Tiny Finch found out about his ability to fly when he was merely a baby. It was when he first saw his mother. The warmth from his chest grew as he looked at his dear mother's gentle eyes, it made him happy. As his happiness increased, his ability to fly also increased. It was a big problem since he wasn't able to control it and as he grew older, the ability got stronger and more harder to handle. If he felt neutral, he can float a few inches above the ground; happy or excited, he can fly really high up but it was still controllable; the more unbearable emotions such as anger and sadness makes it uncontrollable and difficult. With time and understanding he'll be able to handle such unique and strong ability in the near future.

indent➸ what was it like to be free?

indentwhat was it like to feel?

indentwhat was it like to fly?

indentin truth, thinking made mayumi's head hurt a lot. they had never been the type to analyze a given situation or to think critically of their next steps should they ever find themself in a particularly sticky situation. such was the fate of a young girl - did they even deserve to be called a girl? a child? - whose only purpose in this sinful world was to obey.

indentthough they have an insignia of a wing burned into their back, it served as a reminder of the fact that they were a mere war machine, rather than the supposed freedom that wings typically represented. in any case, it suited mayumi just fine. their lack of freedom was just them having had their wings metaphorically clipped, right? they were still alive, and that was what counted.

indentbesides, the rush of battle was exhilarating. it was about as exciting as they imagined flying to be, although considerably more dangerous, depending on the type of foe they faced. mayumi was fine with this life. their hands had been long stained with blood since she entered the world, so what was a few more bloody fingerprints to them?

indentlives were frail, fragile, delicate. all it took was a simple slice to a vital vein or tainting someone’s blood with poison to snuff it out. mayumi didn’t understand much, but they knew this: they didn’t value life, as they were practically a puppet to the higher powers.

indentthis was what being a war machine was all about. this was what screaming for hours and hours on end in a secluded laboratory was for. in essence, mayumi wasn’t even supposed to exist. brought into being through the sheer power of science and will, they were dubbed “subject xxv” and kept in a cell to maintain their state.

      indenthad it worked?

      indentthey didn’t know.

indentsure, they were physically gifted - what a joke, their dna has been altered and tweaked until all the imperfections had been removed and replaced with predatory senses - but mentally and emotionally? mayumi wasn’t sure where they were in that department.

indentthey looked human enough, but considering all the genes that had been forcibly spliced into their tiny and unwilling body, mayumi wasn’t sure if they could even be called a human. were they a hybrid? a freak? a monster?

indentthe scientists and doctors were very insistent on mayumi using the term “special war machine”. that further proved that the others didn’t even see them as someone complete. sure, they were special and one of a kind, but at what cost?

indentit was at times like this that mayumi longed for the freedom of flight, and the insignia burned into her back started to ache more than usual.

indentthey wanted to be human. they wanted to feel human emotions.

indentbut that’d never happen, so long they were kept as a war machine intended to wreck havoc on their enemies.

indentthus, mayumi continued to take lives without abandon. however, if you squinted, you might’ve been able to notice their lessened vigour.

SUBJECT XXV is shown to be more more temperamental than ever. SHE has been refusing shots and vaccines, and would argue back with the doctors. STABILITY is wavering. BLOOD PRESSURE levels are higher, cortisol levels see an unnatural rise. WARY. AGGRESSIVE. QUESTIONING AUTHORITY and is REFUSING TO TRAIN. PERFORMED excellently for several years, but if this continues, SHE may need to be terminated.

WILL initiate a three-week treatment of morphine to make HER calm down. WILL change HER diet, and move HER cell into a more secluded area while SHE recovers. SUBJECT XXV is a project that must absolutely not fail. SHE is vital to our plan, and cultivating another war machine like HER will only take more years. IF the morphine doesn't work, we will have to take more drastic options. I hope that it won't have to come to this.

indent➸ training was exhausting. once, mayumi might have enjoyed the burning sensation they felt in their muscles, but now, the only thing they felt was sheer agony.

indentwhy were they training again? why did they have to train every day even if there weren't any imminent threats? the higher powers were always talking about how they should be prepared at any given moment, but mayumi didn't see the reason why that was the case.

indentif they were already so powerful, then what was the point?

