Writing:
"Cici, hurry up, we are going to miss the petting zoo if you keep trying to fix your makeup!"
"Yeah, yeah, I am coming! Don't get your earrings in a twist! I just had to fix my left eye, that's all!"
"We are going to the fair, not the Met Gala."
Lola paced in front of the bathroom door, huffing every once in a while in impatience. It had been years since the two girls had any time to spend together, and on the one day they could go and have fun, Cicada just had to take her sweet old time. The two friends had slowly grown apart as they got older, moving from the small, sleepy town they grew up in and moving on to bigger and better things. They had tried to plan around each other's schedules multiple times, but to no avail, one or the other always having something important to attend to on the other's day off. Finally, their schedules had matched up, and Lola wasted no time in having her dear friend fly up to meet her in time for the County Fair- the one place that held so many childhood memories for the both of them.
After a few more minutes, Cicada finally opened the door, earning a sigh of relief from her friend. The two headed out the door, chattering away about their daily lives and how work has been going. By the time the two had finished their conversation, they had made it to the fair, the paths winding around the booths and rides swarming with other fairgoers and carnies. The girls' eyes lit up, and with a tug to the wrist, Lola was dragging Cicada into the fray, sifting their way through the masses of parents and children alike, until they reached the petting zoo. The two immediately grabbed their quarters and purchases a handful of food for the animals, feeding the excitable goats and fawning over the small, fluffy rabbits the petting zoo workers held in their arms.
The girls made their way around the entire fair, walking through the barns, watching the 4H shows, and even buying some fried dough and fresh lemonade at the many stands littered about the area. Lola had also spent most of her money on the bottle game, groaning in defeat every time she just missed the neck of the bottle with the small, rubber rings the carnie had provided for "Only ten dollars!". After the 20th time of trying, and failing, Lola let out a loud, irritated growl, much to Cicada's chagrin, and she had to pull the angry heifer away from the booth before she just stole a goldfish rather than try again. They played other games; balloons and darts to win posters, and even the kiddie fishing game, winning some small plushies that they could "Trade in for a medium prize if they got four small ones" and so on. After spending whatever money they had left on them, the sky had already grown dark, and the clearness of the dark blue only made the two girls even more excited for the show to come. With sparkling eyes, the two look at each other and rush to the giant Ferris Wheel in the middle of the Fairgrounds.
Even as children, it was a tradition that the two had always headed to the Ferris Wheel as the sky darkened, hoping that by the time their gondola reached the top, the fireworks display at the end of the night would have just begun. It had been years since their last fair visit, but neither heifer was going to ruin the tradition, even after so many years of not being able to come. The two jumped into a gondola, adrenaline rushing through their veins and causing both to giggle uncontrollably as the wheel slowly moved. Slowly, they made it to the top, and the two looked over the edge at the beautiful array of lights from the rides and game booths, staring in awe. After a few minutes of waiting the fireworks began, lighting up the night in varieties of blues, yellow, and reds, some shaped like hearts and others that seemed to caress the night sky for minutes after they had ignited. Cicada looked over at Lola, the vibrant colors of the fireworks reflecting in her wide, glossy eyes. As the grand finale began Lola returned her gaze and smiled, and the two looked on at the scene before them, their hearts beating as loudly as the booming of the fireworks.
