alias. EFF-13 | name. effie | gender. female
the radio station was dingy and rundown, shelves tipped precariously into one another and records sprawled across the floors, skidding atop each other, likely scratched to no end. static crackled from another room, an old radio sitting on a rickety wooden desktop, a vast window at the front of it, allowing one to peer out onto an endless expanse of nothingness.
dusty orange sand was swept into the air by a gust of hot wind, twisting it into a small whirlwind.
a girl sat at a chair on the desk, a pair of headphones wedged over her ears, black hair messy with the same orange-red dirt substance as outside. she was writing something; a list, a playlist, really, and her handwriting was cramped and tiny as she neared the end of the small spiral notebook.
she feared nobody would find her here.
and so these songs, these songs that she'd collected from the records now on the floors, these were her legacy.
mars was an unforgiving planet, it seemed, and her radio had been out for days.
she breathed slowly, her inhale shaky.
she pressed the green [ P L A Y ] button.
[ CLICK ME ]
she gasped, the headphones clattering to her feet, still emitting faint music.
there.
again, a shadowed figure crossing the terrain before her. the figure was small, not much larger than effie, and had it's head down as it approached.
effie flew down the stairs, flinging herself around the railings, her eyes massive. when she'd been selected to go on the mars mission, to expand earth's territory, to see if this planet was livable, she was told that she would always be connected with the radio, would always have a contact.
she hadn't seen or heard from anyone in over thirty days.
she reached the door, the heavy metal crank rusty, and flung it open.
the person who stood before her blinked.
"who're you?" the alien asked, wringing his hands together.
effie flung herself at him, embracing him with a sob.
"why are you squeezing me with your body?"
the girl blinked at him.
"i thought i was going to be lost forever."

The sound hum of the computer rung in Lola’s ears. Her face had a soft blue glow that shone from the screen.
Tap, Tap came from the desk as Lola clicked her nails against the wood.
