Skepluvi - 130 - Event 023

Intake Report: Missing Back Right Foot [Prosthetic Replacement] | Crop Scarring On Rump | Scarring On Face, Muzzle, Neck, Wrists, Feet/Palms, & Tail
"This big jack appears to have once been a very prized racer. They were in great body condition and seemed fairly well trained, though they are definitely a bit headstrong and have a habit of dashing gates and getting into trouble with their oddly high-energy personality. The team seems pretty certain that the skepluvi was pulled off the track and tossed into the shed after severely injuring their back foot, likely during a race at some point. It seems that sadly they had been run anyways, well up until the injury began to really affect their 'performance' on the track. The injury was never worked with or cared for, and by the time we had gotten to the poor skepluvi their foot was just a mound of infected and painfully swollen tissue. The joints in their toes were completely detached, and a shattered bit of their heel bone was sticking out of the skin. Unfortunately there was just no saving the foot, especially since it was impossible to get this wild jack to sit still long enough for it to heal. So our veterinary team decided on a full amputation with an bone-fused prosthetic replacement. Of course the skepluvi was up and walking within just a few days of the procedure, so the task now will be finding a way to keep them calm and get their intense energy out without allowing them to run or put too much pressure on the prosthetic as it heals. If their new handler can't keep this bouncing jack off their feet for at least a few weeks, there's a chance the prosthetic could reject, leaving them to a sad fate. So it's all up to you now - are you up to the task of getting this brave skepluvi to heal in time?"

Taming Prompt: I went extremely overboard again :what:
When her next rescue Skepluvi turned up Ranea was both excited and a little apprehensive. As soon as you looked in the jacks eyes you could see he had a spirit as bright and lively as his red fur and spikes. He looked around and at people like they were the next exciting toy he got to interact with, and to him that's all we must seem for he was big, even for a skepluvi, he was easily 7’5..

That wouldn't discourage Ranea though, she couldn't help but grin at the way the skepluvis eyes lit up when he saw the vast open spaces of her ranch. He was a racer through and through, pawing at the ground waiting for the starting gun. Ranea decided then his name would be Peros, meaning enthusiasm.

After a moment he seemed to realise he was only being lead into stables, and that was not to his liking at all. He started pulling at the lead, dragging the person holding it a couple of steps until Ranea had to quickly grab it as well before he went tearing off across the sandy plains.

Then, just as suddenly as he started he stopped, making a low keening sound that seemed to stab into Ranea’s heart. He twisted his neck down, and stared down at his foot. Or where his foot would've been, had it not been replaced. Hoping to distract him Ranea grabbed a couple of palm leaves from her storage area. This distracted him long enough to get him into a spare stall, though he seemed to stumble a few times on his still weakened legs.

Once he’d finished his treat he proceeded to investigate his new lodgings, everything got a sniff. The walls, the floor, the bedding, the feed and water troughs. And then once that was done, Ranea. She couldn't help but be relieved at his lack of fear as he tried to discover the depths of her pockets, and the intricacies of hair. Though she had to stop him when he went for a nibble. With satisfaction that he was getting comfortable in his new home she went back to her cottage and to bed.

When she returned to the stables in the morning everything was a different story. Somehow, despite all odds, he had managed to get through the small side gate that let her from the tack area into his stall. And now, just as he had investigated his stall he appeared to have investigated the tack room. Stuff that had been hooked up on the wall and on the table was on the floor, and over the dividing wall, and in his pen, and in his troughs and somehow, somehow hooked over the roof beams.

As soon as Peros spotted Ranea gaping by the door he chirruped a muffled greeting, going to hop over the boxes that surrounded what used to be a pile of sacks containing chicken food (but were now torn up bags covered in chicken food). However, his legs were not strong enough for this and he fell, luckily still onto the chicken food rather than the hard concrete. Gasping Ranea moved closer, and helped the large creature up as much as she could.

Once he was up again, though both were panting a little, Ranea moved one of the boxes to the side and lead him back to his stall through the larger stall gate. Making sure the side gate was closed extra tightly. She’d secure it further later. For now her priority was keeping the skepluvi from getting bored and hurting himself again.

She brought in some more toys, a ball on a string she tried to the ceiling (so he couldn't stand on it), a squeaky toy, some large scratching poles. This kept him occupied for another little while as she worked on putting more boards across the top gate that let Poros look out to the outside. Since he'd managed to get through the small side gate she wasn't going to let him have any chance of trying to jump across the gate. Then she opened it up and let him look to the outside. His eyes lit up again, but he must've seen there was no way to get out so remained relatively calm. All in all he was pretty obedient, as long as it wasnt you and a rope keeping him from racing across sandy dunes.

Ranea decided then to pull out the big guns against the boredom that seemed to tempt Peros into destruction. She whistled calling Mira and Vanya, her other Skepluvis to come over. They didn't take long as, as soon as Peros sensed they were near he started calling to them. Miras responded to his call first, while Vanya came closer behind and greeted Renea first. Then the three started introducing themselves to each other. Ranea was surprised how well it went, as the three ended up grooming each other, though Peros and Vanya seemed to have to remind Mira repeatedly about the sensitive nature of their scars.

It was a tiring couple of weeks, as Ranea had to use every book, website and brain cell of hers to come up with new toys and games for Peros that would entertain him but not put too much pressure on his leg.
His favourites seemed to be simplified version of tag and a quick game that to her was supposed to be swingball but to him seemed to be how many times can you hit Ranea in the head with a soft ball attached to the ceiling.

The true reward came the day she got to let him out properly, (this was after many short walks were ‘Heel!’ was actually code for ‘stop trying to drag me half a mile’). He was so surprised he just stood at the open gate staring out, wondering why his halter was missing.

This was only momentary though, as he let out what could only be described as a trumpet of victory and ran as if his life depended on it. He chased the queens and raced the fennec foxes and the lizards and even seemed to try and race a bird. Eventually he lay down sweating and slobbering like anything and had a dust bath. That night, when he returned to his stall he was well and truly tuckered out.
