Skepluvi - 118 - Event 017

Postby AMemeAmongMen » Mon Sep 09, 2019 8:38 am

Intake Report: No Visible Injuries
"There was nothing quite as terrifying as having an 800 pound animal trying to pick you up by the back of the neck. Especially more than once. In a row. The Jack was amazingly sweet, almost overly affectionate. He had all the makings of a breeder, the perfect personality, beautiful coloring. The problem was, Jacks didn't get to raise their babies for more than a couple days in this industry before they were taken away to be sold as pets or tortured into becoming racers from the moment they were big enough to be able to carry the heavy tack of the trade. Many breeding Jacks displayed traits such as this, and tend to see whatever species shows them kindness as their rittens instead. A muzzle was used in order to get them to stop attempting to pick up volunteers by their scruffs, after more than one incident where they gave a nice nip instead, since humans are quite soft and don't have the tough skin the Skepluvias do. He was a charm otherwise, easy to load into the trailer, calm, gentle. Though he did have quite the habit of knocking the volunteers over as he tried to rub his body against theirs in a display of affection. This Jack would really benefit from a ritten or two to care for properly. "

Taming Prompt: When Avon Skepluvia Farms put out an urgent call seeking prospective adopters for a rescued young jack in such miraculously good physical and mental health considering how he was acquired, the flood of interested people coming to visit and assess him every day was no surprise. Less expected, however, was the person who was, in the end, the one for the adoptee. All the staff and regular visitors to Avon ranch while he boarded there were charmed by him and speculation about who would take him in was the hottest topic of barn gossip. Everyone had their own favourite candidate, from the doting semi-retired
rancher with decades of experience training and breeding jacks to the up-and-coming young racer who matched the jack’s boundless energy and boisterousness, but no one would have guessed Mark Lee - at least at first.

Reaching out to Mark about the jack was almost an afterthought - while he certainly had the experience and resources to take on the rescue, his business was booming and he was thoroughly preoccupied with keeping up with the demand for covers from his prestigious stud jacks and expanding. His first meeting with the jack was nothing special - he asked the standard questions out of courtesy, nothing indicating a serious interest, and then “assessed” the jack’s temperament and abilities. Truthfully, it seemed like he came out just to have a bit of fun playing around with the skepluvi, playing fetch and giving him generous food rewards. But he came back again - then again, and again. Mark started calling the skepluvi Kürbis after his avid love for pumpkin and butternut squash, which Mark always made sure to have plenty on hand. Still, the ambitious young professional wouldn’t admit any serious interest in taking on the rescue - he was dedicated to focusing on only top-quality skepluvias, he told himself even as he fell ever more enamoured with Kürbis, and had no time to train and breed a green jack with no pedigree.

The staff at Avon, of course, had other ideas. As it became apparent how well Kürbis and Mark were bonding, they were thrilled at the prospect of an adopter who could properly train and socialize Kürbis, easily handling his rough play. Dropping increasingly more pointed hints and eventually openly probing Mark to adopt, he finally ended up the official owner of Kürbis with no idea of how a for-fun visit had ended up with such a big commitment of time and money to train a young jack that did not at all fit in with his business goals, plans to breed and raise rittens of the rescue, and above all such an overwhelming love for the source of all his newfound troubles.

Kürbis continued boarding at Avon, both since he was quite happy and settled in by the time his adoption was finalized and because his busy owner could use all the help caring for him he could get. While he looked into possibilities for future breedings, Mark would not risk giving the responsibility of caring for a vulnerable young ritten to Kürbis until he had mellowed out and had gained a better understanding of boundaries, manners, and his own strength. In the meantime, he experimented with homing an old show cow with Kürbis as a companion. The two bonded marvellously, Kürbis clearly delighted to have such a strong “ritten” to take care of and old Ivy just enjoying the company of a new “herd”, unphased by Kürbis’s over-enthusiastic hover-parenting, and are seldom seen apart.