indentthey began to fight back. they started to resist orders, even though the insignia on their back practically screamed at them to obey. they started to think a little more, even though mayumi could never fully escape the organization.

indentthe decaying angels were terrifying. mayumi, who knew little of emotions, could say this with certainty.

indenteven when the morphine drug started to pull them under, mayumi tried their best to maintain a clear head for as long as possible. in this dog-eat-dog world, doing anything you could do to survive was the top priority. although they were aware that they were still important to the decaying angels' cause, they had little doubt that the moment they lost their use, they would be terminated.

indentthat was how the world worked and treated to those who weren't quite human.

indentyour existence will be tolerated so long you serve a higher power. acting alone on your own? dream on! everyone would do anything it takes to bring you back down to the ground and trap you in a cage too small for your wings.

indentno one would listen to your voice, dismissing your screams for beautiful, tragic melodies of a tamed songbird.

indentmayumi was tired of living like this.

indentbut still they kill, because they don't know what else they could possibly do in this broken, disgusting world.

SUBJECT XXV has showed no signs of improvement. IF anything, HER condition has become worse. I do not wish to have to terminate HER so soon. INSTEAD of administering more drugs, perhaps giving HER a companion will yield more results. SHE had showed all the telltale signs of loneliness. SUBJECT XXVIII has been in the works for some time. I'M certain that SUBJECT XXV will take a liking to these new arrangements. HAVING a companion will be an attempt to foster feelings and improve brain chemical reactions.

EVEN if it doesn't work, it's not the end of the world. THE important thing is for SUBJECT XXV to rise above all the other experiments as the optimal war machine. SUBJECT XXVIII will help SUBJECT XXV heal. IF HE doesn't, then HE will be terminated like the rest. HE is expendable. SUBJECT XXV is not.

indent➸ someone new was moved into mayumi's cell.

indenthe seemed skittish, uneasy, and when he noticed mayumi's small form against the bed's backboard, his eyes widened slightly.

indent"a-ah... you must be subject xxv?"

indent"yes," they answered simply. mayumi didn't have a single clue who the other person in the cell was. judging by his appearance, he was most likely another war machine who had failed the tests. the higher powers had never allowed them to interact with those who were lower than they were. this was a surprise. they cleared their throat slightly, and upon seeing the other person glance up, they continued on with their question. "who are you? why wasn't i made aware of these arrangements until now?"

indentthe boy averted his eyes and fiddled slightly with his fingers, as though he was trying to piece together the words he wanted to say. when mayumi's patience finally ran thin and was about to repeat their question, he spoke up, although much quieter than before. "i'm subject xxviii, and i'm supposed to keep you company as ordered by the higher powers."

indentsomewhere, in a small part of mayumi's brain, it exploded in a loud boom.

      indentwhat the hell?

indentthe boy simply prattled on, almost as though he was unaware of the effect his words had on mayumi. "oh, but i don't like being called subject xxviii. you can call me ryuu if you want. i heard it means 'dragon'! i'd like to be as strong and powerful as a dragon one day."

indent"that's... that's nice, i suppose? in that case, you're welcome to call me mayumi."

indent"mayumi it is, then! that's a pretty name. say, what's it like being a favoured war machine? i've heard that all the higher powers love you and that you're possibly the strongest out of all of us. i really envy you sometimes, but i'll do my best to become strong like you, too!"

indentwhat a chatterbox. ryuu talked quickly and without abandon, only pausing every now and then to heave in a deep breath before continuing on. it was unlike anything mayumi had ever experienced before. it was odd. it was almost uncomfortable.

indentbut to their surprise, they didn't exactly hate it.

indentthey didn't feel the urge to strike down ryuu and quiet him forever. that'd almost be a shame, seeing how ryuu was probably the only person in the entire facility who would talk to them like this.

indentit was just a shame that ryuu didn't seem to know the reason behind their apparent success. he seemed so eager, so bright, so desperate to succeed ... except without the backing of the higher powers, he'd never get there. he'd never receive the select traits that made mayumi stand out from everyone else.

indentmaybe it was better that way, though. not everyone in the world could be a prodigy, a gifted.

      indentright?

indentsome birds learned to fly, and some couldn't, no matter how hard they flapped their wings.

indentexcept, in this tiny cage, no one was even able to stretch their wings.

