North staggered limply through the forest, drenched in sweat. His eyes, glittering orbs of pain, cast a light in front of him, green like the freshest grass. He clenched his teeth as his bleeding paw was impaled by yet another stick, jagged and sharp, like splintered glass. He searched the humid forest for a patch of dirt, a small clearing of leaves, anything that he could lie down on. Finally, he spotted a small area that seemed good enough to rest on. As he neared, the acrid scent of rotting prey filled his nostrils, and he batted at his face. Of course, that sent a bolt of pain through his paw. North yelped weakly, his tail shuddering as struggled to stay upright. After he caught his breath, he heaved himself eagerly toward the pile of surprisingly soft leaves. He set his hurt paw tenderly on the pile, and using his good paw, cleared out a small nest. He nestled in and shrugged an itchy leaf off his shoulder blade, which jutted out at an odd angle. His wounds pulsed painfully, and he had to close his eyes to be able to withstand it. Now, as he was tucked nicely into the leaves, his mind began to wander.
Why had he done it? After all, the she-cat had merely won his heart. That didn't mean she deserved to switch with North. Be sent to a place where things were so much better. Have him die so she could inhabit the embers of his life and live her own. She had done bad before. A lot of bad. Why had he been so stupid? There was nothing for him here except pain and suffering. Never mind the injuries he had sustained trying to get her to be alive again. Love wasn't a sure thing; a long and happy life was, however. At least, it used to be. North had no idea if he'd be able to go back. Probably not. He'd just done something completely forbidden.
Anxiety bubbled in his hollow chest as he thought of what the she-cat would do. He'd fallen in love because of her evil charm, quick wit, and wild thoughts. Who knew what she could do when in a land full of live, good cats? Another flame of torturous pain seared through his body, and he took in a ragged breath as his paw pulsed again, hungry for a second of normalcy. Nothing seemed right in this forest. And even though he was here because of the cat he fell in love with, he also knew that it had something to do with the "not right" growing inside of him.
