Euphorian Thoroughbred #E005

Postby gr3ystones » Mon Aug 19, 2019 6:26 am

Welcome to the Fallen Oaks Farm event!
It is here that an illegal Euphorian Thoroughbred breeding operation was shut down by local authorities. All of the mares, stallions, and of age foals are in need of homes. There will also be some mares that still have their foals that need to be taken care of. Euphorian lovers from all over have come together to get homes for all of the animals. They've brought giant trailers and are ready and waiting to bring home a bunch of new faces. But before adopting, they must visit the trailer parking site.

Show Name: Run The Show
Barn Name: Milly
Age: (when fully grown) 5 years
Discipline: Dressage
Halter: Turquoise
How You Calmed Her: Milly was hiding under a porch the whole time the rescue of the other horses were happening. It wasn't until the K-9 unit were barking at the porch that someone from West Coast Equestrian Center came over to investigate. The filly was frightened and shaking under the porch. She had barely any weight to her. Each time someone tried to reach under and get her, she would move further back, until she was huddled in a small corner. Eventually, the person from WCEC crawled under the porch and gently nudged her out from under it. The filly immediately headed for some nearby tall grass. The WCEC crew slowly went after her, this time with a few sugar cubes in hand. One member of the crew slowly approached her, a hand with two sugar cubes out in front of her. The filly was starving, and could smell the sugar cubes. The filly slowly got to her feet and cautiously approached the person. When she realized it was okay, she ate the sugar cube out of her hand. The filly eventually got comfortable with the crew member, and followed her back to the trailer, where she was given fresh hay and ice cold water.

How You Calmed Her: I walked over to survey the foals, and spotted a precious little filly. Her eyes captivated me, for it seemed they'd seen so much yet only been open for so long. I knew I needed to have this little girl, she was the kind of horse that needed comfort and care. This filly however, was not one to easily be brought home with me. She was tossing her head and stomping around. I needed to bring her to my trailer, but this was going to serve quite the challenge. I watched her for a bit, seeing that she didn't like to be near a crowd of people. She also didn't like sudden movements, which I observed from someone try to grab her lead when she seemed to calm. This in mind, I determined I needed to have everyone nearby move back while I calmed her, then slowly grabbed her lead. Not to hard right? Well actually, i'm not so sure. The nearby people did all gladly agreed and walked to observe horses farther away from this little filly. I watched her buck around and neigh for a while. Once she didn't seem so jumpy, I entered the pen. Keeping a distance between us, a softly coo'ed to her. She only got wilder. I tried to observe her and figure out if anything else was triggering such a response from her. I noticed something else, she was skinny. Really skinny, the other horses were all skinny from mistreatment but she was extremely skinny. She must be hungry. I knew she didn't seem to like people, as she got scared around them. I decided that I could use this to help calm her so that I could further help her. I left the pen and retrieved a carrot. Slowly entering the pen once more, I got within a few feet of her. She stomped and neigh'd, so I once again softly murmured to her trying to make her less jumpy. It helped more than last time, but she still wasn't comfortable with me. Slowly grabbing the carrot, I offered it to her. She didn't want near me, but that carrot tempted her. She was scared of the person, but then there was a big tasty carrot with them. After some hesitance, she reached out and nibbled on the carrot. It was delicious! She wanted more. She walked closer and began to chomp down on the carrot. Before I knew it the carrot was inside her stomach. I slowly reached out my hand, taking her lead into my grasps. I had done it! Slowly walking her out of the pen, a fellow rescuer kindly handed me another carrot. I thanked them graciously, and used the carrot to help get her to the trailer. We reached the trailer, but the carrot was eaten. The filly got a little nervous, but then I showed her that more food and water lay inside. She was hesitant and tossed her head a bit, neighing her concern. Eventually, I got her inside the trailer from the temptation of food. Inside I gently rubbed her nose, and let her eat some more. This beautiful sky eyed girl was going to become a strong beautiful mare, nothing could stop that now. I closed the trailer, an off we headed back home where she would thrive. (555)

How You Calmed Her:
Just by looking at this youngster, I could tell I wouldn’t even be able to get her near the trailer without her panicking. Therefore, having Godiva waiting in the trailer to soothe the rescue horses was useless in this case. I headed out of the barn and back to the trailer to get some of the extra grain I always keep in case of emergencies. I also stuffed a couple of Godiva’s treats in my pocket for extra incentive.

