Kalon Name: Voltaire
Gender: Male
Prompt Response: The sky is inky black, clouds rolling through the suffocating darkness. The moon is full and bright. The night is silent, as usual since all the creatures left their homes. The air is eerily still and the bare trees droop their sad, listless branches. Out of the silence emerges a rusty creak, the sound of the Gatekeeper, Voltaire, leaning back against the heavy locked gate.
Staff in one paw, he sits motionlessly in the center of the large doors, staring straight ahead. Far down the path ahead of him, a faint glowing light comes into view. He doesn't even blink, if you didn't know him you'd assume he hadn't even seen it... But the Gatekeeper sees all. The glow grows brighter and still the Gatekeeper doesn’t move. Even a blink could be long enough for something or someone to slip through to the other side, a mistake he can’t afford.
The light grows closer yet and a figure begins to emerge from the shadows, illuminated only by the lantern in their paw. Voltaire’s attention slowly turns to the figure, and as his head turns, a strong gust of wind rattles the gates and blows out the flame inside the old lantern. The shadows engulf the figure once more, and Voltaire looks around nervously, but doesn’t show it.
Suddenly a loud crash is heard as the lantern falls to the ground, and the fur on the back of Voltaire’s neck stands on edge. The figure appears to be gone, but he can’t be sure. Against his better judgment, he stands up and makes his way towards the old lantern shards, the end of his staff glowing to light the way. There are pawprints that stop where the lantern lies. He turns slowly around him, but sees nothing. How odd.
“Looking for someone?” A voice asks from right beside the gates, the figure grinning evilly.
Time stands still. Everything is in slow motion. Voltaire lunges for the gate but it’s too late. The figure snaps the chains and pulls the gate open, cackling to themself. Voltaire yells for them to stop but it cannot be undone. Wailing comes from the other side of the gate and wispy spirits come pouring out, spiraling out into the darkness, an endless stream lead by the initial figure.
Voltaire yells even louder, the angry wind from within the gates pushing against him, shoving him towards the trees and away from his entire life's purpose.
Suddenly the world starts to spin, and the undefeated Gatekeeper falls to his knees beside the lantern shards, tears streaming down his face.
Without a moment to process it, his entire world falls.
