There are so many things Heronbrook misses from her life. But she's used to missing things. She's always known the feeling of sacrifice.

...She misses her home. The grounds she walked on as a bumbling kit all the way to a graceful, water-loving warrior. By the time she spent her last breath, though, it had been seasons since she last saw the territories of her home.

The fires that ate through their former forests created a famine none of the three clans recovered from.

So, no. She doesn't quite miss her old home. That wound, as large as it is on her soul, had long since scabbed over.

No matter how thin the bandage still is.

...She misses her family. The family that dwindled around her as she had to watch as her clanmate's ribs grew more prominent. Their faces gaunter. Their spirits dampened. The lights going out in their eyes. And the shadow that never left her nephew's face, not even in death. But, even as her last clanmate died in her arms, it was only seasons after, alone and small in a twoleg's den, that she joined them in the stars. Even with the lives she lost, she, at least, had the time to process.

Where did she go wrong?

...But at heart, she's always been kin with the water, the waves at her back, and the sands of the riverbank shifting under her paws. She thinks, as she wanders the stars now, that she misses the water.

There's water in her last hunting grounds, no doubt, but it's [url]different[/url]. There is no cold shock of that first splash. There is no burn in her legs after a long swim. There is no blinking away water from her irises. There is no [url]feeling[/url].

She misses many things, but this little thing reminds her the most that she'll never get what she lost back. Never.

prompt: Waveclaw loved his mate, Silverwing, so much that he would die for her. And that's exactly what he did. During a battle with a rival Clan, he took a blow for her. Unfortunately, the SummitClan medicine cat was unable to treat him in time, and he died.
Waveclaw enjoys his time in StarClan, catching up with old friends, but nothing can compare to the loss of Silverwing. It aches in his chest, and even though he knows that cats are supposed to be at peace in StarClan, Waveclaw can't be happy without his mate. Every night, he tries to visit her in her dreams, with varying levels of success. But when he can get through to her, Waveclaw reminds his mate that he's just waiting for her to join him in StarClan.

The stars and skies under her paws were comforting but they could never compare to cold dewy grass that night. She remembered waiting by the river bank, shivering from nerves or the cold... she didn't know which. And then there he was. Shining like a second moon through the dark forest his eyes glistened and his lips quivered into a small smile. He slinked towards her carefully, they both looked around to make sure no one was around before bounding over to greet each other.

They did this often, only starclan saw them underneath those branches. She wasn't supposed to see him but every time she saw his face across the river bank she forgot the rules and her heart fluttered.

One night she hadn't been cautious however. A cat from his clan had followed the two. Unbeknownst to them the cat had watched silently, jealousy filling its heart. It had followed Falconleap back and explained all that it saw.

"Please don't tell!" She had pleaded with the golden tabby, "I love him!"

The cat's expression changed, "Fine, tomorrow meet me by the river and we'll figure something out"

The next day Falconleap went to the river and waited. It had rained recently and the river had swelled, it would be too dangerous to cross for a week. And that's when she felt her paws slip from underneather her. She plunged into the water, the last thing she saw was the golden tabby before she was whisked under.

And she never got to say goodbye.


In starclan now she can sometimes close her eyes and imagine the clouds are the river bank. She see's his face each time. Sorrow-filled each night she watches him, longing to just say the words she never got to say.

Smokewhisker's chest swelled with pride- his daughters had come at last to join his Clan. He was sorry that it had to be like this, with their home destroyed and their mother gone. They hadn't seen eye to eye on most things towards the end, but he still cared for the barn cat who had raised his kits. He could imagine how difficult it was for Sage and Willow to lose her.

He couldn't be more proud of his daughters. Sage - Sagestar now - was the leader of JuniperClan. He could tell that she still doubted herself frequently. He wished he could tell her how well she was doing. The Clan was strong and united- her leadership had helped the Clan return to the Code that they had been ignoring for far too long.

And Willow... sweet little Willow had settled into Clan life beautifully as well. Willowsong, as she was called now, was a mother now. Her kits were beautiful and healthy, and brought a light to the JuniperClan camp. She had made a beautiful family and a loving home with the Clan.

It had been bittersweet to see them come here. He was proud that he had been one of the nine cats to grant Sagestar her extra lives as a new leader, but he would have traded it in a heartbeat to be there in person. He had left too soon, too easily. Their mother feared that he was going to take them away, so she told him not to come see them anymore. So he stopped coming.

Still, he had come to watch, just occasionally. From time to time, he would come, no closer than the fenceline that surrounded the barn where they had lived. He never spoke to them- they never even knew he was there. He just came to check in, watch from a distance.

Smokewhisker had always dreamed that someday his girls would choose to come join him in his Clan. He loved watching them now, but he wished that he was there in person, hunting and training beside them, meeting his grandkits, and supporting Sagestar in her role as leader of JuniperClan. But the greencough had taken him a few seasons before the fire that brought his daughters to the Clan. He would have to be content to continue to watch them from a distance.

Shalestreak let out a sigh of content. He felt young and energized— just like his days as a young warrior. The ancestral lands were a peaceful place.

Through his contentment however, a tiny pang of wistfulness seeped in. As an elder, Shalestreak had observed in even the shyest and most quiet kits and apprentices a shining light of enthusiasm and a powerful desire to prove themselves. And though they appeared youthful and full of life, many of the ancestors, even some of the ones who had died young, lacked that fiery spirit.

He missed the crazy antics and goofy personalities of his clan’s youth. He remembered vividly how they would seek him out, begging for stories, their groaning reluctance to check the elders for ticks, and their constant embarrassment over tiny slip ups. He remembered watching litters of cats age from tiny fur-ball kittens to big, strong, warriors who had kittens of their own.

Shalestreak smiled fondly at these memories. Of all the things he missed from his past life, the young were what he missed the most.

The feel of the grass and leaves under his paws, running like the Roaring River flows, going to Guardian Island for the last time... He lived a good life. Yet, Novapelt couldn't help but miss doing what he'd been born to do. Being a runner was more than just what he did, it was an important part of who he was. He took pride in being able to run messages faster than any cat before him. His memory was just as sharp, and helped the clan numerous times. Even when he officially "retired" to be an elder after his injury, he still helped where he could.

Mentoring the young runners only soothed the burning desire. Oh he'd grumble about them, and their teasing, but all knew that the apprentices looked at the legendary runner with awe. Even the most braggart of apprentices was humbled when they heard how fast he completed his Task. Time crawled and sped up. Soon, he knew it was his time. He longed to go back to the great Guardian Isle, to look up at the stars and see into what he'd become. While he climbed up to the top, he felt as if he was climbing up to join the ancestors with each step. The stars were shining, and the meteors streaked across the sky on that night.

It felt as if the ancestors were welcoming him among them. One last time, he looked out over the river towards his home in this life. He would never be completely ready to leave this place. Novapelt felt as if he still had so much life to live, even as his body failed him. More than anything, he wished he could do one last run. Feel the leaves of past seasons under his paws, his blood roaring in his ears like the great river.
