What a hectic beginning for everyone's first day on the island. It seemed most were strung high with tension and worry, while there were a few stragglers who seemed to be making the best of it -- Marcela deemed herself to be one of those few stragglers. That wasn't to say though, that she was completely stress-free, but she planned to take Carcharodon's advice and do a little self-exploration. Slowly but surely, everyone was given a small, worn-out map that ensured everyone would find at least something to do while they waited out the repairs of the ship.
Sure, the map she had been handed was a little worn down, but the engravings were still fairly visible. It seemed there were tons of places to explore, despite the island giving off a more remote vibe. What caught her eye first, mind you the colourful buildings, was a spot dedicated to watching the waves. Obviously, it was used for those who wanted to surf but seeing as that wasn't something she had ever taken up, sitting down and enjoy the waves seemed like the next best thing.
The area itself was gorgeous. The water was unbelievably blue, and even the sand had a certain softness to it that Marcela though only dreams could do justice. This was no dream, of course. It was very much her reality and the reality of many others. In all fairness, being able to sit near the shoreline and watch the waves crash into one another didn't seem like such a terrible fate.

Wynter looked at the old map, and wandered for a bit. She had nothing better to do, so she thought "why not?" and set out with some food and water. She saw what looked like a lagoon on the old map. It was a bit smudged, but decided to try and hike to it anyways. It didn't look too far away when she looked at the landmarks close to her and seeing where they were at on the map. When her bag was packed, and with the map in hand, she set off.
She kept to the trees where it was cooler, and the sun wasn't glaring directly on her. For safety, she stayed within easy view of the ocean. The bugs didn't really bother her, and she snapped pictures as she went. Wynter wasn't familiar with all of the flora, and she made sure not to touch anything she was unsure about. Some plants that looked harmless could leave you itching for days, and she didn't want to be miserable while on vacation. She came to a hill, and when she got to the top, she could see what looked like a stream.
She compared it to her map, and indeed, it looked like it led to the lagoon. Wynter adjusted her bag and picked her way down the cliff. The water lazily lapped against the shore as she walked further into the jungle. Then, seemingly all at once, it opened up into a gorgeous blue lagoon. There weren't any other footprints that she could see, and she cautiously inched further around the lagoon. It was really something. Some of the trees and palms hung over the water like a painting. Some were so bent she could probably sleep on them if she wanted to.
It really looked like a tropical paradise. She pulled out her camera, and started taking pictures. The first ones were of the way the sun glinted on the water, making it look like diamonds and sapphires. She sighed in contentment. She took her time exploring the lagoon, and knew she'd come back if she had time, later. It was too gorgeous not to. How could anyone resist this hidden place?
When the sun started to set, she started to hike out, and for good measure, she did her best to cover her tracks. She wanted to keep the lagoon as her secret getaway, on her getaway.

well... now that nikolai had confirmed that he was stuck on the island with the other guests, he tried to survey his surroundings to see if there was anything worthwhile to do. for a guy that had, more or less, spent his entire life in the city, this sort of situation was more than just disorienting. the cruise staff had suggested for everyone to go off on their own for a little bit to find something to do, but for someone like nikolai, it seemed as though he had been condemned to death.
beach? sun? sand? crabs? starfish???? just how was nikolai supposed to enjoy himself? ghost hunting was strenuous, and although he had traveled to many places, he seldom visited areas that weren't considered cities. he was worried and he was stressed, but it was safe to say that he was also flustered due to his current situation and the heat of the beach. he tried taking several deep breaths to calm himself down, and although his heart was still thumping in annoyance, he was able to analyze his surroundings with a clearer mind.
the first thing he should probably do would be to find shade of some sort. the summer sun was unforgiving, and nikolai felt as though he just might melt into a puddle of goo if he stayed out in the sun any longer. it... would be preferable if he was able to find a bar as well. one with air conditioning, of course. even if he didn't buy any drinks (which was highly unlikely, nikolai admitted to himself unwillingly), it was still shelter. bars were also excellent places to hear the ins and outs of a particular area. gossip traveled fast, especially in a place where people mingled and focused on the present.
with his mind made up, nikolai began to travel across the beach in search of his destination. even if he wasn't able to find a bar, that would be fine. so long as the place he went to didn't have any sort of ghosts, it would be acceptable for him. he went on the cruise in search of a vacation and a break from his job, and he didn't want to deal with the spirits that lingered around him more than he absolutely needed to.
he would do his very best to not perform a single exorcism during this vacation. that was his vow, and he also promised himself that he'd drink himself silly if such a thing really happened (or not. it didn't really matter anyways, as nikolai would have to do something to prepare himself for the headache that was his boss when he returned).

