aquila was rather flattered by timothy wanting help, though he couldn't say he was surprised. he thought for a bit on how to help the kit, and finally settled on perhaps the most useful, important lesson he'd ever learned. "alright, kid, the lesson today is all about confidence! to be able to succeed, you're gonna need lots of it. wanna know how i got mine?" this earned a quick, eager nod from timothy. aquila laughed in response, picking him up underneath his shoulders and spinning. "by singing!" he sang flawlessly before putting him down. "i just sang, loud and clear as possible, so that all i could focus on was the song. i can't say it'll work for everyone, but i can see that you've got soul, kid! so let's try it, then?"
he layed on his belly in the sand, gesturing for timothy to stand on his back. "to sing with that beautiful voice of yours, you'll need to balance yourself. both body and voice. that way, you'll be able to carry out whatever choreography you want. got it?" the child nodded once more, belting out a tune with his arms flat at his sides before losing his balance and toppling off of the larger kalon. "no, no. you'll need a proper foot stance, too. like this." aquila got up to his knees, and grabbed timothy's ankles to adjust his feet in a proper stanc; far enough apart and steady. "now, just like that; sing again. but this time, focus on what's ahead of you, arms up and out to keep yourself up, and chest strong. proud! assert your dominance, kid!" the child did as directed, again on aquila's back. he was able to now carry out a full song without falling into the sand.
"now you've got it! now quick, grab your board; i see some waves kicking up. time to take this show on the road... er, wave!"
the two surfed together, each on their own board side by side for a few song lengths. in perfect harmony not only did they complete the songs, they somehow managed to surf without a single wipeout. once they returned to the beach, aquila looked over timothy's shoulder and smiled. "looks like we had an audience, too." sure enough there was mako; clapping as he approached the pair.

Down near the tide pools, you find Timothy with a small surfboard.
He wants to impress Mako with his skills, but he can't get his trick right.
How does your kalon help him out?
As per Shark's request to stop 'bugging' him, she did as asked and wandered down to the beach to find something to do. Each time she came down, she still marvelled at the pristine water and the golden, powdery sand beneath her feet. She was enjoying the feeling again, when she noticed Timothy down near the waters edge. It wasn't unusual to see the young Kalon down by the rock pools, but this time he had a surfboard tucked under his arm. Curious, she went to investigate.
"Hey, Timothy!" She called as she approached. "Whatcha got there?"
He turned when he heard his name, and his frowning face broke into a smile. "Hiya, Annie! Good to see you." At her question his expression returned to a frown, and he scuffed his feet in the sand. "It's a surfboard. I'm...trying to get some moves right, but...I'm not sure I'm any good." Then in a more embarrassed tone he added, "I was…kinda hoping to impress Mako. But I don't think I'm doing it right."
Annie gave him a sympathetic smile. "I'm sure you just need a little more practice. It does make perfect, after all. Hey!" she suddenly exclaimed. "How about I grab a board and come and surf with you? Maybe I could help you out!"
He nodded enthusiastically, and waited while she dashed off to retrieve a board. As she was bringing it back she tried to ignore the thought that she didn't actually know how to surf. Timothy was such a sweet kid, and she wanted to help him; surely she could make it up as she went along. How hard could it be?
Quite hard, apparently.
They'd gone out into deeper water so that their feet weren't touching the sand, but they were still a safe distance away from the shore. Thank goodness for this calm ocean. But as Annie was understanding, that's where the easy part ended.
"So," she began, "the basics." She had no idea what they were, but hoped she sounded confident anyway. "The first thing we need to do, um, is get up on our boards. And start paddling. Yeah. Just gonna-" she tried to pull herself up -"get up on here-" her hands scrabbled on the flat surface. She grabbed the other edge; the board flipped upside down. She flipped it back, taking a deep breath, and using all her strength to force herself up. She made it onto the board - and immediately slipped off the other side into the water. Spluttering, she resurfaced to see Timothy sitting on his board, looking quite at ease and trying not to laugh.
"That's really good," she said, ignoring what had just happened. "Great, in fact. Now, um-"
"Annie?" He interrupted.
"Yes?"
"You don't know how to surf, do you?"
"Um-" she hesitated. "I…know of the general concept."
His mouth twitched up in a smile. "Would you like me to teach you?" She gave him a sheepish grin. "That'd be nice, yeah."
It took half an hour for her to finally clamber up on the board and start paddling around while Timothy called out directions. "You're doing really great!" He encouraged her.
"Hey, good job Timothy!"
Both him and Annie turned at Mako's voice. "Good to see you showing her the ropes! You're doing an awesome job!" He gave them a thumbs up from his board before paddling away. Timothy beamed at the praise. Annie smiled to herself; looks like this plan worked out after all.