THERE appears to be little change in SUBJECT XXV, but although it’s subtle, it appears to be a turn for the better. SHE is calming down as expected, and there had been some further improvements since the last testing. SUBJECT XXVIII, too, has seen improvement. THERE is little doubt that this companionship will be beneficial to both parties.

THE only concern is how SUBJECT XXV is starting to ask more questions. CONSIDERATION for adding numbing or sleeping agents will be discussed. I do not believe SHE will outright question our authority, but in the end, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. THIS change is worrying. ALTHOUGH SUBJECT XXVIII has been shown to yield excellent results, it might be better for someone different to accompany SUBJECT XXV.

HE has potential to be dangerous. ALTHOUGH HE has repeatedly failed the tests, HE was still originally designed to be a war machine. HE has the potential to snap, and the one closest to HIM would be SUBJECT XXV.

WE absolutely cannot allow this to happen. IF HE needs to be terminated, then so be it. WE can deal with SUBJECT XXV in other ways.

      SIGNED, DOCTOR [redacted]

indent➸ living with ryuu was more eventful and exciting than mayumi had originally expected.

indentsure, it wasn’t the taste of freedom that they had always craved, but ryuu had his own certain charm. he spoke his mind, and he was always smiling. nothing seemed to ever bring him down, and he was an interesting conversation partner. his words provoked thought, and although mayumi was often times hard pressed to ignore him because they couldn’t understand, ryuu helped explain everything in a way that was neat and concise.

indentlike that, it was all too easy for mayumi to develop their own ideas and questions. however, because the higher powers would be able to tell if they were being too obvious, they did their best to be low key.

indent( “if you could have something, anything you ever wished for, what would it be?”

indent“flight. the ability to fly. the power to break free from these shackles and escape to the world beyond this facility.”

indent“why do you assume that you’re trapped here? you’re more powerful than any of them; it’d take little to now effort for you to break out, you know.”

indent“yes, but ... this place is all that i’ve ever known. am i bad for not wanting to leave sometimes? am i inhumane for wanting to believe that this is truly alright for me?”

indent“yes, because it’s clear that this is no place for someone like you. you long to be freed, to roam around, unrestrained. mayumi, this isn’t your path. you’re strong enough to fight back.”

indent“what if i’m not? i’m just a girl. i’m a war machine. i’m not even seen as human to those scientists and doctors. the decaying angels would never let me out of their sight.”

indent“who cares what they think! i’m here for you. although i might end up dragging you down, i think that you should look forward, beyond these walls, beyond the rails that trap you in this place.

indent“besides, i reckon that wings would look very pretty on you.”
      )

indenthaving someone that believed in them was a different feeling altogether. for the first time in their life, mayumi felt their heart thump once, twice, thrice at ryuu’s words. how did the facility ever raise someone as opinionated as he? ryuu was interesting, but at the same time, mayumi couldn’t help but fear that his lack of filter in his mouth would eventually lead him down the path of no return.

indentfor now, it was all okay. they would just speculate together and make plans that could never bear fruit, and everyone would be none the wiser. it was an excellent arrangement, and if mayumi had ever thought their life to be colourless and dull, it was nothing like that now.

indentthis wasn’t freedom nor flight, but it was as euphoric as mayumi had ever imagined the two to be.

indentthey were happy and content. one day turned to a week, a week turned to a month, a month to two months, two months to four months.

indentwith ryuu, maybe, just maybe ... they'll be able to experience the joys of flying.

indent( “i promise i'll be with you forever!” )

indent➸ ryuu loved telling stories. he had a penchant for thinking on the spot and weaving his words in a way that was mesmerizing to mayumi. it was a talent that wasn't looked favourably on by the higher powers, but was a skill nonetheless.

indentbelatedly, mayumi realized that ryuu's areas of specialty lay not with his physical strength, but with his charisma and his eloquence. he was like a bird who learned to chase sticks like a dog. he was a bird that would've never fit in this sort of society.

indentwas it a kindness that they had terminated ryuu? he would've never been able to survive in an environment such as that of the decaying angels. even when he had first been introduced to mayumi, he appeared to be on his wit's end.

