This was it, this was our big break. Finally after years of being "Youtube Ghost Hunters" and begging for locations to investigate, we finally got contact from a fan in a village called Pluckley. If you don't know where that is, neither did we; turns out, it's in the United Kingdom, of all places! I'd always wanted to travel, and for our first request to already be international?? Killian rarely shows emotion, but even he was beaming when we got the call!

While the village had been investigated many times before us, and was well-known (at least, well-claimed) to be haunted by multiple spirits, that's not what caught Killian's attention. We were called to investigate the surrounding forest, not Pluckley Village: the Dering Woods. Locally and among other ghost hunters it was known as "The Screaming Woods", and for good reason; in the dead of night, horrible screams would emanate from the forest with no discernable source. It's a haunting, terrifying sound, especially considering what it might actually be.

Our crew of three jumped on the first available flight and met with our contact there, a man by the name of Edwhen. He'd been hiking through one of the trails, in the middle of the, day when something had screamed right in his ear. Edwhen shakily said that it had been only about 6 feet behind him, and he knew without a doubt that no one else was in his immediate area. He told us the story, and even marked the exact location on our map, but he absolutely refused to step foot inside the woods. I could see Andes shiver slightly, the male bobcat glancing at Killian anxiously. The gothic Kalon? His eyes had focused forward into that predator stare; he was ready to investigate. That night, we geared up and prepared our "attack plan", as Killian liked to call it; the forest was large and dark, so we quickly agreed to stick together at all times. There would be no solo investigations on this one. From the very moment we entered that forest, the feeling of being watched was almost unbearable. I couldn't make a move without feeling like someone was hovering over me, watching my every move. Normally I'm not one to be easily scared, but even this kind of oppressive darkness had me uneasy.

The first part of the investigation went pretty smoothly; a word on the OVILUS here, an unexplained light anomaly a few moments later, some rustling in the bushes caused by who-knows-what. It was far less active than we'd been expecting, so we carefully made our way back to where Edwhen had a spirit scream at him. The paths were confusing and not well-marked, so finding the correct trail entrance took some time. Luckily their expert navigator was on hand; Andes adjusted his glasses and worked his magic; soon enough, they were hitting landmark after landmark, bee-lining for the faded red circle on the paper map. We were on a roll until a sudden orb flashed across the trail in front of us, making us all freeze in our tracks. We were almost there...

Suddenly Killian reached into my messenger bag, pulling one of the devices out from its padded pocket. With practiced precision he flicked a switch and baselined the device, filling the eerily silent forest with static white noise. His voice on top of the sound made the whole situation feel like something out of a horror movie. "If there are any spirits in the area, this is a device called the Spirit Box. If you come up and talk into it, we will be able to hear you. Many have felt you, some have heard your screams. Why are you still here?" I swear I could hear my own heart beating in my ears, just loud enough to compete with the Spirit Box. There was a long pause as we continued closer to the crossroads. Suddenly my eyes saw the slightest flicker of a lantern, and I regarded the abandoned object with a strange sense of pity and protectiveness. It was thrown on the ground haphazardly, not even attached to the nearby post like it should have been. I went to move towards it, but Killian's voice broke me out of my fascinations. "Is someone here?"

"I'm here."

Suddenly the energy of the woods hit us all like a freight train, and we stared at the Spirit Box incredulously. The female voice that came through sounded so sad and desperate that we recoiled. "What is your name, spirit?"

"Aiy... ana..."

"Sounded like she said Aiyana," I murmured, and both Killian and Andes nodded. We continued to ask questions for the next hour, trying to find out who - or what - the spirit was. Slowly the responses began to taper off, and I found myself growing worried. Even with the EM Pump running on full charge, a device created to provide energy for spirits to allow them to communicate (at least in theory), we could still detect her voice getting weaker. "She must be getting tired," I murmured sadly, though I wasn't completely sure why I was feeling as such. Maybe she was channeling through me? Andes was the sensitive one, but...

Suddenly the OVILUS' electronic voice broke the resulting silence, and gave us one last message over two words: LANTERN, then TRAPPED. We all stared at the lantern incredulously, and in that split second I made my choice. Picking up the slightly rusted lantern, I vowed that I would clean it up, and we'd find a way to help her move on. I turned to see both Killian and Andes looking at me with total shock, but my resolve did not waiver one bit. "I'm taking her with us," I said matter-of-factly. "It's the least we can do."

