Prompt # 5 Dᴏᴡɴ ɴᴇᴀʀ ᴛʜᴇ ᴛɪᴅᴇ ᴘᴏᴏʟs, ʏᴏᴜ ꜰɪɴᴅ Tɪᴍᴏᴛʜʏ ᴡɪᴛʜ ᴀ sᴍᴀʟʟ sᴜʀꜰʙᴏᴀʀᴅ.
He wants to impress Mako with his skills, but he can't get his trick right. How does your kalon help him out?
Radford rolled his eyes and walked away from the grumpy mechanic. "Have fun tinkering old man" he called dryly over his shoulder as he walked towards the beach. He walked along the shoreline lost in his thoughts until he came upon Timothy sitting on his surfboard drawing doodles in the sand.
"'Sup kiddo?" he asked the young kit.
Timothy wiped away a tear quickly as he jumped up off his board and looked up at Radford, smiling shakily.
"Hi!" he said. "I'm trying to learn a surfing trick but it's not going well".
"Sorry to hear that little dude," Radford said sincerely. He had a soft spot for the young kalon and it was ...distressing...to see him upset. An unfamiliar emotion to the normally unfazed individual.
"Hey! Maybe you can help me?" Timothy asked, hope appearing in his tone.
Radford flinched. "Not sure if you've seen me out on the waves, but let's just say I'm familiar with wipe-outs."
Timothy's face fell and his shoulders curved inward. Radford felt a sharp pang in his chest.
"You know what they say though, practice makes perfect."
"They do?"
"Yeah, buddy. I bet you could teach me a thing or two. Maybe if we work together, you can teach me to surf better and keep having a go at that trick you wanna learn."
"Yeah! Okay! Let's do it!" Timothy grabbed his board and started trotting into the water.
Radford laughed. "Hang tight! I need to get my own board from Mako first!"
"I'll wait," said Timothy happily.
Radford walked into the surf shack and headed to the board he had been using in lessons over the last few days.
"Hey man," Mako said, spotting him between the boards. "Going out on your own? Uh, because, I'd have to advise against that, safety first and all." He coughed awkwardly.
"Dude, I know I suck," Radford told him. "Don't worry, Tim's going to keep an eye on me."
Mako visibly relaxed. "Yew! Have fun then!" he called as Radford exited, board grasped tightly under his arm.
Timothy and Radford spent the next few hours in the surf, and every so often someone walking by would hear Timothy yelling helpful suggestions to the incompetent pierced kalon.
"No! That wave is too big, dive through it!"
"You're sitting too far back, scoot forward a little!"
"Try taking this one lying down, like it was a body board!"
"Keep paddling!"
"It needs to be seamless! You're trying to stand up too slowly!"
"Don't bend your back, bend your knees!"
In fact, Timothy was so busy helping Radford he had forgotten all about trying to impress Mako.
"Let's call it a day, kiddo! I'm beat!"
Timothy nodded tiredly and they paddled back to shore together, Radford visibly more comfortable on his board and in the water after his lesson with the young kit.
As they walked through the shallows together they saw Mako sitting on the beach. He waved them both over.
"Hey bro, hey grommie. Gimme ten!" Mako and Timothy smacked their palms together.
"You are so talented Tim! I couldn't even get this guy to stand up successfully."
"Hey!-" Radford started to say.
Mako ignored the interruption. "I need an assistant with all these extra souls on our island. You wanna help me out?"
Radford had never seen the young kit look so happy. He was practically bursting out of his skin.
"Yeah! That would be awesome Mako!" Timothy said enthusiastically.
Radford decided to leave them to talk over their new arrangement. He was surprised to find himself grinning as he took his board back to the surf shack.
