Prompt 5: How does your kalon help him out?

“Er, kid- I don’t know how to tell you this, but uh, I can’t surf either. I can uh try and help you I guess..” Aderyn said nervously. There was no doubt in her mind that this wouldn’t end well. “So uh, what tricks are you trying to learn then?” She asked, gesturing with her paws for him to show her.
Timothy smiled sheepishly, as he attempted to explain the trick, “Er- it’s like you maneuver on the wave so you like move from side to side.. it’s basic I know, but, well I just can’t get it down.” Aderyn nodded silently, getting rather anxious. She was likely a worse surfer than Timothy, and going out into those waves- yikes! Her kindness had backfired, it seemed. “Well.. I guess we can.. uh, go out there,” she said with a gulp.
Timothy smiled gleefully, practically flying to the frothy edge of the waves, Aderyn trudging behind.
After getting a ways out, Aderyn attempted to stand on wobbly legs, flapping her large wings nervously, and to help her balance. She stood there, barely able to stand for a moment. Well that wasn’t so hard, she thought, instants before flipping backwards off of her board into the water.
She was drenched! Her wings were insanely heavy, and her thick hair was weighing down her head. She groaned softly, pushing herself onto the board as Timothy cackled. “I told you I can’t surf,” she groaned, letting the board slowly float back to shore.

Prompt Five -Timothy wants to impress Mako with his skills, but he can't get his trick right.

Rather aggressive - and therefore potentially annoyed - splashing caused Oxford to stir and wake from his gentle doze by the tide pools. He had tired himself out by socialising and getting to know new people, including Yaakova whom he'd got along with pretty well, but had chosen to retire for a short while once it got too much. Personal questions had begun to be thrown around and Oxford found it made him feel slightly uncomfortable. Small talk he was fine with but more personal conversation in a group setting had always been a sore spot with Oxford. To avoid them, he frequently deflected with a self-depricating joke to change the conversation or simply went quiet, his extroverted persona fading a little as soon as it turned towards him and he would try his best to avoid or divert from those feelings of discomfort. Despite this, he knew that he was pretty good at hiding that he was actually a pretty shy person once it turned more personal because of how much he loved joking around and poking fun at himself. It distracted from the fact that he could chat away with a group of people he'd just met for hours without them actually finding out much about him - a technique he employed when he was at work in Sun&Moon Records.

Further frustrated splashes accompanied by shouting distracted him from his thoughts and brought him back to the beach. Oxford realised he'd been absent-mindedly watching a young boy attempt the same trick over and over again with very little luck each time. After another failed endeavour, Oxford made up his mind that he would make every effort to help the poor kit and see if there was some way he could help him nail the trick. Oxford brushed off his dark shorts, straightened his colourful hawaiian shirt and readorned himself with his shades. Only then was he ready to try and aid the kit as he approached with a wide smile on his fine.

"Hi! My name's Oxford - what's yours?" he asked.

"Timothy.." the boy responded, obviously feeling very down about it all as he dropped his surfboard onto the ground and sat on the warm sand next to it. Oxford took a seat beside him and sat in silence for a while as he debated how to approach this task.

"What trick were you trying to do?"

"A tail slide, I've been at it for a few days now but I just can't seem to get it right!" Timothy huffed as he drew patterns into the sand, somewhat reminding Oxford of a sulking toddler.

"Well we can't have that can we!" Oxford began in preparation of his attempt at a motivational speech, "You must be so close to getting it, especially if you've been trying to crack it for a few days! How about I watch you do it a few times and see if I can spot anything that might help you land it? I'm no pro-surfer myself, I don't think I could even stand upright on one of those surfboards, but I was pretty good at physics when I was at school if I do say so myself so I might be able to help at least a little bit?"

While he spoke, Oxford observed a small smile spread across young Timothy's face as he began to cheer up. It was very gratifying to see his little speech have the desired effect, especially given Oxford's minimal experience with children. It's not that he didn't like them, because he did absolutely love them, but more that he hadn't really had much of an opportunity to spend time with any.

"Alright then!" Timothy chirped back, presumably back to his normal, cheerful self. He grabbed his board and ran back into the sea with a renewed energy to keep trying until he got it right. He didn't that day, because Oxford's advice was only helpful to an extent, but the pair had such a great time surfing until the sun set that it had Oxford grinning for the rest of the day.

[ ❧ ] admittedly, at first you arent really sure how to help. you're not much of a surfer, or good at any sports really. you're not much of a sporty type at all. but... you cant just tell timothy no and not help him, or at least try, just because you dont know how yet. besides, are you the type to give up on helping someone? absolutely not!

you roll up your sleeves (...that you dont have, you're wearing short sleeves) and take a deep breath before you head over to the shore. "alright, i think first we should try to assess what's going wrong, so that you can learn to do it right, y'know?" timothy pauses to consider this, then nods! he goes and grabs his surf board, and then gives you a smile before paddling out a little ways into the water, about where waves would start to form. he looks at you for a sign to continue, and you flash him a quick thumbs up, and then he nods again, and waits for a wave to approach. it takes a good minute or so, but one starts rolling in eventually, and timothy braces himself and gets ready to stand. just as the wave gets close enough, he gets up onto his feet impressively fast, and he looks like he's a pro at this, you don't understand what he's having trouble with, and then... he seems to freeze up, and his balance falters, and he slips right off the board as the wave crashes over him. he comes back to shore sputtering and upset, as expected... you grab a towel nearby, and offers it to him, to which he takes and wraps around his shoulders with a clear pout.

"just dont understand what im doing wrong..." he grumbles, and stares very pointedly at the beach. you're quiet for a moment, lost in thought, trying to figure out why he might be having trouble, and it's not long before you realize the problem.

you get to your feet, and offer him your hand. he takes it, cautiously, and glances up at you curiously. "i think you have an issue with your confidence... you were doing amazing up until you saw the wave and must've realized how big and scary it really is up close... what do you say we stop by carter's and invite him to join us for some ice cream, and maybe we can help you work on that confidence! he's a skilled crafter of his trade, im sure he could have some pointers for boosting confidence and self esteem." timothy beams, and goes to grab his surf board. the two of you make your way to carter's, and in the mean time, you think of ways to boost timothy's esteem.

you think by the time timothy wants to show mako his trick, he'll be able to pull it off easily.