fernmoon | sharkbait | team octopi | 340 words
sharkbait headed down towards the beach with her surfboard. near the tide pools, she saw timothy on his surfboard, obviously determined to get his tricks down. she stood there watching until timothy wiped out. it seemed painful by the way he fell, but it was quite humorous to her and her weird sense of humor. "what a wipe out," sharkbait said to herself while struggling to contain her laughter. it was cruel, but his shocked expression was unexpectedly funny.
when he got back to shore, it was obvious that he was going to be annoyed by what just happened to him. sharkbait went up to him then said, "before i forget, i heard that you are wanting to impress mako but just can't get it down right. maybe, i can help you out with that as i passed at least one of mako's classes, so i do know a few things. so, what do you say? how about i help you out?"
timothy thought for a moment before a replying. "passing one class isn't that much of an achievement, you know?"
sharkbait looked nervously around as what he said was pretty true. " yeah, but do you still want help?"
"you bet it!" timothy exclaimed with a determined smile. " as soon as mako sees me, mako will be so impressed!"
"then, show me what you are trying to do i will see where you fall off, then we'll go from there," sharkbait explained as timothy nodded. she stood on the shore watching him until he came back to hear what she had to say. after that, the process repeated until timothy for each move down perfectly. "excellent job, timothy! mako would definitely be impressed by those tricks. go show mako them as soon as you can!"
timothy nodded then said farewell to sharkbait. the sun was setting over the horizon as she picked up her surfboard. she knew that there would be no way for timothy not impress mako. all she hoped was that timothy does better than excellent door mako.

How do they find it, and what's the experience like?
Of COURSE he would drop it off of the boat. Not in the sand, or left on a countertop in one of the nice, air-conditioned buildings... of course Shark would plop an important tool right into the depths of the ocean. Once again, she'd been roped into helping find it, too. It felt like the last shreds of her dignity were slipping away, and she wasn't sure that they'd ever get off this island. Images of her plants - wilted and dying from lack of proper care - haunted her dreams, taunting her worse than any monster ever could. Just the thought of it made a shudder run down her spine as she made her way to the beach. They'd left gear there so she could go diving for this forsaken tool.
With a grumble and a groan, she slipped into the wetsuit first. It took a lot of wiggling and frankly was one of the most uncomfortable things she'd ever worn. The goggles were too tight on her head and she couldn't figure out how to adjust them. Sycamore sighed as she settled the air tanks onto her back. They were heavy and unwieldy and she wondered how she would manage to swim with them on.
All of her gear was properly in place, and she was ready to go - even though her grimace made it clear she didn't want to.
Slowly, Sycamore stepped into the lukewarm water. It covered her paws, then her legs, her tail.... until finally everything was underwater but her head. She shivered as she silently prayed that her tanks were working properly and ducked under with a gasp.
Well, she could still breath, so there was that. The tanks must have been working. And... everything was actually pretty nice under here. Pretty coral plants she'd have to consider cultivating in some aquariums when she got back home, lots of colorful little fish darting around in big clusters. This should be easy, right? A dirty tool should stick out like a sore thumb down here among all the colorful, pretty things. "Come on, Shark, let's find your stupid tool." She muttered to herself.
She made her way along, unwilling to admit she was a little afraid of what she might step on. Probably a crab that would pinch her, or a jellyfish to sting her with her luck. "Come on, come on." Her eyes scanned quickly and efficiently for her goal.
Within about twenty minutes, Sycamore had made it to where Shark had so helpfully approximated the boat would have been the day that he lost it. She searched a little frantically, hoping to get this over with as quickly as possible. The tanks were really starting to make her back hurt, and the goggles weren't getting any looser.
Having no luck, she pulled out her secret tool - a waterproof flashlight.
Moving it around a bit, she saw a faint sparkle in the distance. She made her way over and dug into the soft sand, and with a smirk of absolute victory, found the tool and held it aloft. "Mission success," She mumbled, grasping it like she was afraid it would slip away. With the tool safely in her paws, she immediately made her way back to the coastline and stripped herself of the diving gear like it burned her skin.
Still sulking from having to do it at all, she strolled up to Shark and dropped the wet tool on the sand in front of him. Then she turned and stalked away without a word.
