Welcome to the Euphorian Retired Racehorse Project
Euphorian Thoroughbreds are a rare string of the Thoroughbred breed. They come from a single farm simply called “Euphoria” that has horses with mutated genes. These allow them to be able to possess any realistic coat or markings. Everything else about the sub-type is the same. Long, strong legs, a powerful hind, and great speed. Their eyes are soft and the breed is incredibly smart, if not a bit goofy. They love kids and have the rare ability to excel in any discipline. They can grow from 15hh-18hh, though usually somewhere in the middle.
The horses readopted through the Euphorian Retired Racehorse Project are looking for a new loving home and a new job. They’ve tried racing and have either retired or decided the sport wasn’t for them. Either way, they are ready for the next chapter in their life. Some of these horses will come with a little training already, and will have their new discipline already determined. Although others you’ll get to pick how they move forwards!

Show Name: BBR Red Dirt Road
Barn Name: Dusty
Gender: Stallion
Age: 9 years old
Height: 16.2hh
Halter: A nice soft pastel baby blue please!
Discipline: Western pleasure
Competition: Homemade by Jake OwenIt’s been awhile since Dusty had been shipped out to the east coast. He grew up on a farm that belonged to a smaller racing stable out in the Midwest. While he trained for the track, he also doubled as a ranch horse, as a large herd of angus cows shared the property with the race horses. Dusty became a jack of all trades at a young age, and has carried himself as though he has had years of experience. He really appreciates his early life and the things it taught him, and he often thinks about his early days, sometimes missing those times and feeling homesick. His unique upbringing shaped him into the horse he is today, and that‘a reflected within the favorite song chosen for him.

Competition: Put Your Head On My Shoulder by Paul AnkaMackey had arrived at his current home after some unfortunate circumstances. He'd been rescued from a bad storm, far from any stables and with no way to find his previous owner, whoever or wherever they were. He'd been moved about between a few foster homes, eventually finding himself in a quaint little ranch in the northeast. The barn hands there all felt bad for him, so far from home and without anything familiar. Through their days of caring for him and trying to make him feel at home, they usually played music through the barn. Through all the songs they played, all the artists and albums, there was only one song Mackey ever seemed to react to. An older tune by Paul Anka, a sweet love song, was decidedly Mackey's favorite. Anytime the tune would start playing through the stables, he would peek his head out of his stall door, shutting his eyes a bit and seeming entirely focused on enjoying every last note. At the song's end, he would always pull back into his stall, seeming calm compared to his usual nervous and flighty nature. The barn hands decided this must be something he remembered from his old life, and they were always sure to play it every now and then, just for him.

For as long as I've known him, noises have made Capella nervous. His ears never seem to stop in their swiveling, and I've even noticed he is still awake on late stable runs or the earliest morning starts. Any sudden sound makes him start, and he stops in his tracks at any loud or high-pitched noises. A friend of mine suggested playing sounds in the stables to soothe him, but those 'soundscape' videos on Youtube that she suggested left him desperately searching for the birds that sang or the rivers that flowed.
The only thing I could do was try to minimize sounds in the stables - no radios, no cars within 50 feet, soft shoes. But, of course, life gets busy, and there were days where I was too tired to park far away, my phone would be blaring music when I walked into the barn for equipment, or where one of the stable workers flicked on the radio to keep them company.
It was one of those days, after a long journey from out-of-town, that I just unhooked my phone's aux cord and entered the stables, without pausing my music. A slow song from an a capella group floated from the tinny speakers, filling the air of the stables with tight harmonies and beautiful words of true love. And, as I passed his stable, I realized that Capella was actually quiet. No pacing, no small, nervous noises. Quiet. Turning to look at him, I realized that he was listening, his ears trained on my hand. For the first time since he came to me, he was breathing slowly, quietly, peacefully. There were no sudden guitar solos, no blaring choruses, no loud instruments. Just voices singing gently in a true expression of the form. And so, the stallion listened. And, to my amazement, his eyes drifted shut, his whole body relaxing into a doze.
So, I left the song on repeat, leaving my phone balanced on his stable door. Over the coming days, I experimented with other songs he might like, making a playlist of songs for him to relax to. One cheap iPod and speaker later, he had a permanent set up, and has been able to relax into stable life. True Colours will always remain his favourite, though, and if he's having a particularly difficult day, that's the one I'll put on for him!
