Eleanor strolled the beach casually. She honestly didn't know what she was supposed to be looking for. Scrap metal? Bolts? A spare engine? She doubted one of those would wash up, and even if it did, there'd be no way she could haul it all the way back to Shark's garage. But going back to the scrap metal thing, can he weld? Would scrap metal even be of use to him if he can't weld?

"What kind of mechanic can't weld? Of course he can, Eleanor."

Uh oh. Talking to herself was usually a final sign before she went off the deep end from boredom. She sighed and plonked down on a log on the beach, sand in her shorts be damned. She turned to look at how far she had walked and how far she had to go until the beach blended back into thick forest. She was fairly close to that end, actually, and she decided that even if she wasn't going to bring anything useful back, she was at least going to be able to say she walked the entire length of the beach.

Eleanor took a swig from her water bottle before she hoisted herself back to her feet and kept going. This far along the beach, the sand was grittier and more rocky than the fine white she had grown used to. Every now and then an odd object would catch her eye. Curious, she would turn them over, but they always ended up being bottle caps or broken parts of objects long forgotten. She mumbled to herself about the environment and stowed each find in her shorts pockets to throw away later.

As she came to the edge of the beach, Eleanor spotted a rather large glinting surface tangled in the roots of trees that stretched out into the seawater. The path to get to the thing was slimy and weedy, but Eleanor's interest was piqued. She picked her way through the muck and crouched to pull the object out of the water. It appeared to be a wine bottle. Its top had been re-corked and waxed over to seal it up, and as she carefully wiped off the surface, she realized something lay within the green glass. Heart racing, she peeled off the wax and worked away at the cork until it finally came free with a satisfying, 'Pop!'

Picking the contents out was a task and a half, but as she worked them free, Eleanor's eyes widened and her heart skipped a beat. Not only were they letters and postcards and notes, they were love letters etched in fine, curly handwriting. The messages were fond and sentimental, and at the ends of a few postcards, she recognized the remains of an address. Perhaps... perhaps she could find the writer and tell them, or the intended recipient and send them on!

Eleanor stood quickly, tucking the papers back into the bottle and scampering back up the beach. The bottle caps and sea glass in her pockets jangled the whole way, but she hardly heard them over the exciting thoughts of romance and reunion that raced through her head.

♒ Summer Event [Prompts] [OPEN]

Postby Gladis » Wed Jul 24, 2019 4:56 pm

Prompt 3: Your kalon goes beachcombing for spare parts, but they find something else in their search. What do they uncover?
Team Squid || Calluna || Ft. Tori, Anthony, Shark
"Jeez, this is no fun. I'm starting to get a sunburn," Calluna sighed as she kicked the sand beneath her feet. She hastily grazed the area like a lost sheep. She dug her toes deep into the wet sand below, watching the waves climb up to the edge of her legs & slink back down into the horizon. A cool breeze picked up the edges of Luna's pearl white dress & dragged it along the wind. What a view, she smiled to herself as she gazed at the baby blue sky, painted with just enough clouds to keep the heat down. Shark had already chided Luna for not doing her job, so she made sure to stray as far away as she could from the ship. Luna planned to go back with a few seashells, they were pretty useless, but maybe Shark would fancy a seashell necklace?

Voices slowly emerged from the distance & bubbled into sounds of joyful chatter. Luna looked to her left to see a crowd of people, also on the hunt for ship parts. She politely brushed aside the sparkling visitors who wanted to mingle with her. She was preparing to leave as a brown-haired girl caught her attention. She looked oddly familiar. The girl was wearing a simple sundress decorated with a large floppy sunhat, & she looked fairly lost. Luna stared at her for a minute before remembering the face of the girl that was on Anthony's phone background.

"Hey! Aren't you Tori?" Luna called out. The girl looked at her with confusion, so she skipped straight ahead to introduce herself. "I'm Luna, Anthony's friend."
"Oh hi! Um, I'm a little lost. Could you show me the way around?"
"Of course! But I thought Anthony said you weren't coming, why are you here?"
"Oh that! Uh... You see, my boyfriend told me about the crash, & I got worried so I uh," Tori let out a small embarrassed laugh, "I took a private jet & had the pilot drop me off here. There wasn't enough room to take us both back, so I wanted to come to make sure everything was okay & that he didn't set this whole island on fire." Man this girl is extra. Luna grabbed her hand & ran towards the direction of the ship. Anthony's probably somewhere there, she thought to herself. She saw his friend Musashi over there earlier.

"Over here Anthony! I found your girlfriend! This is for rescuing me earlier today!"
"Hey!" Shark barked from the distance, "I said find me parts, not find long lost lovers!"

What do they uncover?

Sand, huh? Sycamore gritted her teeth as she began to dig through the warm, golden particles, wondering how in the world she'd gotten to this point. She hated sand. Nothing grew in sand, very few things lived in sand, it was essentially useless aside from burning your paws and getting stuck in your fur for weeks and weeks no matter how many times you showered - as she was sure would happen now as she knelt on the beach searching for anything that would get her off of this island quicker. Even though it had been fun at first to see the plants and wildlife, her patience was growing thin as she thought of all the care her plants at home needed and how no one was there to give it to them.