indenthe was smart. he thought a lot.

indentand it was that same train of thought that led him to his eventual demise, mayumi surmised.

indentthe past few days had passed like a daze for them. they were barely aware of the doctors flitting in and out of their cell, the flashing lights of the facility, the sudden emptiness of her cell, the sudden silence that threatened to drown her --

indentwas this what grief felt like? it was a terrible emotion. mayumi couldn't understand why they had ever wanted to have human emotions in the first place. feeling so much hurt. their brain felt like it was going to split, and the sudden gap in her heart caused them to suddenly fall, gasping for breath as they reached for the back of a person that would never see them ever again.

indentthey had let go of too much, and as a result, they had become shackled to their own emotions. how stupid was that? if the higher powers could read their mind, they would scoff at mayumi. mayumi felt ridiculous, too. they wanted to blame ryuu, but wouldn't that make them an even bigger joke? what good could it do to blame a dead person? besides, it wasn't his fault that they had ever harboured feelings.

indentor maybe it was. mayumi had the walls to their heart built high and sturdy, but with ryuu, it started to crack. the walls were designed to keep everything out, but ryuu was like water, eroding away at the stone. he slipped in through the cracks, and once he got to the other side, he managed to bring mayumi out.

indentnow, he was gone, and mayumi felt vulnerable.

indentwhen was the last time they had felt like this?

indentsome war machine they were. it was laughable, honestly.

indentnowadays, mayumi's dreams have been plagued with visions of what could've been and images and memories they shared with ryuu. four months wasn't long; it was almost too short, but even in that amount of time, they had amassed a certain amount of memories. mayumi relives them all in their dreams, and it's relief and a knife to the gut at the same time.

indentthey get to see him once, twice, thrice, again and again after his death, but he never says anything. he just stands there and smiles, and before mayumi could even get close, he turns away and walks away. he always disappears after. he never stays.

indentand it hurts. it hurts that even though mayumi can see ryuu still, it doesn't mean a single thing.

indentthe light has been extinguished, and now the darkness is holding them hostage. even now, they don't fly. how can they? at one point, they were so close. they were so, so close ... and it all came crashing down.

SUBJECT XXV'S condition has not improved at all upon starting treatment. THIS is worrisome. VIDEO recordings show how SHE wakes up each night, screaming in HER cell and thrashing around like a wild animal. IF this is how SHE decides to act, then we may have no choice but to treat HER like an animal. IT'S rather unfortunate, but for now, we will spend our resources on HER. I do hope that SUBJECT XXV will prove to not be a waste of our time.

WE will have HER do more exercises and training. IT will be an effective way to sap HER strength and tire HER out. IT seems like drugs have almost all but lost their effectiveness on SUBJECT XXV. I will discuss with the scientists to see if there's anything we can do to procure a more potent drug just for HER.

      SIGNED, DOCTOR [redacted]

indent➸ mayumi found a letter addressed to them hidden within their pillow.

indentor, more accurately, they found a letter addressed to them, pressed between the pages of a notebook ryuu had been filling up, which they then found in their pillow.

indentit was an inconspicuous thing, which was probably why mayumi had never noticed the letter's existence until now. their name, written in loopy cursive, detailed the envelope that protected the letter. they traced a finger reverently over ryuu's handwriting, and they could almost imagine ryuu sitting on his bed, taking his time to create art out of paper and ink.

indentthe letter was a few pages long. mayumi had expected no less, as ryuu had always been the long-winded type of person. he had also left so abruptly, and it must've taken him a while to put together the letter without them noticing.

indentryuu had done all this without mayumi noticing, and done it all the while pretending that nothing was wrong. how had mayumi been so blind? had they really taken everything for granted back then?

indentregardless of whatever had happened in the past, mayumi decided to focus on the letter now. it was a warning for them. it was a plea fallen on deaf ears. it was a song that no one but mayumi would ever get to hear. it was a sacrifice because ryuu talked about everything, everything that wasn't allowed within the facility.

indent( it really was no wonder that he was terminated. it was still upsetting, though. )

indentreading through the letter felt like a slap to the face, a bucket of ice-cold water being poured over their head, their eyes being gouged out from their eye sockets. first came the imminent shock, then the numbness, and finally, the dull, growing rage.