The first thing Oxford set out to do once he dragged himself away from the gorgeous views was head over to a bar he spotted over the heads of kalons discussing the disaster cruise in disgust. It was made of joined together pieces of driftwood and looked a little bit like a rush job - perhaps the islanders had set it up for the influx of cruisers? Colourful blackboards advertised a huge variety of tropical-inspired drinks and snacks with strange, often rhyming names like “palm tree whiskey”. Sat atop the woven barstools were a few other kalons either deciding what they wanted to order or already enjoying the extensive menu on offer. Oxford, on the other hand, was much more interested in the kalons themselves.
So far, Oxford hadn’t really talked to many people. Most of the time he had stayed in his cabin, but when he did venture out to explore and meet some people he was largely shot down and ignored. He figured that’s what he got for attending a cruise on his own and looking back, he probably should have surprised Desmond with a ticket of his own. Regardless, he was here now and this was probably his opportunity to finally try and make some friends on this cruise.
Oxford jogged over to the bar and took up the seat next to a kalon with yellow and red fur who briefly looked up at him, gave him a little wave and then resumed their drink. He took that as his chance to start speaking.
“Hi! My name’s Oxford Chandra! Back home I run a record shop with my friend, well, I suppose he’s my boyfriend now? Whatever, we haven’t really worked that out yet,” he began, blushing a little bit at the mention of Desmond but it wasn’t long before he was back on track again, “Anyway, we called it Sun&Moon records and I dropped out of college to help set it up. I was an architecture major but I completely lost interest, it just wasn’t for me.
We’ve been running it for about, hmmm let me see... three years now? Business is going pretty well, we’ve attracted quite a few regulars. Desmond always says it’s because we painted the door yellow - a friendly, happy colour - but I always think it’s because of the vibe we keep in there? Very warm and friendly, sort of crowded as well but in a good way! We often have music playing in the background and a lot of the time people start bopping along or even singing, it’s great! I always think it’s great when people discover new bands or find an old record that has sentimental value, that never fails to make me happy. Anyway, enough about me - what about you?” Oxford finally finished.
It was only after the awkward silence that followed did Oxford realise he’d been talking for ages and hadn’t given the other kalon a chance to chip in or say anything. In fact, the kalon was still staring at their drink. Oxford decided to give them a little tap on the shoulder to check if maybe he’d bored them so much they had fallen asleep. The other kalon turned towards him a bit wide eyed. When Oxford made no move to talk, they started signing at him and mouthing along. It was only then that he finally realised why they hadn’t responded, it was because they were deaf and he hadn’t properly caught their attention first. It didn’t take long for the other kalon to realise that he wasn’t well versed in American Sign Language. Instead, they pointed towards themselves and then signed a few letters. Oxford could tell they were letters from the small amount of sign language he had learned in school. S... A... K... I. Saki.
Embarrassed at himself, Oxford was ready to slide off his barstool and go away somewhere to hide, but he thought it would be rude to leave without saying anything.
“I’m Oxford,” he spoke really slowly so that Saki could perhaps try and lipread, “I’ve got to get going now, but it was nice meeting you!” he motioned over his shoulder and then extended his hand. Saki, slightly dubiously, took his hand and shook it firmly before releasing it allowing Oxford to finally crawl away and hide the blush that had spread over his face.