Prompt Response:
Lysander’s feet hurt. He was cold, and his eyes were drooping, and the maybe-possibly-cursed thing he was supposed to be delivering was definitely freaking him out. He shuffled along the dirt path, one hand clutching the strap of his satchel, the other holding a small lantern. The silvery metal and pink flame- achieved by way of a spell he didn’t really understand- marked him as a Courier. A member of the Guild of Carriers. Off-limits to robbers, unless they wanted to suffer the wrath of the Guild’s mages. Tasked with the transport of rare and precious (and, as in this case, decidedly creepy) artifacts all across the realm.

Lysander, at this point, could care less about robbers. All he cared about was reaching the inn he was supposed to stay at. He shivered, tugging the collar of his coat up as far as he could to shield his face. He was pretty sure he had to be getting close at this point.

Lysander was a good Courier. He was quick, agile, and trustworthy. He had a good sense of direction and could read maps well. That was why he was the youngest Courier to be fully initiated to the Guild in about a decade. Most of his former fellows- apprentice carriers- wouldn’t see full membership to the guild for another year or two. Normally that fact would warm Lysander from the inside out with a swell of pride. Tonight, though, he just flattened his ears and scowled as a chilly night breeze buffeted him, thinking wistfully of the warm dormitory he’d had back at the Guild’s headquarters.

He scanned the path in front of him. Dusty, rolling roadway through middle-of-nowhere farmland. Lysander supposed that during the daytime it was probably quite picturesque. As things stood, this farmland was standing between him and some much-needed rest, so he was justified in heaping judgment upon it.

But there- a speck of light in the distance! Not white candlelight or red firelight- it was a pale pink flame, matching his own. To be able to see it from this distance, Lysander supposed it had to be pretty big. He knew what it was- a lantern. One of the lanterns hung at inns along common Courier routes. He quickened his pace, spurred into faster movement by the sight of that beckoning pink flame.

Almost there.

late night writing blurb- might clean it up if I have time tomorrow. :>
notes though!! def. got a story in mind.

--the thing hes' carrying is definitely cursed and definitely very sketchy
--he might get blasted with some bad-curse energy
--there are definitely people out there trying to get it from him bc he is, in Fact, unknowingly delivering it into the hands of someone Bad and Sinister
--engages in a game of chase with bounty hunter(s) before finally catching up
--by now he's sick of the stupid cursed scroll-thing and accepts their explanation p. easily.
--and then!! more game of chase, this time with bounty hunter sidekick/tentative ally?, running from Outraged guild members who don't get the Implications of 'what if he'd made the delivery after all'. Also minions of the Bad and Sinister dude who is upset that he didn't get his mail.

Enchanting. In a night so dark, a single light, far in the distance.... Is enchanting. Despite what they may will their paws are carried softly and mindlessly. The light draws them in

As soon as Zia saw the lantern in the distance, she leapt up from the forest ground where she had been crouching. Squinting to get a better look, she watched as the light bobbed up and down, almost as if hanging from a tail. As it got closer, she couldn't help but feel hope. Could it be her?

Zia stood perfectly still, trying to stay patient, but ended up giving up and running towards the light as fast as she could. Her paws barely hit the ground as she sprinted towards the source. "I'm coming," she whispered, "I'm coming".

As she ran, the silhouette became more in focus, allowing her to see more and more details. She followed the forest path, beginning to slow down. Her sharp eyes - aided by the latern hanging on her own tail - carefully observed the kalon.

It was as Zia watched the figure that she realized with a pang that is was not the one she was hoping for. Disappointment filled the empty space that had seconds ago been filled with hope. She blinked back tears, cursing herself for getting her own hopes up.

As she stood there miserably, the kalon finally reached her. A lantern hung from their mouth - not their tail. They were certainly older than Zia, though it was too dark to see much about their appearance.

"Hello?" they said.

"Hi," replied Zia softly, reminding herself that it wasn't this kalon's fault that they weren't who she was hoping for.

"I seem to be a little lost on this path. Could you possibly give me directions?"

Zia nodded. She knew the forest well enough. There wasn't enough light for her to draw a map, so instead she gave them detailed instructions that would lead them to the nearest town. "I'll come back with you, actually," she offered. It won't hurt to get back there before sunrise, she thought to herself.

The kalon thanked her profusely. Zia simply shrugged, telling them it was no problem. Neither of them spoke as they walked together, which suited Zia just fine. As she walked, her disappointment began to fade away. There were worse things that could happen than helping a lost kalon, she reasoned.

"Don't worry, sister," she said quietly, "I'll find you soon."