I stepped back into the crumbling barn, then slowly slide open the stall door of the terrified filly. She immediately bolted into the opposite corner, cowering. I shut the door behind me as slowly as I had opened it, and then gently lowered myself onto the ground. The floor was absolutely disgusting, but I knew there would be no other way to earn this foal’s trust while standing over her. A pair of jeans could always be washed, anyway.

A handful of grain sat in my palms, hand outstretched away from my body. It didn’t matter how long it took, but I was hopeful that eventually the filly would take the bait and come over to eat. I sat quietly, making sure not to stare at her.

It felt like I was sitting forever. My legs felt like they were falling asleep, but I didn’t want to move and ruin and sort of calmness or trust that had been silently build. I was starting to zone out, my mind wandering away from me, that is, until I felt whiskers brushing against my hand. I smiled a little, knowing the little filly was finally desensitized by my presence bright to come over and investigate. I felt gentle little nibbles as the grain began to disappear from my hand. I slowly began to look up and at the foal, and she did not spook. As the grain was running out, I carefully pulled out a couple small treats I had stashed in my pocket with my other hand. I held them out, and she took them too. I began speaking to her, softly and calmly. I slowly reached out to put a flat hand on her neck, and though she flinched, she did not run. Gently, I began to run my hand down her neck, giving her small pets. I could feel the tension beginning to exit her body. The filly was finally calm, and seemed to trust me, at least a little bit. Trust enough to allow me to get her in the trailer and on her way to her new life.

    How You Calmed Her:

The morning had been chaos. Mud, sweat, and even blood was peppered on my barn jeans. A subtle ring echoed within my head, bubbling up to the forefront of my mind in those few moments that I had a spare second of peace. It was during this moment of ringing, white-noise silence, that I noticed a young foal cowering within the crowd of anxious adults. The white noise ceased—it was a trampling waiting to happen.

A click of my tongue was enough to make the foal—a filly, it seemed—bolt further within the crowd. I grasped my horse’s reins to catch the youngling before any other painful accidents occurred this day. Riding atop my horse, Deville, the crowds of lost horses were cut with ease. The filly was determined not to be, or perhaps just terrified to be, caught, but alas, even she was halted by the tall, metal bars of the corrals.

Now in a less crowded, and thankfully less dangerous part of the corral, she turned to face us. Her tail tucked immediately between her lithe legs, and her ears fell back to her neck. She whined for her mother, but no horse came to her rescue.

I dismounted, trying to seem more approachable, but it seemed as if nothing could calm her discontent with the situation. For a moment, the buzzing within my ears overtook my hearing—but then, silence.

    An idea.

My truck! I jumped through the bars of the corral and made one mad dash to my truck. This morning I had been grocery shopping; the eggs, milk, flour, and most importantly, molasses still remained in my back seat!

One horse in my life had been so fascinated by food, and I could only hope that this young filly was the same. Grasping the jar of molasses in hand, I ran back to the corral. Upon my return, the filly pinned her ears again. I raised the jar, shaking it to grab her attention; alas, the filly remained unamused. She wasn’t whining, but she sure wasn’t whinnying with joy, either. I uncapped the molasses, which elicited the slightest of responses: her ears ever-so-slightly pricked forward. A spark of hope emerged in my heart—maybe, just maybe, there was a chance. Still, her stance was tense, as if she was prepared to flee at the slightest moment.

I set the opened jar on the ground, turning my back to ease the pressure upon her. I perceived the smallest rustle, and unless I was dreaming, I thought a bit of sand kicked up right by me. Subtly, I cricked my neck to glance at the filly; she had changed positions! A few steps from the jar, she sat sniffing suspiciously. She was interested—and this could work. I etched towards her, as inconspicuously as possible, until I sat a foot or two away from the jar. She remained in place, which was a good sign, if you asked me.

Delicately, I dipped my fingers within the jar of syrupy molasses and outstretched it towards her, closing my eyes and turning my head. And I... felt a breath! A peek towards the filly showed her, standing before me with only the slightest tremble in her step. She took the leap and began to lick the molasses. She had hope, at last; this filly would see another day after this horrible accident. And all it took to tame the terrified was a lick or two of molasses.