indentwhy had ryuu left so much responsibility to mayumi even though they wouldn't be there to support them?

indentthey were a girl! a war machine with no power compared to the decaying angels! how could they ever hope to truly reach out to the skies and fly like ryuu had told them to? it was all a mindless dream, and mayumi cursed ryuu for being so carefree in his decisions.

indentonce upon a time, ryuu had told mayumi the story of daedalus and his son, icarus. they had constructed wings of wire, wax and feathers. they had successfully taken to the skies and escaped... which was good, except icarus had still fallen. ryuu referenced that story in his letter; he told mayumi to build a set of wings for herself to use and reminded her to stay away from the sun and the spray of water.

indent"look around your room and scavenge for items," ryuu had said in the letter. it was almost as if he knew exactly what should be done. in any case, mayumi wouldn't put it behind him for being this prepared.

indentvery well. they would attempt to do what ryuu had asked of them. even if mayumi didn't think that his plan would work, it was at least worth a shot. he walked so they could run. he glided so they could soar. he died so they could live.

indentsearching for freedom and flying had always been mayumi's own goals, but when ryuu reminded them of their desires, the need to be unrestrained was only bolstered.

indentthey'd do their best for ryuu, and for themself.

indentbuilding a set of wings, especially when they didn't have the greatest materials, was more than just difficult. mayumi wracked their brains for days on the end, fervently wishing that everything would go as ryuu had said it would and trying to build the wings as perfectly as they could. they cried and their fingers bled as they slaved over their work, adjusting it any time mayumi had a moment to themself, not allowing anyone else to take a single peep.

indentafter all, if anyone found out, it would truly be game over.

indentmayumi absolutely couldn't let that happen. they had yearned too much, suffered too much, sacrificed too much to simply allow their plans to fall flat.

indentconstructing the wings took a long time, but when they finally finished, it was a moment of peace and relief for mayumi.

indentthey had dreamed so long for this moment.

      indentthe pain would end soon.

indentthey wouldn't have to kill anymore.

      indentthey'd be free soon.

indentwhen the clock struck midnight, mayumi finally began to act. breaking out of their cell was easy, and subduing the guards around them was even easier. who would've known that the decaying angels had finally become complacent with just knowing that mayumi seemed calmer than they ever had before?

indentthey were fools, and they all deserved to burn. however, there was not enough time for that. casting a final, contempt-filled glare towards the bodies on the ground, mayumi began to run.

indentright now, their goal was to get to the very top of the facility. if mayumi was to fly, they needed to start from a high place. with their physical prowess, running from one floor to the next wasn't much of an issue. they didn't care to be quiet; the alarm had been sounded the moment they broke out of their cell, and although mayumi was focused on getting to her destination, they still had to keep an eye out for any tranquilizers that flew their way.

indentit was almost laughably easy. why hadn't they tried to escape before? why did they have to wait for ryuu to open their eyes?

indenttears pricked at the corners of mayumi's eye at the memory of their friend, but they quickly wiped the tears away upon reaching the very top of the facility. the wind tousled their hair, and the colourful lights from a nearby city shone brightly. for a moment, mayumi found themself enraptured, but quickly came to their senses once more when they heard the pounding of feet against the stairs leading up to the rooftop.

indentwith the makeshift wings strapped to their arms, mayumi took a deep breath. then, they ran across the roof, launching their small body into the night skies just as the guards reached the roof.

indentit was a joyous good bye. it was pure euphoria.

indentwith the cold air running through their hair and raising bumps along their skin, mayumi cried once more. her wings were functional, and weren't anything like the insignia that had been burned into her back. it was a beautiful sight to behold.

      indentshe was finally free.

