Right now, the points are just to judge what rarity each adopt is. Customs will be common, but a currency and/or item system may be implemented in the future. Adopts will be mostly common, with the occasional uncommon and maybe rare.

How do you get points

For now, there is no way to earn them. The point system is just to identify rarities, and customs to non-staff can only be common (unless won in a giveaway). However, there will be a currency system in the future, where you'll be able to save up for certain items or customs. This will be introduced in the grand opening event, but it may be a little while until it's up and running! :)
