Prompt:
Alex sat hidden behind a bush. The squirrel held his acorn, looking up to watch for prey every once in a while. The squirrel must have been blind, she thought. Bright rainbow fur and he still couldn't see her? She moved onto her haunches, and prepared to jump. The squirrel looked up from his acorn yet again, and Alex launched at him. Her jaws clamped around him, now she would take it back home. Alex padded through the bush, waiting for the sun to rise a little bit more. Lucas tended to sleep in a while, typically until the sun was 1/4 up. She began to walk faster, as she already ate. She soon came back to the 'den' that Lucas and her called home. Alex walked toward the edge, and leaned on her back legs. She ran past Lucas, trying to awake him. Lucas jolted upwards, she knew she had done her job. She ran in behind him.
"skrt skrt," she whispered, as her paws kicked up the leaves beneath them. Alex dropped the limp squirrel that had been dangling from her mouth at Lucas' paws. He looked up at her, shocked, then giggled.
"I brought us breakfast!" Alex smiled and laid down.
Your so fast, Alex!" Lucas purred,
"Soon you'll be the best squirrel hunter out there!" Lucas got back onto his moss bed, asking if she had eaten today. Alex responded with a soft,
"Yep, I found a blue bird." Lucas smiled and then bit into the squirrel. His eyes began to fog up,
"Alex, do you remember when mother told us stories of far away lands? Well, remember one of them, about the sloth that could read your dreams? Mom had said that she was not far from these forests, up in the mountains." Alex replied
"I don't like thinking about them. They left us, mom passing away and dad leaving. Mom didn't purposely leave us, but dad did. We can't risk ourselves. Maybe there is a sloth, but we can't go off on a wild goose chase. If either one of us got hurt, the other would be all alone." Her expression was sad, her face sunken. Lucas looked at her in desperation.
"Well I have something else to tell you as well. I had a dream, before you woke me up. I was at a beach, with beautiful, clear water. The water then turned to mud and I couldn't breathe. It was swallowing me" Lucas said suddenly, looked scared and lost.
"It was just a dream. You're okay, right? You shouldn't stress, that won't make you feel any better. We could travel outside of the forest, see if we can find the sloth mom told you about." She replied, sounding concerned. Lucas felt hurt, he took dreams seriously. Lucas aspired to practice medicine and omens, so it hurt him to hear her say this.
"When do you want to go?" Alex responded with a quiet,
"I don't really want to, but whenever you are ready. We will have to hunt prior to leaving." Lucas looked down on her response. He wanted support, but he understood the fact that it could be dangerous.
"We have already eaten, but I am aware of some herbs we can take on the road to help with hunger. I just want to know what my dream means, and I am okay with leaving when you are ready." Alex added,
"I know good hunting spots. Hunger suppressants are good enough for a small trip, but this may take a while. Do you know any medical herbs in case of injury or fever? Oh, wait! Do you still have your old medicinal bag? We could use that to carry herbs."Alex looked at him, hopeful that he would have it. Lucas' ears pricked, remembering the bag his mother gave him for carrying random trinkets he had found. Once he decided to study medicine, he used it to carry various herbs that are used for various uses.
"Let me go get, I'll try and be quick." Lucas turned, facing the back of the den. He pushed through the soil, then took a brown satchel out of the hole and held it in his mouth. He padded back over to Alex, his eyes hopeful.
"Here it is! I'm going to go shake it off and wash it, I'll be at the dugout river" Lucas walked out of the cave, and walked to the border of the territory. He squat down by the river and shook the bag under the water. He lifted his head back up and put the bag down beside him and took a drink of water. He then walked back and left the bag hanging off a twig in the sun.
"Now we can leave and get some herbs to fill the bag. I'll help catch you up on what to look for." Alex then asked for the easy to find herbs. She didn't really know what she was looking for. Lucas replied,
"Okay, you will find Borage, and it has blue or pink star shaped petals and hairy leaves. You will also find Burdock Root. They have wide green leaves and they grow in patches. Don't worry about their uses or how to use them, I know that and I can help if the time comes. I will find Chamomile, Chervil, Comfrey Root, Daisy Leaf, and a few others. I will also grab cobwebs when we cross them. We will meet at the den before sunset once all of your herbs are collected." Alex gave a confused glance, and nodded. She then ran off and began her search. Her back legs pushed the ground as she ran through the bush. She went over to the river Lucas used to clean his bag. Only a few feet away was a pack of Burdock. Alex dug at the ground, then tore the burdock out at the root and stored it in her mouth. She walked deeper into the forest, outside of their part of territory. She padded around for a while, heading farther and farther East of their territory. Alex soon came across a small collection of Borage. The petals were a nice blue color, shaped as stars. She looked at them in awe, then grabbed only a few of the flowers. She didn't want to ruin the bushel. She began running back, all of the herbs shoved into her tiny jaw. Once Alex made it home, she curled up on her bed and put the herbs down on a rock near the back end of the den. She then took a short nap until Lucas got back home.
She suddenly felt pressure on her stomach. Alex opened her eyes to see Lucas leaning over her. She let out a mew and slowly got to her feet.
"Are you ready to go? I put the herbs I got on the storage rock. Go get them and put them in your satchel."~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alex and Lucas looked up towards one another. The orphaned fox kits had fallen asleep.
"Guess they got bored of the story!" Alex said with a smile.
"Lucas, you go to sleep, I'll stay up for a bit and make sure all the kits are sleeping well" Alex looked at the sleeping kits and slowly closed her eyes.
