About the Breed

Boer Spaniels are a recent breed created by crossing Boykin Spaniels, English Cocker Spaniels, English Springer Spaniels, and American Water Spaniels to create a curly-coated Spaniel breed with naturally bobbed tails. They're a medium-sized breed with soft eyes and warm fur, perfectly suited to be companion or working dogs with their intelligent and docile personalities. Some Boers are being bred for service or therapy dog work while others love the water and are adept at swimming, perfect for hunting and sporting work. No matter why you love the breed, though, Boers are guaranteed to be loyal companions for life! They're gentle around children and cats, are full of love, and can occasionally be couch potatoes with their calm demeanor.

Their coats continuously grow out rather than shedding so grooming your Boer regularly is a must. There is a "standard" cut for the breed that most owners prefer, but some Boers sport shorter cuts while others are grown out for a showier appearance. Boers with naturally long tails are rare within the breed since the initial gene pool was chosen for their bobbed tails, but their existence is not faulted and is seen as a natural variation. Docking their tails is illegal within their country of origin and such an action would result in a permanent ban from every kennel club associated with the breed. Similarly, cropped ears are also not allowed, although pointed ears are extremely rare for Spaniel breeds to begin with.

Community Rules
(Updated 03/20/2025)

01. This is a closed species, meaning that only staff members may create designs and adopts outside of approved customs and artist entries. Official linearts are to be used for Boers only.

02. Customs are considered void until approved by a staff member. Artist entries can be approved as customs with approval from the artist, otherwise they are not allowed to be used as characters within the species. If the creator of a design wants to use the design as an OC outside of the species, it must be transferred to a different lineart first and the old reference will be made void.

03. Do not steal another user's Boer or scam a user for ownership of their Boer. This includes copying a Boer's design. Theft or scams will be taken very seriously.

04. Boers can be traded for other Boers, C$, CS pets/items, or non-Boer characters (as long as the rules of that character/closed species allow trading in this way). They can also be gifted to users for free. Sales for real currency are not permitted at this time. Users must be notified of breeding slots at the time of the trade or gift. All trades and gifts are considered void unless the users involved notify an archivist of the official ownership change on the Archive Updates page. Users can opt to have staff readopt their Boers if they no longer want them and don't want to host a competition themselves.

05. Be respectful and kind to other community members. Bullying or harassment of any kind is not be tolerated. Message a staff member if there is an issue. If the issue involves a staff member, you can message mars instead about the situation.

06. Do not beg to be a staff member. We will open applications publicly when we're looking to hire (:

07. Respect the hosts of competitions. Be aware of end dates and don't nag the host over the judging. Don't try to persuade or guilt trip the host into picking your form. If it has been over a month since the end date, please let another staff member know.

08. Competitions, re-adoptions, and giveaways — both official and held by the community — must not be rigged and must be judged within one month of their end date. These contests cannot be cancelled unless it is a community-led contest where there are no entries at the time of the end date.

09. It's okay to help users in the community (and the staff certainly appreciate it!), but we ask that you do not act like a staff member or give out incorrect information to community members. Please allow staff to do their jobs. Users could get warnings if they mini-mod to an extent where it becomes a problem.

10. Errors found within the genotypes or phenotypes of existing Boers are subject to be corrected by staff members. This will affect all future breedings, even if slots were already given away. If a user is negatively affected by this change, they may contact mars to be given something in exchange for the slot.

11. If you break the rules, you will get up to 3 warnings depending on the severity of the offenses. On the next offense, you will be banned. Banned users may not participate in Boers.

12. Boers can be taken away from banned users (both from the species and from the site) and readopted. Breeding slots of those Boers that were given away before the ban will still be considered valid.

13. Rules are subject to change, but not without notification.

I'm the current owner of the species and (as of right now) the only staff member 0": I'm working diligently to get the species back up and running again, but with the time that has passed and the current changes to the species, I moved all of the old staff members under the "former staff" section since I don't know if anyone is still around or wants to return. former staff can dm me and we can discuss everything if they want to come back <3

Q: Do Boer Spaniels have docked tails?
 A: Boer Spaniels have a natural, safe, bobbed tail mutation. I do not support tail docking or ear cropping for ethical reasons so I want to separate that from the species as much as possible!

Q: Can I give my custom cropped ears?
 A: You can give a Boer ears that look like cropped ears, but they must not be called "cropped", rather a "natural pointed or small ear mutation". I do not support tail docking or ear cropping for ethical reasons so I want to separate that from the species as much as possible!

Q: What are the policies for injuries and disabilities?
 A: Anyone can give their Boer a physical or mental disability (blindness, deafness, missing limbs, scars, autism, etc), but in the case of edits to their reference, it requires approval on a case-by-case basis. Message me here or on Discord with some information about why you'd like to do this with your character. Please note that injuries cannot be passed down to pups.

Q: Can I claim an artist entry as my custom?
 A: Yes, you can! Ask the artist for permission to claim, and if they agree, ask a CS mod to move the thread under the customs thread. Make sure to link me so I can approve of the custom and get it added to the archive since it could be buried under older customs where I can't see it!

Q: Do I have to develop my Boers as dogs? Can they have human or anthro forms?
 A: You're welcome to develop your Boers however you see fit. I personally have feral and human forms for all of my Boers, including AUs in different time periods. All I ask is that you don't make them have magical powers.

Q: Can any Boer be a show dog, or is it restricted to the best examples of the breed like in real life?
 A: Any Boer can take the show dog route in our upcoming ARPG! Colorful dogs or dogs with disabilities are welcome.
