy old bear. He doesn't care much for the dragon's company, but she adores him. She follows him around, helping him find food so he can stock up for the long winter's hibernation. Once he does hibernate, she spends his slumbering months sleeping, playing, and having the run of his neck of the woods. She even leads a hunting party of bear hounds away!

This year, she's in Becca. Not that she knows. The feathered dragon stumbles upon a barn filled with cattle and a few ponies. The equines are her same size and don't seem to mind her-- they don't seem to care about much, really. And there is a nest in the barn just for her! It's a cart filled with hay that she rearranges to have a nice snuggle pile.

"Marlene, I think we have a winter visitor!" George calls her from the claimed barn.