While kalons around her found every sort of weird thing imaginable, Sycamore continued to dig and dig, finding absolutely nothing. Not a nut, not a bolt, no buried treasure, not even a weird crab or a seashell that would have been there long before the boat arrived.

"Seriously?" She huffed at her own bad luck, wondering what she had done to deserve something like this.

Her paws were growing tired and the sun was beating down harder than ever on her back. Even her legs were sore from kneeling for this long, her entire body screamed to stop. "Come on," She muttered under her breath, "Give me something." Scoop after scoop of sand joined the growing mountain beside her, looking like a smashed sand castle - but less fun of course.

After a few more moments, her paws felt something slick and smooth among the bits of sand. Something hard and square she could just about wrap her paw around. Her eyes lit up as she dug quicker to pull it out, watching the sand cascade away from it as she pulled it free of its hiding spot. However, her enthusiasm dampened a little bit as she realized what she was holding. It was an old-style cell phone, an absolute brick almost too big for her paw to hold. One of the ones you could throw against a brick wall and it wouldn't even be fazed. Who had left this here? Especially back when cell phones were new and so exciting?

Well... it probably wouldn't help get off the island, but Sycamore realized it would still turn on. At least she could keep herself busy seeing what secrets were hidden on a stranger's cell phone, right?

Prompt #4 I think?

Your kalon goes beachcombing for spare parts, but they find something else in their search.

What do they uncover?

Now that Maní had a key to the engine room, she thought her troubles would be over. But no, apparently not. Carcharodon had told her they still needed to find materials. That would be fine. Maní would assist in any way she could.

As much as she liked the peaceful, if slightly crab overrun, island, the thought of being stuck in one small geographic location for too long without any escape made her feel uncomfortable and slightly sick. This made Maní all the more eager to help fix the ship, but of course, she kept this to herself.

“I’ll try,” Maní told Shark, briefly making eye contact, “I’m sure I can find something.” She smiled. The older kalon still looked solemn, so she turned to leave him.

Maní made her way toward the beach, the sand sifting through her toes and getting stuck in the long fur on her forelegs as she approached the shore. She stopped to look at the beach. A thick belt of sand covered the area between where she stood and the water, scattered with rocks and some misshapen seashells. Gentle foamy waves lapped against the beach, leaving the sand darker when they retreated.

The sandy expanse stretched on around the whole island. Certainly a lot of things were washed ashore, but was any of it what she needed? Hopefully Captain and Egg would be able to help her. They were already on the beach. She hadn’t talked to them much yet, though she easily recognized them: a fuffy pale grey kalon with two eyes of different colors, pink and purple, and ears that did not end; and a much taller beautiful grey kalon with shorter fur and subtly shark like features.

Captain. The name had been a bit confusing at first as Captain was not even a captain, but Maní supposed it would be even stranger if a kalon named Captain was in fact an actual captain. And besides, Maní’s name meant “peanut”, which was even more odd.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

The first 10 or 20 minutes proved to be fruitless, even with Captain and Egg’s help. Maní only managed to find objects such as battered corals and seashells, and of course, trash. Maní felt something catch against her paw. It was one of those pieces of plastic packaging from a six-pack of drinks. She scowled slightly as she put it in the pocket of her shirt. Why did this have to happen?

Maní saw a few marine animals, which did raise her spirits, but would help them little. Starfish dotted the beach and she had to be careful not to step on them, and she saw the occasional crab or seagull as well. She crouched now to watch a small crab scuttle sideways over the sand, perhaps hunting for food, or trying to avoid becoming food itself.

“Please getting distracted, Maní,” one of them said.

“Sorry,” she muttered.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

Eventually, they did manage to find a few ship parts washed ashore. Many of them were around the same place on the beach but It was made trickier by the fact that most of them were covered in a layer of dirt, rendering them unable to glint in the sun. Maní offered to hold them, but was unable to carry them all. They had found a few parts, but this still wouldn’t be enough.

Maní suspected that a majority of the parts hadn’t made it to shore. She looked at the parts she had. She was pretty sure she dropped one at some point. When she up again, something else caught her eye. It seemed to be made of wood, but was too pale and neatly shaped to be driftwood.

Maní put her parts down in front of Egg for a moment and trotted up to the piece of wood. She ran her forepaw along its rim—it was smooth and rounded and had spokes leading to a center which she could not see. The object was mostly buried in sand, though the covering was not that deep. It seemed to be some kind of wheel. She pushed aside sand as quickly as she could and started to tug the object free from its prison.

“What are you even doing?” Egg asked, looking in Maní’s direction.

“I found something.” Maní freed the object and held it victoriously in her arms. It was a small ship’s wheel. Too small and too old to be from the cruise, it must have been from some smaller vessel, and besides, the cruise ship wheel was still intact as far as Maní knew. She stood the wheel upright on its rim and rolled it along the sand. Egg didn’t seem amused. Captain appeared to appreciate Maní’s find more, but she couldn’t be sure. She rolled the wheel all the way back to where Shark was waiting while trying to carry the few parts she had.

“Why did you bring that back?” Shark raised an eyebrow, “I can’t . . . fix the engine with a wheel.”

Shark wasn’t impressed with the wheel, but he did thank Maní for the parts. Maní held up the wheel trying to see if she could determine the date. She set it down. Maybe she should search for more parts?