SUBJECT XXV has escaped. WE will do anything in our power to either bring HER back or terminate HER. WE must find HER.

indent➸ what was it like to be free?

indentwhat was it like to feel?

indentwhat was it like to fly?

indentin truth, thinking made mayumi's head hurt a lot. ever since they took to the skies and left the facility far, far behind, they hadn't thought much of their past. although they lived in constant fear of the decaying angels and what they would possibly do to them if they found them, they tried to put it behind them.

indentbut flying was beautiful. it was so much fun, and it was a shame that ryuu wasn't there to enjoy the moment with them.

indentdid he know that mayumi would succeed? had he predicted this outcome?

indentryuu had written about it, so he must have.

indent( once upon a time, a small village near the foot of a mountain received a visitor. the visitor was a girl with wings strapped to her arms, and a thin, white, hospital gown. the girl had fallen out of the skies, and although they were in pain, they couldn't help but laugh with each movement they took. the stars shone in her eyes, the wind made her dress billow out, and the girl seemed so ethereal, so otherworldly. a bulging notebook was tucked into a bag slung over her shoulders, and the corner of a letter peeked out of it.

indentthe villagers couldn't help but ask: “young miss, are you an angel?”

indentthe girl, gasping for breath and holding her winged arms to her chest, replied simply: “i'm not.

indent“but i escaped from a very bad place. i flew for a long time before i crashed here. would it be amenable for me to stay for a bit, just so i can recover?”

indentthe villagers, upon hearing that the girl was human like them, calmed down. however, one small boy pushed his way to the front of the crowd, and stood in front of the girl. he puffed out his chest, and opened his mouth to speak. “then, big sister, what did it feel like to fly?”

indentthe girl froze, almost as though she was at a loss for words. her mouth opened and closed repeatedly, before finally, she smiled slightly and removed the wings attached to her arms. “it was the most beautiful experience ever. i loved it... but i wouldn't do it ever again.”

indent“why not?” the villagers questioned, echoing one another with their query.

indentthe girl smiled sadly, and raised her eyes to the sky. it was starting to lighten, with night giving way to dawn as the sign of a new day. “the stakes were simply too high. for the sake of me achieving my dream, i lost a friend. although he's still here in my head and in my heart, it's pointless if i can't see him again in the waking world and laugh with him and fly with him.

indent“i miss him so much, but in his memory, i need to live. i escaped from a bad place, and now i'll do anything it takes to live on for the both of us. i'll ask again, would it be amenable for me to stay here for some time as i recover?”

indentthe villagers nodded in unison, and the girl let out a sigh of relief. she swayed on her legs, before collapsing, exhausted, onto the ground below.
      )

indentmayumi had escaped. they were free now. they were no longer subject xxv, and they were no longer tied down to the decaying angels.

indentthey were a girl. they're no longer a war machine, because they're no longer going to kill and cause mass destruction.

indentthey're just mayumi, now, and that suited them just fine.

indentwhen they see ryuu again in their dreams, they whisper a small "thank you".

indentryuu never says anything anymore, but for once, he looked at mayumi in the eyes and smiled. then, he disappeared.

indenthe doesn't continue to visit mayumi's dreams afterwards.

indentthis was freedom, and mayumi loved every second of it.

Owlix's original name was Alix but he hated other people and had and odd obsession with birds. He wanted to change his name to a bird but wanted to keep his name. So he changed to Owlix and ''flew'' far away from his tree. His desired home was a large redwood in a forest. A long time of flying and walking he found the forest and climbed up the biggest tree, making a hole and finally resting. This was his home now.

I stared at the stars. I couldn't see them in person, my immunodeficiency I got from aplastic anemia preventing me from leaving the contained room i've been living in for years. I'd gotten my friends to help me set up a camera to film the stars at night, which would project onto the ceiling from the projector set up within my bubble. I hated being trapped in here. I always watched for planes among the stars, wondering if I might someday be able to fly too.

Flying was always one of my dreams. Being trapped in this bubble makes it hard to think what the outside world is really like. The stars mapped on my ceiling, it's not the same. I've got the bigger ones filled with fairy lights, but They don't shine like real stars do. I long to fly, often wishing the wings upon my fur were real. I suffer sometimes, feeling trapped and useless here. But I've built things, had to in order to keep them in my bubble.

In order for anything to enter my space, it must be fully decontaminated. I must learn the inner-workings of... well, everything in order to have things like a printer with me. I've built my own computer and have so many model planes... Oh how I wish I could fly.

Flying offers freedom; freedom that I don't have. But someday, I'll be up in the sky, flying, because I can.
